Twilight's Name Tag is Missing

Author's Note:

My try at a one-shotter. Enjoy.
Also, Canterlot Elementary is a place where I assume Twilight learned her fundamental smarts (i.e. Math, English, etc.), er, whatever.
"It's not a real place in the show!"
A.) I know.
B.) We don't know that for sure.
"Princess Celestia's School For Gifted Unicorns?"
It's a side thing.

"Another day, another lesson!" a lavender filly happily implied as she made her way to Canterlot Elementary. Her name was Twilight Sparkle, quite the star student in the place of education. Twilight had quite some power, and was also accepted into Princess Celestia's School For Gifted Unicorns. However, this school was for her basic smarts. She sat down, awaiting her teacher's instruction.

"Alright, class! Today, we will not be here in this school. We will taking a field trip!" the teacher said.

A blue pegasus with black hair raised his hoof. "Yes, Sky Thunder?"

"Where are we going?" he asked.

"To Manehattan," she replied.

To this, the whole class went berserk. Nearly everypony in the entire room wanted to go to Manehattan. It was THE place to be in Equestria, with tall buildings that pierced the sky, parks, businesses, everything they had ever wanted. Twilight showed the least amount of enthusiasm of all. Even though she too wanted to go to Manehattan, she hoped it would be with her parents, or her BBBFF, Shining Armor, or her whole family. She didn't suspect it to be with her whole class.

"One more thing, everypony!" the teacher remarked.

The whole class stopped.

"You must wear name tags at all times, and try to be back before 4 o'clock. Stay safe, and have fun!"

As the class departed, the teacher handed out each pony's name tags, starting with Twilight's. The train ride to Manehattan would not be a short one. It was a roughly 200 yard walk to the train station from the schoolhouse. Of course, Twilight barely talked with anypony, not even the teacher. She could hear everypony else talking. The conductor yelled, "ALL ABBOOOOOOAAAAARRRRRRDD!!!" prompting everypony to board. Shortly thereafter, the train departed for Manehattan. About 30 minutes into the ride, Twilight began to feel sleepy, and it wasn't long until she was asleep. She wore her name tag the entire time she had it.

...Or did she?

When Twilight woke up, the train was 3 minutes from Manehattan. She noticed that everypony in her class was looking out their windows and at the gargantuan Maretropolis the city was. Before anyone knew it, the train stopped and everyone hauled flank for the exit. Twilight simply trotted. Everypony was amazed at the 50 stories of buildings above their heads.

"Hmm... I feel like something is missing..." Twilight thought. She looked at herself in a window.

"GAAAAAHH!!! MY NAME TAG!!!" she screamed. She searched high and low for one hour around the area where the train was. She checked trash cans, asked locals and classmates where it was, checked the ground in some areas, but to no avail. Twilight felt defeated, and sighed.

She spent her day enjoying herself for the most part. She looked at stores, played in the parks (even with other fillies), the kind of stuff one would think a 7-year-old filly would do in her first visit to a city. Sometimes, this happiness would be slightly interrupted when she saw the name tags of other fillies in her class. Either way, that didn't stop her. She decided to see a Cuttlefish concert, which she enjoyed (sometimes, her mother would listen to their music, and Twilight became immersed in their music). She looked around to see what everypony else was doing. She saw two colts who were in a Rock music shop, fillies who were in pet stores and flower shops, and many, many fillies playing in parks. Twilight saw a bookstore, and it felt like it was a black hole, pulling in her filly spaceship. She looked at a clock. 1:00 p.m.

"Good! I may as well catch up on my reading. What's the worst that could happen?" she said.

There were hundreds, no, THOUSANDS of books based in the shelves, and there was even a small library for ponies to read up on their books in. Twilight picked out several books; some were in series, and some were short stories. She read Diary of a Wimpy Colt, The Fire in Us, and many, many other books. Before she knew it, time was against her. 30 minutes, an hour, 2 hours. Twilight read a total of 20 books, end to end. She glanced at the clock, and her eyes grew as big as the table she was sitting at.

"Nonononononononononononononono!!!!" Twilight yelled. It was 3:59 p.m., and the train and all the other classmates were on the other side of the city. She swiftly put back every single book she read and bolted for the exit. She galloped with all her speed to the train station, occasionally yelling "WWWAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIITTTTTTT!!!!!" to see if she could get the train to wait for her. She dashed through a whole park through its jungle gym, its main play area, and right through the swings. Getting through was slightly painful. She saw the train in sight as the last filly got on board, and soon, Twilight made it.

"Pardon me, ma'am, but who are you?" the conductor asked.

Panting, Twilight replied, "My name is Twilight Sparkle. I'm with the school group here."

"The Ponyville one?" the conductor replied. Twilight could make out a yellow pegasus filly with a pink mane and tail looking at her from over one of the seats. When Twilight looked, the filly turned her head back.

"No, the Canterlot one," Twilight implied.

"Alright. Get to your car, now," he replied.

The train ride back wasn't short, still. Even so, everypony was sad as the silhouette of Manehattan vanished into the horizon. The train finally arrived back in Canterlot. Everypony was talking about how great Manehattan was; what they did, where they went, stuff one would expect young ponies to talk about after their first visit to a large city. Twilight, however, was still confused about her name tag.

