The war was almost over. Nightmare Star had been driven from the cities of Equestria and forced back to her lair in Canterlot. The largest army the nation had ever seen was ready to strike her last fortress and put an end to her reign of terror. The Nightmare's final hour had come.
But when Twilight Sparkle began the assault on the city, things did not go according to plan. The Princess of Friendship was faced with an impossible choice – and the lives of her friends hung in the balance.

Seems a bit cliche honestly. Alicorn goes evil and threatens to destroy the world...blah. It feels kind of cheap and facade like without the build up. Hopefully Twilight's chat with Death will explain some of that.

This story was inspired by the Nightmare Sun MLP playing card. When I saw that I thought "One day I'll have to base a story on that." So I did. I realize it's not terribly original, but it's something I wanted to do. I was kind of hoping Nightmare Sun would appear in the show itself, but sadly she did not.
In this story I decided to try an experiment. Usually a long story spends dozens of chapters building up, and then gets to the finale at the end. I thought I'd see what happened if I skipped all that. It's true you do miss something, but it does mean the story can be told rather quickly, and you can get right to the point. It take a long time to write a hundred thousand words. Novels are expensive to write; they take a lot of time and energy. If it turns out your idea was bad, you've lost months of your life. In a short story, you're just out a few hours.

You mean Nightmare Star I think. I can't remember if I have a copy or if it was somebody else at the pre-release I went to... She looks pretty outlandish.
Personally I would say that you're really not telling a story; At best you are relating a few details of a fictional history. Certainly I agree that it takes a lot time to write that many words, but generally I'd say it's worth it. Alas, I've yet to write anything that exceeded 10-12k words (largely unfinished work). You're free to think what you like, but I don't think you can really get to or make a point without a context to understand it within. Whether any idea is a bad idea may be a matter of opinion, but in any case you would hopefully revise and improve things rather than spend that much time spewing words.
Hope we get a sequel to this!

I had a feeling that 'Death' had something to do with the Nightmare Star corruption ever since he implied that Twilight could become Queen and rule over everyone.
I think that he definitely said that to Celestia. 
I'm so glad that Twilight's common sense came to the rescue.
I really enjoyed this short-story, it worked very well to just start at the climax, especially with that epilog. While it could have been fun to get some insight to what lead up to the event, it would have had the risk of becoming very predictable (the corruption theme is rather common after all). This is a great take on the story type and It creates a great start for a longer story of what happens from now on.
