This story is a sequel to Friendship For Gearheads

Barron Secht, Archmagos Dominus, has done things which less flexible Imperial factions would call Heretical. He has adapted designs from Xeno tech-heresy, offered to negotiate with the unclean, and he's even gone so far as to cancel an Exterminatus--on the grounds that the very Machine Spirits themselves willed the ship's thrusters to quietly die.

He has spent the past two weeks attempting to understand a new kind of xeno--a race of quadrupedal sapients who have no knowledge of the Warp, or of War--but they have shown a capacity for learning and understanding beyond what the Imperium has ever reckoned with. The one called Twilight Sparkle recreated a lasgun design long thought lost. What other knowledge do they hold? Secht cannot afford to lose such valuable tech-lore.

Suffice to say, when he learned about the chaos god living on the edge of Ponyville, he was not thrilled.

Contains my best guesses at what Warhammer 40K canon is. Special thanks to Opponent, who wrote the comment that inspired this sequel, and who graciously loaned me his OC to play with. Also, shoutout to the WH40K wiki, and my buddy Tupo over in Estee's discord server, because dear Emperor this game's lore is dense.

Sunset Shimmer hates the magicless world of mutant apes she's been trapped in for the last four moons, but at least she's making some progress on improving her situation. Now if only the short-sighted fools surrounding her would stop getting in her way, she could show them. She'd show them all!

Note that this particular Sunset has yet to encounter the concept of the "mad scientist." Not until later today, anyway.

No more, and it would take quite a bit of effort to create any degree of 'less'.

What does a mayor do? On a good day, you get to nose over an award. It helps if you can make sure the weather schedule comes off on time. But more than anything else, it's about leadership. Taking responsibility for the safety and comfort of all those who live within your domain. That's how it's supposed to work. The mayor is the one who makes sure everything is under control.

This is Ponyville. Marigold is fully aware that on a typical day, approximately nothing will be under control. But when it comes to protecting those who live there, she still has to do whatever she can.

If there's anything left which she can do at all.

Being somepony's friend can require accepting the... quirkier parts of their personality: something Rarity is all too aware of, especially when it comes to the work involved in accepting hers. So discovering that Fluttershy possesses -- shall we say, a 'special interest' -- simply means that the designer needs to accompany her to the convention. Just to make sure the pegasus isn't going to get hurt.

But a mare of dignity and taste does not casually wander into a 'special interest' gathering and emerge unaffected. And as it happens, neither does Rarity.

With proper care, thought, and some attention given to what the recipient might actually want, just about anypony could purchase a well-planned Hearts & Hooves Day gift. Equestria is sometimes referred to as the land of second chances, all the more so after Luna's return. Songs are sung of Princess Celestia's benevolence and forgiveness, and legends are told that she can look directly into a creature's heart and see whether there is good in them. Others whisper that she is soft, and weak, and will let anypony off with a slap on the wrist.

Neither is quite true, but there was quite a firestorm of rumours when she decided to set Discord free. Many would like to know what precisely she was thinking to attempt to put a leash on a being who could plunge the land into chaos with a casual thought, but Celestia has kept the reasons close to her chest.

She's pretty sure nopony would believe her anyway. Sometimes the truth is stranger than rumours.
