All Recruiters lie. Run Rarity Run!
So that's her title? Bit of a promotion from "love", innit?
He-llo Vietnam!
Seriously Cadence, this is a very bad idea.
Well that's a bit of a departure from canon.
And, that's a lot more than a bit of a departure. Huh.
10199687
I like to imagine Tribune White's full name is White Lie.
10199693
Twilight refers to her by that title in chapter 7 if I recall correctly. Sometime back, anyway.
Yeah, it is a large departure from canon. I wanted to depart from it, and portray a more militarised Equestria.
Glad you liked the new chapter!
I was not expecting more content so soon! And the main six and others are getting some action now? With some alternative starts?! This is going to be good!
10199721
Like I said, I have alot of free time now - and the will to write in full. My power levels have never been higher.
10199726
Cool. I love the story and can't wait for more. See you next chapter!
Hummm Rarity haveing done a stint in the Military could explain how she managed to open her boutique(with the bonus) and where she learned martial arts(in basic). The girls always seemed to be early to mid twenties and ponies appear to become considered "adults" pretty early too. Things don't need to go that far from canon for Rarity to have taken such a detour in life.
Ohh! Well this took some interesting twists.
Thanks for the fun read.
So we have a mentally scarred powerhouse in Twilight and what is likely to be a Rarity with a military mentality. Can't wait to see what twists you have in store for the other four. Some part of me wonders if you plan to turn the Mane 6 into a team of badasses.
10199767
Don't be fooled, this story has Twilight with PTSD from being raped. You really think they're just gonna casually put up all that build up with Cadence making a military decision she wasn't qualified for, just to drop the other bit with Rarity suddenly joining the military (while specifically having the recruiter play up how war unicorns just sit around and do nothing) and Rarity or Big Mac are gonna be just fine?
Gfycat is annoying to make clips from
Oooookay. To imagine a Rarity blasting stuff has some merits, I can't argue that the idea isn't enticing. *nods and hands out popcorn for others to read*
Good chapter and this is not going to turn out good at all
Dude. Just binged everything in this story so far, and I'm really loving it. It's fascinating. And this new setup for the mane6 outside of Twilight!!! Really interesting stuff with the different-from-usually-implied age gaps. I know that even a relatively small age gap can be a big deal in a dynamic. I'm very much fascinated by everything, and I love how the characterization is working so far, delving deeply into every single important character, and I'm also fascinated by the actual physical/magical mechanics of the world you're laying out. I'm eagerly awaiting the next parts.
10199699
Cadance took Twilight's job?
Hands? What are these 'hands' you speak of?
Absolutely loving this story so far, can't say much more than the comments already posted. Looking forward to much more of it!
Lol, not good at writing a story discription? Bro, just the scene of cellys room made me feel like I was there.
Everytime I think I have this story understood, you throw another curve.
Well ok, i didnt have to wait long for this update. Thank you.
But now you had to go and somehow make things far more interesting than they already were. Can't want to see what happens next.
Yes that definitely reeks of Vietnam. Northern popular majority, a southern political dynasty that a world superpower wants to support because reasons, supposed to be a “short victorious war” due to supposed superiority over the rebels. Even the geography sounds right.
I’m a Veterans attorney, and my wife was in the Air Force. I’ve learned so much about about WWII, Korea, Vietnam, PGW, GWOT, and even Peacetime involving the many ways our troops can be hurt. MST is rampant. Occupational safety as we know it is nonexistent. Don’t get me started on toxic exposures. Health care for anything short of something critical consists of a couple of Motrin or walking it off. And that’s just talking about the support troops. Combat arms has to deal with PTSD and similar issues.
Im proud as hell of anybody that joins the military. It can be an amazing opportunity that sets you up later in life for success. It can also be a Very Bad Day at times. I don’t think Mac or Rarity are going to have an easy time of it if this turns out like our own Vietnam.
But hey, if the Equestrian Ministry of Veterans Affairs denies their compensation claims after they get out, they could always hire me to appeal for them. :)
Not a bad idea. For me, it was a bit abrupt to change from just Celestia, Cadance, and Twilight to outside of the castle, but not too bad. I will say this definitely shattered all thoughts I had of you aiming for a "what happened before Season 1, Ep1" kinda of backstory (where I thought you were taking this - not complaining, just my interpretation).
