Chapter 4: Falling

Chapter 4: Falling

Falling.

I was falling.

I looked about me to see an endless white void. The only thing that told me I was falling was the immense force I could feel from the air resistance working against me. I felt nothing but a continuous wind buffeting against my entirety. As I fell I made an attempt to open my wings, but I as far as I could tell there was no movement. No matter how much energy I poured into the fibers of my muscles, the appendages would just not comply. I then tried to contort my neck about in order to see if I could grab my wings using my snout and pull them open. Only once I had made the effort to turn my head past my shoulder did I realize that my wings were no longer in place. In fact, I no longer had my light blue fur, nor was I even equine.

I was human again.

I flexed my fingers on my left hand then my right. Yes, I was human. I brought my hands to my face, once more feeling the familiar features of humanity. In awe I looked down at my body to find that I was wearing the same jeans and t-shirt that I had been wearing the night of the incident with the dark cloud in the alleyway--everything down to my socks and contact lenses were present.

This must be a dream.

Suddenly, the expanse began to darken around me, fading from a pristine white to a deep blue tone. Slowly I found that the wind resistance was lessening and eventually stopped entirely. The void seemed to close in upon me and I began to notice millions of small pinpricks of light penetrating the dark abyss and inn only a few seconds the lights grew to the intensity of stars on a clear summer night.

By now I could easily mark my descent by the stars around me and just as easily tell which stars were closest by the rate at which I passed them. At this point I began to realize the true beauty of what surrounded me and I marveled at what wonders I had once taken for granted--there truly was nothing like it.

Just as soon as I began to appreciate the beauty of what I now beheld did I start to hear a faint pinging noise. It seemed to be coming from all around me, and I could see the stars begin to move past me a little faster. I decided to try and orient myself in the direction I appeared to be traveling just so I could get a better sense of direction, even if it didn't matter. I started to rotate one of my my arms outward to get a higher moment of inertia, then proceeded to swing it above my head. This produced a rotation letting my head and feet effectively pivot around my abdominal cavity, thus making me feel as if I were looking 'down'. Once I had reached the intended point I brought my arm back out to my side and slowly lowered it down to clasp with my other behind my back. I was now facing the direction the stars seemed to be coming from.

With my new orientation I noticed that the pinging had risen in volume and had ceased to sound from behind me. The origin of the sound seemed to be moving to a point in front of me and the further it moved toward the front the louder it became. Slowly the time between the pings began to lessen, and the pinging became a sort of sound like that of a violin. I could hear it moving back and forth between different frequencies, all approaching a higher pitch; it was now as if the higher the pitch got the faster I would move. The sound seemed to be much getting higher now, steeply ascending to a crescendo.

When the ominous sound reached its fever pitch I began to feel something within me. It was as if my entire body just relaxed at once then tensed just as suddenly. I could feel my skin begin to loosen up somehow, it was a truly indescribable sensation. Then slowly I began to see my own hair falling from my arms, floating off into the abyss. In only a minute it seemed as if half of the hair on my arms had fallen off, and I soon began to feel my fingernails changing. While hurtling through this abyss, fever pitch music in my ear, I began to feel the nails on my right hand with the opposing hand, to find that the nails were softening quite rapidly.

Now I was truly concerned. What's happening to me? As my nails continued to soften I could feel the hair on top of my head begin to fall out in the same fashion as the hair on my arms. I could now see that only a very miniscule amount of my arm-hair was still in place, and I noticed that the hair on my legs and other places had begun to dwindle as well.

It was a very odd feeling, having my hair just fall out. It almost tickled, but at the same time I felt as if there was a great sickness coming over me. While I contemplated this I could see the fibers of my shirt and jeans unraveling, as if the material was just coming apart on its own. My body hair was almost completely gone by this point, and I could feel that the hair on my head had gone from a once glorious thickness down to the sparsity of grass in a savanna. As time ticked by I could feel my hair growing thinner and thinner, until I was certain that someone viewing me from the top could easily see themselves reflected on my scalp.

By the time all of the hair on my body and head were gone I was able to feel the last of my clothes unraveling and falling into the abyss. The only hair left on me was my eyebrows, which too had begun to disappear. As I looked at my nails again I could see that they were detaching themselves from the ends of my fingers, which was surprisingly painless.

As if in response to the painlessness of my nails, my eyes started to burn like the ninth level of hell.

Damn contacts!

