Rune Soldier Dan

Love is a verb, not a noun.

T

Moondancer enjoys working Hearth's Warming Eve: Nopony else ever comes in, leaving her with the entire Canterlot Archives all to herself. What could be better?

Her happy solitude is ruined when a pony arrives with a strange puzzle in hoof. As they search for the answer, Moondancer slowly learns that the interruption is not so bad, after all. At least, when done by a fellow nerd.

Oh, I love "Crystalatin." I may have to make use of that.

There were better games, anyway. Even if the last edition of Marehammer made ranged combat overpowered…

I have to love them connecting over tabletop games.

Oh no. It's not just Crystalatin, it's Pig Crystalatin. :rainbowlaugh:

“The boarfolk.”

Wow. Wow. Let me laugh even harder.

This was delightful. Everything I hoped for. Thank you for a lovely gift, and Merry Jinglemas.

She socked him with a pillow.

That's fair.

hair and beard

Probably should be mane and beard, given the context.

they agreed Daring Do was a poor archaeologist

At least as "AK Yearling" portrays her in foal's literature. It's not clear whether either of them are aware of what I'm implying via scare quotes, but it'd be hilarious if they only found after talking to Rainbow Dash about this.

"The project was soon learned be most limited by horsepower"

Moondancer really is the perfect pony for the job, and the job's perfect for her.
Nice to see her and Sunburst together; bookish nerd unicorns like them seem like a perfect match for friendship!

This was funny, nerdy and quite heart-warming. Well done!

But they need a third who's practical-minded enough to remind them to eat. Y'know, to avert tragedy.

I was hoping you'd like a long pun. I'm glad you enjoyed the story.

I'm actually surprised there's not more stories of this pairing; I guess because it's heavily implied he's with Starlight and Starlight will incinerate anypony who tries to lay claim to him (excepting, perhaps, Trixie).

But this is by far the best fic I've seen yet of this pairing! As always, kudos on another excellent work!

A wonderful story about a duo that I confess I had never thought of, and which yet makes so much sense in retrospect once one gets down to it.

I love both Moondancer and Sunburst in separate, and the way you combine them both in their love for research and their growing bond over general common ground is both chuckle-inducing and fuel for fuzzy feelings. And as someone who just loves worldbuilding, it was a treat to read the lore you came up with for the Crystal Empire, as well as your further details of Sombra's rule. Though I admit I'm biased there, as I do love Sombra as well, both in terms of 'genuinely love as a tragic and pitiable figure' for his IDW comics selves and in terms of 'love to hate' for his grandstanding self that Discord brought back for the animated show.

On a bit of a side note, it's a curious detail that they remark about it being difficult to get the amount of bells on Star Swirl's hat right, considering that now artists can just visit the real one and count them, but it does make sense, given that presumably not everypony can get immediate access to the real Star Swirl and his hat.

Back on the 'main aspect', though, I think the most subtly powerful part of this story is how Moondancer and Sunburst, despite not really celebrating the holiday, did celebrate the holiday's basic spirit of union and friendship and love (and while I will admit I could see them both as a romantic ship, I do mean all types of love, including platonic one, when referring to the spirit of the holiday). As I conveyed in my review to Reconnection, it may be an oft-repeated message, but it's one that's always good to repeat, especially given how many still forget it (and not just in reality, but also in-universe, given how easily the Windigos came back).

All in all, as I said earlier, a wonderful story. I loved it! :)

That there's an old season-2 reference! Given that both Twilight and Luna make a deal of it it seems like something the nerds would love fact-checking.

Well... I realize now I didn't explain myself properly, but I did get the reference. ;) What I meant is that the bells seem the sort of thing that would be much easier for nerds to check now that the real Star Swirl is alive and around, but at the same time, I do get that not all of them would have as privileged access to Star Swirl as Twilight and her friends do.

Ah, I see! I suppose I fancied it more of an old-movie poster, and nerds just idolizing the one that got it right.🤓

11499720
Well, if I may say so, I do feel that that idea makes perfect sense. 🙂 And the artist who drew that poster after doing proper research is bound to have become held in rather good standing after the real Star Swirl returned and both him and the nerds saw the accuracy (and depending exactly on how old the film was and how old the artist was when they drew it, may even have been alive to be recognized 😉 ).

Thank you! This was a cute little story!