But I'm here for the duration as I have no idea where the heck this is all going, but it's gonna be a bumpy ride that's for sure. So, welcome to the 1960's?
...and unfortunately, I'm pretty sure Shining Armor's gonna end up going to 'nam just like Rarity and Mac. (But I've been wrong before).
...ooh! Tell me we get hippies! Tell me Fluttershy's a hippy!
10199988
In all fairness, Twilight is still a filly right now. She won't ascend for years yet. Twi will probably get the job eventually, though.
All I can say is great job on this latest chapter. The exchanges, characterizations and future chapter set-up are pretty well done in all the right places. I LOVED Twilight's chat with Celestia (particularly with Twi noting so many of Celly's keepsakes (and I'm pretty sure that first figure was NOT a mistake; it was just made BEFORE Celestia ascended). And, yeah, I can see Cadance being frustrated with Celestia's work load (and being inexperienced enough with said work load to get roped into agreeing to what other reviewers have already guessed to be this universe's answer to the Vietnam War), though I DID like the bit of foreshadowing with Trixie being Raven's cousin. The scene with Rarity, her parents and Mac was pretty good too. I could see why Mac would think he could help his family more with that military bonus. And Rarity is actually four years older than Applejack in this universe (Rarity: HEY! DO NOT talk about a lady's age, good sir! Me: Right. Sorry about that.) And, yeah, as other reviewers have said, the military stint could be a good way to explain how she got the money to open the boutique AND learned martial arts. And how much do you want to wager that they would probably have a couple of Wonderbolts heading over to Cloudsdale to do some recruiting among the Pegasus community (which would get Rainbow Dash signing up in a heartbeat)? I would wager that Fluttershy would probably be a protestor to the war (being the most likely to subscribe to the "Make Love, Not War" mindset and adopt the "Flower Power" [as well as "Animal Power"] slogan). Pinkie (as well as Trixie and Cheese Sandwich) would probably be part of the U.S.O. crew (being into entertainment rather than combat)
But, at any rate, I'll certainly be looking forward to more of this.
10200204
Yeah. Good point about Shiny.
And, yeah, I could definitely see Fluttershy as a "Flower Power" (as well as "Animal Power") type.
As for Pinkie, considering most of her talents lie in entertainment rather than combat, she would most likely be a U.S.O. Girl.
10199849
Not everything needs to be completely different. Some of the best MLP fics are about explain how Equestria manages to be the way it appears in the show, why the characters act as they do by exploring what could been happening or what might of happened that the show wouldn't or couldn't cover.
10200111
Makes the chapter title especially appropriate.
10199767
Well, I already know exactly how old all of the girls are in relation to Twilight. I hope all of you are going to find what they're doing interesting as I sprinkle them in.
10199811
You're welcome!
10199830
By the time I'm done with the Mane Six, it's going to be the Bane Six.
10199849
Well... People can dream, right?
10199875
That was one of the benefits I had thought of to all of this. It is a nice thought.
10199941
If writing were labour, I'd be a miner. I'm glad you like the characters and what I'm building up here. A lot of thought goes into it, and I devour praise!
Edit: Whoops, posted this before I was done...
10199942
She is saying that the painting certainly does not depict the real first sunrise, and that there was no one else but them to see the second one, either.
10199988
Can't really jack a job someone doesn't have yet.
10200053
Whoops!
10200068
I suppose that's true. Really glad you liked the room scene!
10200111
You're doing good work, I'll be sure to tell Rarity she has you in her corner. Glad you liked the chapter, and I hope you don't find my portrayal of things too whack.
10200204
I did say I was curious as to where you thought this was going. I knew pretty early that I was going to branch out to at least glance at the other Mane Six. Time to rock it from the Delta to the DMZ, my friend.
10200252
Glad you liked all of the keepsakes in Celestia's room! I'll admit I'm a bit surprised no one has brought up a few things I've been hinting toward, but who knows? Maybe you guys have figured it out and not said anything.