My contact lenses were beginning to dissolve in my eyes, causing a massive well of tears to fill them. The pain was unbearable, and I began to cry, not out of defeat, but out of irritation, as anyone who wears contacts could guess. The burning sensation seemed to subside a bit and there was a break in my tears just so I could see the last of my nails flying off into the void. I began to rub my eyes in an attempt to remove any particles that were still present, and just as the pain appeared to be leaving I felt a new pain that was beyond unimaginable.

All at once it was as if the bones in my feet began to move together, as did those in my hands. I could feel the curvature of my spine changing and my joints were beginning to turn in place. My skull began to grow and distend, my eye sockets widening immensely. As these skeletal changes were starting I could feel a great force pushing from under my skin. An ice blue fur began to emerge from my body, and I felt an even more rapid growth from my rear and on top of my head. The pain continued as my arms began to lengthen and my joints popped in to new positions. The bones in my feet were beginning to round and I could feel with great displeasure the skin pulling back from the bottom of what I recognized to be becoming a hoof.

I'm becoming a pony.

What had once been a harmonic bliss was now to me, a chaotic symphony of terror. The pitch of the once beautiful noise was now the essence of pain, the tempo now the destruction of my sanity. My feet and hands had by now become hooves, and I could tell (with great anguish) that I was sprouting a tail.

My eye sockets were now the size of baseballs, my eyes growing to accompany them. The hair continued to grow all over my body, sending waves of fire throughout me. I could feel my vertebrae multiplying, and lengthening, to a point at which my neck was at a terrible angle. Then at once I felt my main joints connecting my arms and legs to my body begin to shift. They were moving up and down the vertebrae as if they were tracks, and I felt a massive wave of pain wash over me as they seemed to claw their way along.

By now I seemed to have the general shape of a pony, with my once bipedal frame now being quadrupedal, and the fur on my body was nearing its end in growth. The pain was ebbing at least.

Wrong.

I began to feel yet another sting in my eyes as some unknown change was wrought upon them. Then there was a massive *crack* as my skull slipped down upon my neck. A new wave of pain poured from my groin area as that too began to change. Still feeling a pushing on my head and rear, I could only assume my mane and tail were still growing at an alarming rate. I tried to scream, but no noise would come forth.

Why can't I black out?

Normally this level of pain would cause anyone or anypony for that matter to black out and likely go in to shock, but I couldn't for some vile reason. I could do nothing but allow it to go on, accompanied by the shrill sound of the void.

Wait, what about the wings I had before?

As if on cue, there was a massive ache from behind my shoulders as I felt a new growth appear on my body. Bones were arising from my vertebrae and muscle seemed to migrate from my back into the new appendages. I felt the joints in my new wings begin to split, making room for more bone, and muscle growth. The muscle fibers and bones seemed to settle down in place, the wings began to flap a bit on their own as if to say 'You're about done.'

But I knew that it was a lie. I braced myself for what could only be described as razors pushing through the skin on my wings as the new feathers began to sprout. By this time the pain in my eyes had ceased and my mane and tail had stopped growing. I began to feel my teeth moving around in my jaw, some disappearing, others coming in to take their place. I felt my nose changing as well, and it was painless. Thankfully.

The only pain now was from the feathers pushing through the skin on my wings, and the final rearrangement and lengthening of my groin region.

This isn't even right.

Finally the pain was ending, the feathers done growing, and the last remnants of ache fading from my nether regions.

Is it over?

I felt nothing else happening to my body, and was thankful that my anguish was at an end. Another change occurred, this time it was welcome. The relentless noise from the abyss began to wind down and subside. There seemed to finally be a little peace in the void.

Haha, nope.

At once I began to hear a terrible tearing sound as I beheld a massive rent in the once beautiful void beginning to form. It was like the sound of a bed-sheet tearing, and it was loud enough to break my eardrums had it been possible in this realm. As I flew on toward the tear I could see that through it there was a blue sky and a lush forest. The tearing sound ceased and I could feel myself rocketing toward the great rent, feeling a mixture of wonder and fear. I took another look at my surroundings, hoping that I would never forget the beauty of it, and hoping I could forget what happened inside it.

As I grew nearer and nearer to the massive hole in space I could begin to see something of a reflection of myself in the opening. I soon found out what that reflection was as I passed through the rent, all traces of the harmonic noises vanishing, and a final sense of weight returning. I collided with what seemed to be a copy of myself, but I soon realized was my counterpart Zephyria. We soon became a tangle of hooves and appendages as we both emerged from separate voids that seemed to be facing each other, yet somehow emerging in the same direction.

