What anon-a-miss fiasco?

I suppose I should add in an Author's Note, but the Anon-a-miss fiasco is referring to the Equestria Girls Christmas Special comic book put out by IDW.

5425192 Dammit, I was afraid it was referring to that. I want to read it so badly but have no way to. :raritydespair:

Totally out of the loop on the whole Anon-a-miss thing, but it didn't hinder my enjoyment of the story. As usual, your characterization of Sunset shines, this time bouncing off the considerably more-stable Applejack. As she frequently does in canon, AJ serves the role of the rock, the anchor point that other characters use for support. In most cases, Twilight would probably serve the role best (when she's around), but for this one, AJ and her history fits the bill better. Twilight wouldn't be able to relate to what she's been through.

Anyway, the story was solid all around, methinks. Good pacing, the emotional content felt right, and the stage was set nicely, I felt. Still not sure how I feel about that kiss. It was a nice tender moment they shared beforehand, but I dunno. Felt ever-so-slightly out of left field. Way, way better than some I've seen, though. The dialogue felt good and fitting, though. I could totally see this conversation taking place in canon (assuming the show was willing to openly deal with the subject of death).

Overall, a good story that I quite enjoyed. I can't get the image of Sunset sitting with a mug of hot chocolate and looking out at the falling snow out of my head (not that I'm complaining). That's something someone really needs to draw. Nice work.

In my defense, Sunset Shimmer is kind of a creature of impulse, despite her intelligence. Also one of the things that kind of irritates me in some fictions (fan and otherwise) is that romances always feel pre-determined, or "meant to be". Romances aren't always led up to, confusing, or overanalyzed. Sometimes they just HAPPEN as a result of an impulse, or a spontaneous act, something that even the two who enter into it don't foresee before it happens, but you always, always, know exactly who the couples are going to be when it comes to fiction. It's nice to see relationships develop organically, I guess, but it gets boring when it's the same slow buildup every time.

Like seriously, when was the last time you read a story/watched a movie where you didn't pinpoint within 5 minutes of her introduction who the protagonist's love interest was going to be?

That's... a really good point. Sunset is definitely impulsive. We've seen several examples of that in canon. She's especially impulsive when she's emotionally charged.

Also, yeah, romances in fiction are usually really predictable, especially to the trope-savvy. I think, in this case, it's just me and my own biases at work here. I have a serious pet peeve with stories going along all normal and then go, "Suddenly, shipping." This wasn't one of those cases, though, as there was some shared affection and bonding between them before the moment proper. In this case, my reaction isn't, "Wait, what? Where did that come from?" and more of a surprised little, "Oh, well, that's an interesting turn of events." And it wasn't some ridiculous, over-the-top gesture, either, just a quick peck on the cheek. Regardless, the Booting of the go-to buildup in favor of spontaneity in a true-to-life fashion gets points for freshness and verisimilitude in my book (both of which are things I value highly).

Ooh, nice revelation. I'm copying it down to inform my version of the character.

Sunset Shimmer's footsteps were light as she stepped through the crowded bedroom in the heart of Sweet Apple Acres. Past Rainbow Dash face down on the bed with her butt in the air, past Fluttershy curled into a small ball inside a sleeping bag on the floor just underneath her. Past Pinkie Pie passed out on top of her own sleeping bag with her face smashed into the keys of her laptop, and past Applejack propped up against the wall beside the door with her hat lowered over her eyes. Past them all out into the hallway beyond.

Wait, where's rarity?

"To say the least." Sunset cradled her mug in both palms now. "My mom passed away when I was a filly... and my dad was never the same after that. He took care of me and all, but when Celestia discovered my talent for magic, told me how great I could be, I never bothered looking back again. I didn't even talk to him for years before I came here."

How sad. :fluttercry:

"Car accident. Wasn't anybody's fault, really. It was just dark and drizzling rain. The police never sorted out what caused the first collision... but at some point, they got caught up in it all."

😭

"Spooky?" Applejack chuckled. "I guess it sounds like somethin' out of a horror movie, sure. But ever since then I knew Granny Smith was right. They were up there, watchin' over us. Bein' proud of us..." Applejack reached a hand out to take Sunset's hand in a tight, firm grip. "Bein' proud of all of us, if I may be so bold."

That's probably what my grandparents/my dad's parents are doing right now in heaven as my dad has sadly lost them both in the last 2 years. First my grandmother in march 2020 from her health issues to my grandfather's passing in November 2021 from a brain tumor he had gotten months prior. Even though they're gone I know they're in a better place just like applejack's parents.
