When the magic suddenly drained all over Equestria, there were a lot of accidents as unicorns lost their magic abilities and spells began to fail. Some of these accidents were more devastating than others.

A colt loses his mother.

A soldier loses her best friend.

And a former gang leader living in Manehattan must now meet the son he's never met and face a dark spot from his past. Past he's still slowly coming to terms with while still haunted by what King Sombra did to him.

Junebug has been living a fairly content life in Ponyville, raising her only son Cooper. She's avoided telling anyone who the father is, even Cooper because of the painful memories associated with his father, Barricade.

But she's begun to hear stories that Barricade has changed, that he's a different pony now. Yet, Junebug just can't work up any nerve to confirm them. Too scared to see if there is any truth to them. Then the mail arrives and she learns that the stallion she fears, may know exactly where she and her son live.

Junebug has to decide whether she faces her fears once and for all, or just hope nothing will come from this.

King Sombra. The lost son of Queen Rabia. The former tyrant of the Crystal Empire. He thought he was the last of his kind. He's been defeated twice, first banished for a thousand years, then shattered by the magic of the Crystal Heart, but he was still not down. He was brought back to life due to previous careful planning and through that process has learned that there is hope for his race.

After laying low to recover his former strength, King Sombra has decided that he will rebuild the empire his mother and late sister ruled. But to do that, he needs ponies, certain ponies. Ponies that can trace their ancestry back to his race.

He needs Private Iceland and Barricade and preferably their family too.

The Cutie Mark Crusaders are heading to Manehattan to meet up with Babs Seed. This is their first visit to city since acquiring their cutie marks and they couldn't be more excited to meet their friend.

What they do not know however, is that trouble is brewing as an old employer of the local gang leader has arrived in the city. Some old past mistakes are coming back to haunt him and somehow the Crusaders get caught in the mess.

And all of this is watched by something sinister with its own agenda.

A silent grouchy pony is found by Princess Cadance and Shining Armor in the snow outside the Crystal Empire. He refuses to reveal his identity and doesn't say why he climbed the small mountain he was found on top of, but deep in his mind the pony has a very unwanted guest who has his own designs for both the Crystal Empire and the Royal Couple.

The prince and the princess know they must stop their enemy, but it might come at a terrible cost. The possessed pony's life.