"Twilight?" a white, red-haired filly asked.

"Hmm?" Twilight replied.

"You left this on the train when we got to Manehattan," the filly said, and showed a laminated card. It was Twilight's name tag.

With this, Twilight fainted.

"...And that is my scariest childhood memory," Twilight said.

"Twilight?" Pinkie Pie replied. "Your childhood was weird."

This was fun to read, but it felt a bit rushed. I'd recommend slowing down, taking more time to describe. "Show, not tell."

She searched high and low for 1 hour

First of all, write "one" in word form. Also, how likely is it that the teachers would let them do that, let alone wander in the city by themselves?

5115720 1.) Thank you for the mostly positive comment.
2.) Yeah, I have that rushing problem. It's bad.
3.) Will do (the "one" part).
4.) Let's assume it's the end of the school year. Plus, the children know very well not to go into very suspicious places, such as dark alleys.

1. No problem!

2. I'm sure you'll figure it out.

3.Oki-dokes!

4. That works!

5115793 So, all in all, it was a great story (even being my best)? :pinkiehappy:

That title tho...
Immediately, I think of that one Spongebob episode where he thought he lost his name tag.

5115799 It was a wonderful story!:pinkiehappy:

This story was successfully successful?

:pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy:

hehehe, now that was very enthralling if I have to say so myself.

Wow... GOOD JOB PINKIE!

A riveting tale of loss and tragedy, culminating in a grand reunion.

5115727 is it weird that this reminded me of that old sponge bob episode? cause it did :rainbowlaugh: awesome story:pinkiehappy:

...Huh? This makes no sense. That's why I love it. :rainbowlaugh:

Cuttlefish concert
Diary of a Wimpy Colt

Not sure if to laugh or to face palm

5116293 That's exactly what I was thinking! :pinkiegasp:

Also, filly Twily is awesome :rainbowkiss: Have a like and favorite!

I love how no one noticed the Easter Egg at the end.
A follow to whoever notices it.

Maybe my calling as a writer rests in the hooves of Random/Comedy stories...
Good to know...

She lost her name tag?! AHE AHE AHE AHE
I know that quote at the end. Im going to hate myself when I remember.

It was a good fic, but it was confusing at times like the filly resembling Fluttershy or the mention of Maretropolis (but nothing major )and, for some reason, it feels like something was missing.
...And I have to give props for the flashback-inducing The Fire Within reference.

5216448 Well, no story is perfect, right?
The Fire Within... I love The Last Dragon Chronicles.

5216448 The filly resembling Fluttershy WAS Fluttershy! I put that in as an Easter Egg!

5216448 I didn't mention the actual Maretropolis. Some people call gigantic cities (i.e. Detroit) metropolises.

If anyone is wondering what my inspiration was for this story, it was based on a name tag mishap I had involving my church group's retreat to Springhill Camp. Only, my name tag wasn't missing. My last name was mixed up with my mom's last name, so yeah.
And, as ironic as it is, I lost my name tag there for the whole time. When did I find it? On the last day in the cabin, under a mattress. Yeah.:facehoof:

5117747 About that last line...

I ask, "What?"

According to the story, Twilight read 20 books in 2 hours and 59 minutes before realising she was late for the train. So, how long does it take for Twilight to read one book?

There were no matching search results of the book The Fire in Us. Diary of a wimpy colt is probably the Pont version of diary of a wimpy kid. Take the first book in the series for an example. It has 220 pages. It takes me 15 seconds to finish one page of the book. Suppose Twilight has super quick reading powers and can read one page in 5 seconds, she would need: 5x220=1100 seconds or 18 1/3 minutes to finish this book. Then she would have 179-18 1/3 minutes or 160 2/3 minutes to read the remaining 19 books, which is 8 minutes and 27 seconds for each book, which is 25 minutes and 21 seconds for my speed, not including the time Twilight needed to find the books, turn the pages, swap the books and to put them back to where they belong. Supposing there is a same number of words in a page of diary of a wimpy kid and the other books. Then each of the other books would have 507/5=101 pages. The first book of the diary of a wimpy kid series has 19784 words, which means that every other book has 19784/220x101= 9083 words each, meaning that Twilight read a total of 192361 words in 3 hours or 1068 words in one minute. Impressive. No wonder why she is Princess Celestia's star student.

How funny that Twilight would read a book such as diary of a wimpy kid. She should be reading loads of magic book and non-fiction.

PS reading speed may vary.

5711972 Everyone needs a break from time to time. Even the most OCD pony in Equestria.

Also, The Fire in Us is a parody of Chris d'Lancey's The Fire Within, the first book of a book series I love.

5711972 Plus, she's done so. Much. Reading, that she's able to read maybe two Harry Potter books in 1.5 hours, practically.

5711972 Don't try your mathematics on me, AJ. Trust me.

Good lord, this story did well. Shame it didn't last on a road to front page, but oh well.

6915413 (For God's sake, this is overdue.) I actually had a similar dilemma to both Spongebob and Twilight.

6992073 It's what inspired the story.

At my church group's fall retreat, I had my nametag the first day we were there. Next day, it's gone. It was like that until I rediscovered it the last day we were there, while packing up. It was under the mattress.
