Interesting twists Pinkie visiting Discord in her dreams somehow isn't a surprise in the least. I almost wonder if something like that happened in original
An interesting dream, but an entertaining one it would seem.
Oh. Well @#$%#.
What is a dream really, but the sleep of reason? Of course it would be Pinkie to slip through the cracks, a more gifted Never-No you would be hard-pressed to find.
They can be both.
Well frag, something back along the timeline broke real bad...
Black-lung? Damn it all...
Well that's a raw deal all around. Doesn't matter if East Wind was deceived or not, her station is far too high for her not to bear full responsibility for her actions.
Ooooookkkaaaayyyyy... So somewhat modified origins and backstory for most of the cast, but still largely in the same shape, save for Rarity I suppose. AJs family seems to be largely the same though.
So now Hurricane is going to have to live with a particularly nasty stigma because her mother was arrested for treason. I can already see poor Hurricane getting bullied for it. And for Pinkie, she has a stereotypical Irish person for a father while she herself has what I suspect is Black Lung Disease. A life like that I wouldn't blame her for having someone like Discord for a friend.
You certainly know how to give the Mane 6 some tough beginnings.
All I can say is wow. Really good job on this chapter. Pinkie's thoughts and character development in this universe make sense In this universe, she's a mine worker who has already developed black lung as a teenager, her father is a bad-tempered alcoholic and her only escape seems to be dream world visits to Discord. Yeah, I can certainly see where Pinkie would NOT exactly be entirely sane (and, in fact, eventually adopt the good-natured, but somewhat loopy party animal personality as a way of regaining the childhood that got taken away from her WAY too early and make sure others don't end up enduring the soul-crushingly rough lives she had to endure in her earlier life). And, I can even see where Twilight and Pinkie might end up bonding a bit a few years later on (Pinkie teaching Twilight how to focus more on the good than the bad [once she's been in the "party animal" game for a couple of years], Twilight teaching Pinkie how to read).
Let's see, Twilight was raped by a teacher a year before becoming Celestia's personal student (and her big brother will probably end up becoming a Shell-Shocked Veteran), Rarity is fighting in this universe's answer to the Vietnam War, Rainbow's mother was arrested for treason, well, Applejack is probably the most similar to canon thus far (but her big brother will still have post-war issues) and Pinkie is in such a soul-crushingly depressing (if not downright scary) life that she retreats into dream world meetings with a chaos god. Yeah, I'm actually shuddering to imagine what Fluttershy is going through.
But, anyway, definitely looking forward to more of this.

There's something more appealing to that approach than the charmed lives they were given in the show.
Also, leaving this here:
You know... I don't know if I've seen Spike around? Didn't she hatch the egg?
I need 50 cc's of concentrated hugs, STAT!
Man this really hit me right in the feels
Your interpretation of a "rock farm" just being how child-pinkie understood a mine is really cool! It actually makes a lot of sense, and I could totally see that being what was actually meant. I am curious though as to why, in your mind, it was Limestone that went to Ponyville and not Pinkie? Did you have a chain of events in mind, or was it just "Pinkie has to still be on the rock farm, so we'll just have one of the others leave."?
Likely Dash's mom will be fine but loses her position as consul, so is the reason why Dash is always trying to be number 1? As a way to make up for her mother's failures?
Also, did anyone notice that both of Pinkie's sisters are in Ponyville?
10577507
Heheheheh.
10577524
Fairly different backstories, yes. Glad you like it.
10577533
When put like that, yeah, Discord as a friend? Not so bad. Even with his... differences.
10577644
As you point out, I'm already extensively thinking on future character interaction - and I'm glad you've noticed some possibilities! Thanks for the review!

In my opinion, adversity forges ponies into Elements, not an easy life. What is Laughter without sadness? Generosity without self-sacrifice?
10578088
Yeah. He's going to be around, I just keep putting off introductions. He'll be in soon, relatively.
10578159
*Sad Saxophone Noises*
10578357
Was surprisingly difficult to write this part, even as vague as I left some... things. Did its purpose tho, if it hit you in the feels.
10578385
Glad you like the Rock Farm thing. As for the rest, Pinkie is going to Ponyville. Limestone just ran there first. More will be clear as time passes.
10578411
Yeah, she was. Also, the Mane Six will all their own problems that must be worked through to become greater ponies, ones who truly represent an element. You'll see more Dashie pretty soon.
Ooof. Rainbow and Pinkie are having a rough time. And it hurts. Right in the feels.
So is Basalt Pie not Pinkie's father in this story? I think it was Basalt Pie you had in the army with Shining Armor, I know there was a Pie last name character with Shining Armor not sure who this shmuck is who needs to be thrown into the sun.
This is definitely going to be added to my fanfiction library and will almost certainly be due for a reread upon completion.
As to this chapter...This has got to be the second most depressing of the Mane Six thus far.
*Fluttershy was bullied by her peers but not too much besides as far as I know.
*RD was born into privilege and had a very firm and somewhat cold but not unloving relationship with her mother who was apparently involved in the attempted coup and at best will lose all political/social standing and at worst...
*Applejack seems to be pretty much the same as in canon
*Rarity is currently deployed overseas in what I recall is kinda similar to the Vietnam war
*Twilight was (and it pains me to even type this) raped by an elementary teacher who was part of a larger crime ring.
*and Pinkie uneducated hard child labor on top of an abusive father or uncle who gets violent when drunk and based on some evidence in this chapter Maud has taken on the role of the whipping boy to save her from his beatings (and possibly other passions).
Not the first time that I've seen darker backstories for the Mane Six, but dang if it gets any easier especially with how good of a writer you are.
I just recently started reading this again, picking up where I left off. Was there a reason given for why Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash have different names?
"Feels like this night will never end, doop doot doot, I guess it just depends~" I KNOW THIS SOMG AND LOVE IT
10578860
Yeah... Hurts me in the fells too, pal.
10579274
Basalt is not her father, yes, he is her Great Uncle. Her father is yet unnamed in the story. Sergeant Basalt Pie is indeed Shining's direct superior in the Royal Guard.
10579343
Well... It is depressing, yeah. I promise it has a purpose, though! Glad you like the story.
10579883
No reason, but someone correctly guessed that it has to do with changing your name being significant to ponies.
10580532
IT IS THINE CALLING
10580532
Hee, I love that song!
Love the story and can't wait for the next chapter.

Excellent points.
It's a bit surprising that so many listened to the ex director of IS - who has been disgraced and personally fired by a furious Celestia herself. If he had been fired by Cadence instead it would make some sense.
Also it's pretty damning for them all that they went for a large violent coup instead of something with more finesse. Even if they had been "right" it's likely that the damage and death toll would've annoyed Celestia. It also only takes one of the soldiers saying yeah no I'm not attacking the palace and an Alicorn to blow the whole operation open.
Griffon is happy. Much happy warbles and chirps. Good story. Want more.
Want more now
Makes grabby claws. Gib!!!!
East Wind has basically admitted her mistake and accepted her Dishonor for being involved in the coup attempt. Pretty much like Sweetie Drops did. Swallowing her pride and surrendering her position rather than make excuseses.
Have to wonder what made Igneous Rock Pie into a pony his dauguters fear and had to getaway from. Did Cloudy Quarts die in this timeline and he never got over her loss?
