Here, I'm thinking... Doesn't Link normally carry around a handy stash of destructive/mobility objects? Depending on which game his loadout is from, these may include hookshot/clawshots, useful as escape- or explosives of various sorts, from bombs to bombchus to even bombarrows. Then there's the games with fire/ice arrows... Not even counting the various stun-the-enemy abilities Link often gets.
Maybe he's out of bombs, worried about burning down the forest... Or wishes to save the rabbit while he's at it?

Keep in mind, after his first fight with a timberwolf, he decided that his curiosity wasn't worth his life and was attempting to return home to better arm himself. What that means is ultimately covered once we are with him again.

Link is a force to be reckoned with yes, but keep his description of them in mind as towering over him. That in addition to their numbers, Link having left a good bulk of his stuff at home, etc means this is not going to be an easy fight for him.