We fell and fell from a large height down toward what could only be the Everfree Forest. At the same time we both seemed to realize that we could once again scream, thus we did. It was a pleasure to my ears just to hear my own voice again, even though we were plummeting to our doom, I being unable to fly due to my wings being tangled with Zephyria's legs. We fell, and fell, and fell, until we were no more than fifty feet from the forest floor. We seemed to slow immensely at this point, but still kept a considerable velocity.

As we struck the floor I felt an immense cushioning force under us, as if we were being protected by something, but the force didn't have enough effect to keep us from sustaining minor injuries. Feeling my head hit the ground I could finally feel the pleasure of slumber washing over me.

Just before I slipped from conciousness, I saw a pool of water a few feet from where Zephyria and I lay.

this dosn't make much sense last chaptor he bumps into Jake and blacks out for no piticuler reason and now he's turning into a pony AGEN and is fifty feet above the ground before being slowed by magic

Forgot to add one little detail...

Sorry I still have no idea

Is this a description of impressionist art?

I have to guess at this, but is he dreaming? Visions?
Is Celestia trolling him? Molesting him?:trollestia:
I'm totally lost. :twilightoops:
Good writing style, though! :twilightblush:

So this is a bit of a backstory as too when he was being changed before he woke up in Equestria. I can see you actually made this chapter much more better in grammar and vocabulary. Did you have help or do this yourself, because this chapter is actually pretty good.

1467295

This was my doing, the only help I had was a bit of pre-reading and some advice on removing a few unnecessary descriptions.

I'm glad to see how the writing style has changed and it has shown us how it would feel like to become a pony. I'll be honest though, I would probably cry from that pain. :fluttercry:

1467946
Yeah, it IS nice. Zephyrius really stepped up to the plate with this chapter; I feel it adds quite a bit of depth to Chris' characterization, as well as advances the plot. In fact, the only changes from the Gdocs version (as far as I know) were taking out the excessive use of italics (which would've maintained consistency, but we all thought they didn't make sense considering the chapter as a separate entity from the story in itself. tl;dr: Italics would've been used to maintain consistency, but they were taken out to not over-use them) and cleaning up the ever-present minuscule errors (occasional letter substitutions, etc. Would've made for a 99.99% accurate human mutant, and would likely have survived if we'd used DNA as a model for it, to give you a sense for the accuracy in conventions--yay for arcane and esoteric hardly-understandable references! :trollestia:)
Hope you understood that, and congratulations to Zephyrius!

To all of you feeling confused. READ IT. It's a pretty small logical leap from the implication of falling--randomly--into Equestria to the inference that this is Chris (Zephyrius)'s backstory--or, if you would prefer, the action sequence explicitly depicting his transferral to a different dimensional plane/alternate universe/travel through some sort of Einstein-Rösen-esque phenomena into a budding universe, for those interested in the Many Worlds theory and its consequences on the physics of Equestria, including but not limited to para-universal quantum gravity and the implications thereof of the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle (or the Feynman Sum over Histories, depending on the specifics of said scenario) as applied to a single quanta of light--in other words, a photon (one could, however, use any kind of force-carrying particle, or any particle in general--bosons, muons, leptons, assorted antiparticles, et al.). Sorry, did I get carried away there? (P.S. if you can find any scientific malapropisms, please elucidate them, and I shall make any necessary corrections to maintain my validity)
:eeyup::trollestia:
Seriously, though. It's implied--or at least one can infer from the chapter itself--that the chapter details Chris' thoughts while he was falling--initially--into Equestria. NOW everything makes sense, does it not?
:twilightangry2:  :trollestia: :flutterrage: :facehoof: :duck:
1469382
Yeah, the writing style definitely has changed--for the better! And yeah, got to agree with you there, the pain seems very realistic. Props to our dear Author for that!

~InfinityXanadu :twilightsmile::raritywink:

1469704
Ok so it was just what happened before.
You could have just said that, but thanks for the explanation.

1469704 yes i realize that, after my comment he clarified it, and im not sher what the Quantum Gravity theory has to do with this and some of the other ones are out on a limb

1469704
I, for the most part, understood that the phenomena detailed in the second chapter referred to his inter-dimensional transfer from one proverbial plane of existence to another. What's not totally clear is that you never really clarified whether he was experiencing said phenomena at the time, or simply DREAMING of having experienced it in the past. From your above comment, I can surmise that he was dreaming, though why you would go of into multi-verse theory to explain that he was dreaming is beyond me. :twilightoops:

1469770
Yeah. Figured you'd understood, seeing as you didn't comment any further, but just wanted to make 100% sure. Also, Quantum Mechanics and its implications when combined with the Many Worlds Theory (Not Quantum Gravity. There's a difference) was just the natural extrapolation induced by my heavily physics-focused brain at the current moment. (tl;dr: I was doing some pleasure reading on the subject, and so that's how I naturally continued the line of logic). I do hope that I didn't inadvertently commit some sort of malapropism to distort my meaning; I typed it kinda fast. What d'you think?
1469748
Well, Zephyrius COULD have, but I for one (and this is just imo) prefer to leave things at implications--things (for me) are much more interesting when I actually have to THINK. But you're right. He could've. The question of whether or not it adds or detracts from his story will have to be answered later; I have to go brush up on my QM/MWT reading. I actually don't know whether he was dreaming (I'm not the author, it would appear, I just REALLY like the way he's going with this story, so I thought I'd clarify to the best of my ability), but it would probably make more sense that he's dreaming (unless there's some sort of trans-dimensional trauma manifesting itself as amnesia going on). And, the Many Worlds theory and Quantum Mechanics' implications concerning said Many Worlds Theory can be thought of as some sort of explanatory mechanism (provided the math works out--it'd take a LONG time to work it all out) for why said dimensional travel occurs (if the meteor itself and "MAGIC" or "SCIENCE" related image macros aren't enough for you). The trauma/memory-loss bit would have to be surmised by the fact that either:

a) The author is merely writing what makes sense
-or-
b) Sub-consciously, the protagonist initiated some sort of primal damage-control mechanism to reduce the mental effects of being forcibly lifted from one environment, tranferred, and forcibly placed in another.

Perhaps an experiment could discern the actual occurrence?

Or, I could've just written it because that's what I had been reading about previously to checking FIMFiction... who knows? [insert random image macro here]

~InfinityXanadu :twilightsmile::raritywink::trollestia:

1470078 yes you did a relativity good job. but you did bring up quantum gravity of which well im not piticularly knoligabal of dos not seem relivent to him getting from our world to equestria this is the exception to the theorys you presented the rest however unlikely are a possible method for him to get to equestria, if that's what you meant :twilightsheepish:

PS. go easy on advanced/theoretical physics i can understand you but i don't know how many other viewers will :derpytongue2:

I am seeing that they will be swapping worlds as a day-to-day or go back for shorter times 'till they are in Equestria full-time.

Why can't I black out?

Normally this level of pain would cause anyone or anypony for that matter to black out and likely go in to shock, but I couldn't for some vile reason. I could do nothing but allow it to go on, accompanied by the shrill sound of the void.

I'm taking psycology, and one of the things that my teacher says. Is that you NEVER blackout due to pain.

1470247
OBVIOUSLY you understand what I'm talking about, since you erroneously implied that I was discussing the so-called "Unified Theory of Quantum Gravity/Quantum Relativity," when I was in fact talking about the Many Worlds Theory (one of the possible explanations for QM's machinations), and its implications on the story itself (wonder what would happen if the Quantum Suicide thought experiment were to be implemented in this story... interesting...).

But sarcastic mockery aside, you may have a point in that we shouldn't fill up the comments discussing esoteric science principles and how they relate to a certain piece of literature... we COULD, however, move this discussion elsewhere/keep it on a smaller scale, because the conjectures and postulates that we could form would be very conducive towards further interesting discourse.

What say you?

1470821
Either of the two seem to work admirably; they both sort-of fit in with a non-linear description of time (that could be implied by the MWT). I'll also be eagerly awaiting to discern which path the author decides to pursue (and consequently which universe we are forcibly thrown into...).

1471299
>.>
<.<
What? Where?

1472810
Actually, your point stands somewhat-valid. People don't black out from pain per se, as pain is merely a human construct. It can be argued that pain, in and of itself, is merely the brain's interpretation of tiny electrical pulses, and such cannot cause a person to pass out (being intangible, a construct of our psyche).

However, the brain's response to trauma, which is highly correlated with pain (the electrical signals accompanying the trauma as the impetus for the brain's "pain" reaction), can be to temporarily disable memory, and even brain activity (however, to "black out," one must still be conscious, just have lost all characteristics of being conscious"). This may or may not be a result of brain damage caused directly or indirectly by the trauma, but could potentially be a conscious activity. The above point, however, relies on the assumption that the main character has an extremely high level of self-control (of which he apparently does not).