Glad you enjoyed the scene with Big Mac, it was a joy to write. You'll certainly be seeing a bit of Cloudsdale eventually.
10200259
It's literally just Pinkie dressed up in an Equestrial Flag, short skirt, and dancing on stage - add some singing about patriotism, I suppose. Then again, she is a party animal.
10200288
I thought it might be a bit on the nose, but boops are welcome here.
Oof, things are taking a Turn. Hoping it ain't gonna be too bad, but somehow I doubt it, especially since people are drawing Vietnam parallels, and while I don't know my history, I do know that that wound up turning into shit.
Also, something that kind of annoys me about this site is that turning off the visibility of Mature-rated stories also affects one's favorites and tracks, which means I can't see when stuff updates, sometimes. I remember I used to have a ton of "ghost" pings in an otherwise empty page, back when I was on top of my story updates. I wonder if there's a reason why it has to be this way; if it'd be too difficult to find a way around it. In any case, if I want to see updates for this story, I'm gonna have to remember to toggle that switch, and to toggle it off once I'm done.
10200460
Yeah, sorry about the potential issues for the mature rating. With the content, I had previously I was pretty alright with it being T, but some of my plans involve M rated content. In addition, it means I can put in basically anything I want now, which is nice. I don't like shying away from violence, death, or sexuality to comply with the rating.
10200347
10200487
Oh, nice. I like when they get a level in badass.
So let's see, at least some if not all are going to have PTSD, combat military training, and be overpowered, or at least better trained.
Actually, that's also one false court martial away from being the A-team too come to think of it
10200614
Twilight lit the cigar gripped in her levitation with a small spark of flame. As she stepped out of the shadows, her eyes gleamed in the light. She took a single puff, blowing out a cloud of hickory-scented smoke before declaring, "I love it when a checklist comes together."
The announcement of the closing of the day court uses Cadance's nickname rather than her full name as I would expect for a formal announcement.
Rarity says her power level 1245, but the recruiter refers to it as 1250 for the rest of the conversation.
I've never really been fond of the assumption that ponies have surnames. Ponies don't seem to have them as we understand it, even though it sometimes seems that way when they use addresses like Mr. Cake and Mrs. Cake. But Rarity, Fluttershy, and Applejack show that it's relatively common to only have one word as your name. And Rarity at least has certainly been addressed as Ms. Rarity on more than one occasion.
The confusion over this is probably connected to the fact that some families practice a particular naming scheme and others don't.
Two perfect examples are the Pie family and the Apple family. The Pie family obviously practices a pretty strict naming scheme, the last word in their name is always Pie. On the other hand, the Apple family practice theme naming, where they don't have to specifically have apple in their names, but it should be something relating to apples. Presumably when you marry into one of these families, it's expected that you'll change your name to match.
Interestingly, another example of a family naming scheme which actually breaks the scheme is the Rich family. Everyone in the Rich family has rich as the last word in their name, and when Diamond Tiara's mother married into the family she changed her name from Spoiled Milk to Spoiled Rich. But Diamond Tiara herself breaks the scheme, since she's not Diamond Tiara Rich.
Other families don't practice any kind of naming scheme and simply keep their names the way they are. Cadance and Shining Armor, Rainbow's parents Bow Hothoof and Windy Whistles, and Twilight's parents Twilight Velvet and Night Light are all examples of this.
10200661
I actually plan to get a bit into explaining naming schemes in the story, as it bothers me as well. It's going to involve regional cultures and traditions. Earth ponies are going to have more common surnames that were once associated with local clans and have evolved over the years. The other tribes will have different traditions, and I may break or down by region. It will depend on how in depth I need to go for it, or how much I want to.
As for Cadance, I never liked Mi Amore Cadenza. In my head, her name is just a single word like Celestia and Luna.
10200628
"Ya'll ain't gettin' me onto no airship! I ain't gonna fly with that crazy fool Pinkie."
10199693
"Princess of Love" is purely a fan invention and deviations from it are entirely legitimate. In FiM (not here, obviously) Cadance is the queen of the Crystal Empire and, per The Movie, the Equestrian Princess of Family.
