...holy crap...can we make this cannon? This is my new Head-cannon, from here on season six plus is not cannon, THIS IS!! Seriously, THIS is the kind of reformation I'd have gone for with Starlight Glimmer. Well composed piece of work, exploring the logical conclusion and extreme of the Mare's ideals and work. After all that, we see what ultimately came to be, and honestly, I'm well pleased by it!! Well done, and best of luck.

Just to make sure I understand this, what we're seeing is Glimmer looking into one reality caused by her actions?

7394911 Yes, it is an alternate future where rather than trying to destroy Twilight's past and prevent the meeting of the six Element bearers, she tried to destroy Twilight's friends and family, undercutting the Princesses, fanning the flames of hatred towards those who excelled and eventually destroying the world through reckless advancement and brutal political control of Equestria.

Whew boy.
Cutie marks are pretty damn important. Maybe Starlight should have put more thought into that before figuring out how to get rid of them. We know from Tirek's draining that they are deeply tied to a pony's magic, and magic is quite literally what makes the world work. Without it... whatever resistance a world would have against pollutants would become pretty much nonexistent. I suppose the Everfree Forest and whatever other spots of "unnaturalness" there are across the world would be the safest against the toxins, but there's only so much those tiny pockets of what we'd consider to be normal nature could do when the world around them is turning into a cesspit.

Where was Discord in this? I can't imagine him just putting up with somepony going around trying to set up the sort of fascist, dictatorial false equality (sure, he was a dictator with absolute power, but he didn't do any of that "law" business). Did Discord ever get free in this timeline? Or does the equality spell have some... horrific effects on a being whose magical nature is (and whose special talent could be said to be) that of Chaos? Maybe she zapped it with him while he transformed into a pony, then he couldn't turn back.

A painfully brutal decision on Twilight's part, but I have a hard time imagining a different option with the scenario she provided. Extracting a hoofful, or even a hundred or more, poneis from the crowd without the mob turning on them? She'd have to use magic to grab and carry that many, then to purify them of the toxins, then to preserve them (which would probably be harder as they are older and not newborns)... and magic is in limited supply. Although I don't think she could have taken any but the children... I found it quite telling that nopony asked her to at least save the foals.

I worried for a moment about maintaining the ecosystem in a completely isolated environment, until I realized how silly that was with an alicorn and a hive of transforming changelings (who feed on just love). They've got the earth pony and the pegasus magic to keep the plants growing, the animals reproducing, and the weather working... at least enough so that this little patch of life is still there to seed the reborn world.

You know, this ties into a headcanon of mine, a bit--a reason why so much of Equestria isn't industrialized, and why the Super Speed Cider Squeezy 6000 never got a patent. Ponies either need to eat magic to live, or magic is required for food to properly produce nutrients; therefor, earth ponies must be physically involved in the food business. Oh, the food might taste just as good, and there'll be a whole lot of it... but you'd still suffer from malnutrition and possibly death. It would just take longer.
I mean, this headcanon doesn't actually fit into the story (starvation issues are from rampant pollution and magic-loss, not industrializing the food industry). But it made me think of it, and as I'm not very good at thinking of things to critique about a story I mostly just find things to rant about until I feel like I've made a post that I think sufficiently shows that I've paid attention to and was engrossed by the story.

Damn...

I'm a true follower of "you reap what you sow"...but even I'd be sick for a long time after something like this.

I'm guessing the trouble would be caring for them. Limited resources. The Changelings are her assistants partially because of their low upkeep.