Thus, the implication is that his brain sustained some sort of damage during his cross-universe transfer, causing the brain to temporarily suspend vision.

As for the trauma, one may infer that there were some high accelerations sustained during his fall toward Equestria (colloquially, "g-forces"). "G-forces" over a threshold of about 17g (NOT the SI unit) sustained "eyes-in" or in a supine position can be sustained without long-term harm, however if the subject is lying prone, slightly less tolerance is possible.

Thus, we can infer that Chris was likely not sustaining large amounts of g's, merely that he thought the pain was a result of some trauma that would impair his brain function.

In conclusion, your point about pain not being the impetus stands up to my--admittedly non-professional--scrutiny, but the underlying assumptions behind your interpretation of pain (that it is some sort of tangible item, or that it encompasses the realm of activity to a high degree) seem to be false.

One could, however, make the point that Chris was highly unlikely to know all of this, and thus simply committed a logical fallacy, but (and don't you agree?) I find it far more interesting to debate the consequences of the actual physical happenstance.

Hope that correlates with what your teacher said; I wouldn't want to invalidate your entire psychologic career.

HAAA I get it... no actually I don't. Please elucidate?

Also, found two minor errors for 1467821 to correct.

I was falling.

Should be in italics, and the next one:

I was human again.

Should also be in italics.

HAAA I get it. BTW I have to agree; Jayfeather is best cat. Though, Bluestar was kinda awesome too (can't forget Whitestorm, or Stormfur, either. Never mind. LIKE ALL THE CATS!). Flametail, also, deserves special mention.

1473887 Poor Flametail, such a sad way to die :fluttercry:.

1473887 Also I believe I did the meme for the wrong comment :P

1473895
Yeah, that's why I was confuzzled...

1473887

The italics were thoughts, all of the thoughts were in present tense, I think.

1474270
True, it just preserves consistency (and it's perfectly reasonable for Chris to be thinking "I was falling").
Your point is valid, and it's not NECESSARY to change. However, you COULD if you wanted to keep the format of italics-one-line-regular-paragraph-repeat.
Just a possible suggestion, no need to act on it.
~InfinityXanadu

1473793
Well fuck, that's quite the rescerch you did there. I would've added that one is most likely to faint from the exhaustion after what he went through.

I also learned in phsycology, that if one were to have a sezure, they will be very exhausted afterwards. Since a sezure is essentally an electral overload to ones brain, where everything is moving at once in a chaotic fashion. Which brings me to the point about not fainting while experencing pain. In Chris' case, his brain was working overtime, like having a sezure. Which would cause severe exhaustion, thus he would passout.

I am also aware about fainting while under high levels of G-forces. But that's mostly due to blood not being able to reach the brain, thus a blackout would occure.

I also know about the head trauma. One would faint from the trauma itself, not the pain. Which is why in MMA matches. If someone were to punch the other enough times, that person (getting punched) would eventually passout. They would also passout if the person punching them were to hit then in the right spot. Also, punches cause a dull pain, not a sharp pain that I assume Chris was under.

1474708
Haha :twilightsheepish:. Research.... I do try to make sure my responses are scientifically accurate...

Exhaustion. Hmm. While it is definitely true that exhaustion can be an effect of seizures, one must make sure that one's definition of a seizure and the assorted logical next steps associated with said definition are accurate.
Seizure can be defined as "The physical findings or changes in behavior that occur after an episode of abnormal electrical activity in the brain. (Source: NIH)

While you ARE correct in stating that a seizure can be associated with an electrical overload [or, as you later state: "everything is moving at once in a chaotic fashion" or "brain was working overtime, like having a sezure" (sp)], it is important to note that the term "seizure" in and of itself merely refers to the physical manifestation of said aberration in brain activity.

Following along this thought train, seizures [I am making the assumption that you're in fact either referring to so-called "grand mal" or "generalized tonic-clonic" seizures (rather than the far-lesser-magnitude "petit mal" seizures), or even to complex "partial" seizures] generally manifest themselves in the following ways:

Muscle Rigidity (Involuntary cramps caused by the brain's electrical signals instructing muscles to tense randomly)
then, violent Muscle Contractions (same page)
then, LOC (Loss of Consciousness)

Other symptoms may include:
Biting the cheek or tongue
Clenched teeth or jaw
Loss of urine or stool control (incontinence)
Stopped breathing or difficulty breathing
Blue skin color

After the seizure, the person may have:
Normal breathing
Sleepiness that lasts for 1 hour or longer
Loss of memory (amnesia) regarding events surrounding the seizure episode
Headache
Drowsiness
Confusion
Weakness of one side of the body for a few minutes to a few hours following seizure (called Todd's paralysis)

(Sourced verbatim from the NIH's Medline Plus medical information website.)