10199699
This is more than militarized. What you've portrayed here is an all-conquering imperium.
Also, to all, the Vietnam analogy is inapt. The DRV was not separatist (never mind ethnically separatist), but aspired to rule the whole country. A more apt analogy here would be Tamil nationalism in northern Sri Lanka. The armed Tamil nationalists even called themselves the Tigers.
10200713
Hey, someone got it. Anyway, the Vietnam comparison is still fair. I even named the chapter No Fortunate Daughter. Glad you liked the chapter!
That might be the most accurate recruiter I've read.
10200771
I did my best to channel that recruiter energy. Glad it came out accurate.
10200733
The Vietnam comparison is fair from the perspective of the imperial power (or it might not be - Equestria, with no power to counterbalance it, might be more willing to use its nuclear weapons than the USA was in Vietnam). Why that perspective ought to be privileged over the one which proceeds from the political and other conditions of the country is anyone's guess.
Informal Celestia? Nice.
Ambitious military leaders? Not so nice.
War Mage Rarity? Be VERY afraid.
10199875
Ehhhh not her style. Rarity's still rarity, and her mark hasn't changed. If anything, I end up picturing Walter C. Dorneze. Garrot Wire, razor wire, and the art of extermination.
Pony Vietnam will leave a lot of baggage indeed...
10201086
Rarity uses laser blasts several times in the show: in a dream in Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep, and in "reality" in The Beginning of the End and The Ending of the End.
Really? They're going to fight intelligent cats, specifically tigers, in mountainous jungle. They are not the pushover Abyssinians, these are large predators. Magic (artillery), air support, large field armies, these work best on open terrain. This has all the earmarks of a total disaster in the making. This is going to be pony Vietnam.
I hope Rarity and Big Mac survive. And well done Hondo Flanks and Cookie Crumbles. In your desire to save bits, you've forced your daughter into putting her life at risk. I hope all that money you saved on not paying for fashion school makes up for if all that comes back is a folded Equestrian flag.
"What do you mean you joined the Legion!" Her father yelled at her across the table while her mother looked on worriedly at the implications such a career meant.
Rarity held her held head high, face etched in the blank expression caused by years of being a disappointment to her parents. She had thought about what she was going to say once she got home, what they would say, and so on.
It had taken her two laps around the park to figure it out and by Celestia it was disrespectful, but felt so right.
Shifting her head to look at her mother before returning to match her own father's scowl, Rarity lifted her right foreleg and promptly bang it twice to drive home the words she was about to say.
"It's always about the bits, well, I took care of it."
Which is it, 1245 or 1250?
She suspected bribery
She had heard of The Graveyard Of The Elephants, the place where old elephants went to die.
The kitchen was Where Old Grease Went To Die.
The food was strictly for those with a Death Wish.
Are any of the main characters going to show up at canon start untraumatized? Because I started reading this before the dark tag was added and at this point I’m too invested to stop.
OH SHI-
CHAPTER TITLE (No fortunate daughter)
civil war in a foreign heavily forested country
main capital taken by the enemy
WHOOO BOYS
pack em stack em and rack em BOYS !!!
WHERE GOIN TO NAM!!!!
WELCOM TO THE RICE FIELDS MOTHER FU--!!!
After Marius’ reforms, the Legions of Rome became a professional army. And they could turn any willing body into a legionnaire.
10201876
If the Equestrian Legions are anything like those of the Romans, they’ll do fine. The Roman Legions were a flexible unit, able to adapt their formations and strategies depending on the enemy and the environment. Furthermore, Italy is a hilly and mountainous country itself. They can fight in such environments, and pretty damn well to boot.
I wonder what kind of bonus the recruiter gets for nabbing an 8 year sign up as a war unicorn.
Definitely a mercenary move, that sign-up, and if Rarity turns out to sign up right there, extremely impulsive. Her and Mac don't even know what wars are going down where, and don't seem all that interested in doing their homework.
What I'm trying to say is that it rather undercuts what sympathy I have for these two... is what I was writing until I remembered:
Rarity and Mac can't be much older. Jesus, how young do they recruit them in Equestria? Are they even old enough to drink or marry?