While several of these symptoms mirror exhaustion, it is HIGHLY unlikely that seizures have ANYTHING to do with this. Chris, in the chapter, never experienced the telltale signs (above) of a generalized tonic-clonic seizure, nor a mere partial seizure. Thus, we can safely infer that seizures have nothing to do with this story insofar as Chapter 4 is concerned. Ergo, I must reject your point on the aforementioned basis.

Now to move on to your other points.
Blood being unable to reach the brain actually CAN cause pain, as the only human to reach ~46 g's whilst strapped to a rocket sled can undoubtedly attest to, if he were still alive today. Check my previous comment's citations for the Wikipedia article's references regarding this.

Secondly, that could adequately cover BOTH Chris' pain, and the subsequent fact that he didn't black out, as even in a prone position, one can still sustain significant accelerations.

In reference to head trauma:
You are basically just restating my point in the first two sentences. However, you commit a logical fallacy in the following sentences, by assuming comparatively weak, moderately localized force is the modus of energy transmission. Trauma is not necessarily blunt-force; rather it can be delivered either in an extremely localized, specific manner, or merely blunt-forced. For a real-world-esque thought experiment, consider a railgun. If one were to shoot another with one, the victim would experience so-called "sharp" pain. Immense, localized pain. Of course, the forces involved would likely kill the victim before said pain can be fully appreciated, but I have made my point.

Pain is one of the least-understood aspects of the human psyche (and that's saying something), so it is inherently difficult to quantify it in any manner, hence your qualification as "sharp" or "dull." However, the presence of various hormonally/psychologically extraneous factors may invalidate your "MMA" example.

In summation:
Your first point was mediocre. Your second was slightly better. Your third was pretty much wrong. Don't take this the wrong way; even psychology (that's how it's spelled, btw) students find it hard to quantize seemingly-unquantifiable concepts (i.e. pain), but your reasoning appears to be shallow at best, and at worst, an utter fallacy (It appears a non sequitur, possibly similar to affirmation of a disjunct, affirmation of a consequent, or etc. I apologize for the non-specificity here, I didn't have time to thoroughly research the exact logical fallacy you may have committed).

~InfinityXanadu :twilightsmile::raritywink:
Best way to diss someone: LOGIC! (Not implying that I DID diss you; you'll have to determine that for yourself).

1473793 actually i haven't had much intresst in Quantum Gravity so haven't don much research its that in your first post>>1469704 you do bring up Quantum Gravity which unlike the others has no logical way to propel oneself into equestria... ...im not sher but could quantum gravity create a sub-atomic black hole that would act like a portle without a event horisen?

and whir shall we continue at?

1477292
Np. We all make mistakes. It's probably mankind's most endearing aspect. You do make a good point in your second argument; it was intriguing and took me a reasonable time to research, for which I commend you.
1476975
Oh. I see what you meant. I did, in fact, use the words "quantum gravity." I apologize for my misunderstanding. However, it was merely an extension (and a theoretical one at that) of my previous point, not having any major bearing on my entire argument.

About "quantum gravity" : I did some deeper searching and found that my earlier extension on quantum gravity MAY have some inherent flaws in it; the specifics are listed here.

This. is probably a better explanation of what could potentially happen than I could ever give, although it is a bit dense at times. Since quantum gravity (the theory(ies) that aim to reconcile relativity and quantum mechanics) inherently must be stable in order to function successfully (seems a bit like circular reasoning when I say it this way, but just read the article), they couldn't cause subatomic black holes--all of which would probably also have an event horizon, being black holes--but black holes of this size may be--and are--present in the universe, if only for short periods of time. Huge applications of energy, say, in a proton collision at the LHC, can theoretically cause microscopic black holes to manifest, but they always disappear shortly.

PopSci has a good article in one of their recent issues about this; it states that if one were to theoretically survive the event horizon (of not a small black hole but a LARGE one), one could be transported to a connected universe. The reason for this is in one of those "Sci-Fi Science"-esque shows, so it shouldn't be too hard to find. I have to go now, so I won't be able to research it atm.

And, I believe that it's fine for us to discuss this here; if Zephyrius wants us to go, he'll tell us.
Hope that cleared things up!
