Happy Hearth's Warming, everyone! Short chapter this time, but I wanted to get it out for the holiday. Hope you've all had a great time with friends and family, or at least kept yourselves entertained on the internets. Next chapter will be longer. We're grinding on toward the end!
Maybe 'grinding' is the wrong word. Eh, good enough.
See you next time!

Oh? Does that mean this story is close to ending? Im actually holding off reading it as Ive got too many stories Im reading that are incomplete and have a habit of re-reading entire stories if I forget whats going on xD
Tension level: 83%
Shitstorm imminent.

Sounds about right. Gotta' grind up rep with the neutral factions so we can buy that gear and enlist their followers when the s**t goes down. Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. Just hope we can hit Exalted before the raid Princess starts the Canterlot encounter. Gonna' be hard to beat if we don't.
/WoW off
7819003 You spoil us, sir. This has become one of my favorite tales to follow here on FimFiction.
Hope the counter-attack come soon...
If this keep up, there logically won't be anything they can do to stop the Redtails.
Kinda like 'Ryse: Son of Rome' in how logically, they should've fallen what with them being attacked at their capital and still somehow win by killing one person in an army that supposedly numbered in the millions and recover with their dying populous.
Damn, this story is having me on the edge of my seat, and rarely does that happen. It goes to say this story is quite the read.

Truly, he is a merciful God.
7819003 I'm sorta wondering here if the whitetail soldiers who are now fighting for the redtail are like Ramsay Bolton's dogs.
After all, Corvalix does make a pretty convincing Ramsay equivalent...
If you get what I'm sayin' here. Hehehehe....
God I can't wait to watch Cor get his shit kicked in. I can't wait to see the redtail lose. Damn it man!

Yeah, this is a pretty big departure from S&B. It's a story with a much larger scale, and the romance is a slow burner compared to being present right out the gate like in my previous story. I kinda consider it a return to what I used to write before I started writing pony stuff, with a larger focus on intrigue and warfare, though the romance is definitely still there.
7832689 Roughly 40 chapters in now, and I can make an assessment. I, personally, do not like the story. I still intend on reading it though. War is a bloody, messy affair, surrounded by death and damage, and I'm one of those who comes to read magical mythical technicolor ponies to avoid seeing more of such a thing. Reminds me far too much of reality, and unpleasant memories. And you have gone into great length to show off just how fucked up this war is, adding manipulation that would make Kevin Spacey proud (House of Cards). The romance is indeed very minor, which is usually my go-to genre for fanfiction.
However, like I said, I intend to continue reading. And not just because horse words online are free. S&B showcased that you had an excellent grasp of how to build characters and use the world around them to really make them stand out. It was to a degree that probably puts you with a handful of fanfiction writers on this site as far as quality goes. So, to see you expand to something far more daunting is interesting, despite my extreme distaste for the subject matter. The world in S&B was mostly in stone and present, but here... here you have Canterlot, the Everfree ruins (only in mention) and the Whitetail Woods. Everything else? It has been of your own creation. And that is what makes this story really pop, and why I'm willing to continue reading it. Rather than just characters with their own quirks, past, etc, you literally only had two locations, an event (Nightmare Moon) to start with your foundation. And you have handled it quite masterfully, I believe I can say that I've read printed novels with less effort and detail put into their worlds than you have done here.
The blending of Roman influence with some of the 'modern' Equestrian bits that a lot of people have used has also been well done. The Roman influence is actually visible on both sides. The formations, terms, and such on the Equestrian side, and the expansionism and desire to capture glory on the side of the Cervidae (think I spelled it right). Again, this speaks highly of your ability to world build.
As for the romance, I've enjoyed it so far, although I'll admit I wish it had a far heavier hand in things. It does seem to be more of a sub plot than the overall story focus, and as you stated, more in line with your prior stuff. I have not read any of your non pony content, so cannot accurate compare it, so I'll take your word for it. I do hope for some form of a happy ending for those two, Celestia is a given since you seem to be modeling this as a 'Nightmare Moon incident and the fallout from such' so the future events are, one can believe, set as the show is. I just hope Tercio gets his form of a happy ending when you do wrap up the story.
Finally (Sorry for the rambling, really wanted to give my thoughts though) for the future... I've noticed in a few of your comments that you are coming into the home stretch. Your remarks of going back to your more usual fare makes me less hopeful you'll do a heavier focus on romance should you stick around the site here, but even if you don't it'll have been a nice ride.
So... hate the story's premise, but too well written to put down, and has just enough romance that I need to see how it ends. And, if there are any flaws, too well written to care about trying to find them. Good work, Dresfab.

I can't say I've ever had someone say they dislike a story's concept but intend to keep reading through it, but there's a first time for everything I suppose. I can understand not liking technicolor ponies going to war, though I personally think the juxtaposition of bright and cheery cartoon horses being dragged through the proverbial mud of very human conflicts is what makes things like Fallout and Warhammer 40k crossovers so popular. It turns the setting on its head.
I appreciate the compliments on my writing. World building has always been my favorite thing to do, and I admit to delving into scenery porn more than is probably necessary. Creating new characters and species, then filling in the world around them, is always fun. I haven't read any of the comics, but apparently there are actually sapient deer in Whitetail Wood now. I started writing this story before that happened, so I will take full credit for the comic's author borrowing my idea
I try to make the world the story takes place in feel alive, and in a story like JBtD where we jump between so many characters I feel it's doubly important to establish that their respective locations come across as grounded, yet different from one another. At least, that's the goal.
As far as the romance bit goes, I had intended it to play a larger part in the story when I first started out. I fully intended it to be a slow burn where two characters fall in love over time, as opposed to starting with the relationship already established, but as the story grew and I added more characters I found that the romance was starting to become just another element of a rather sweeping series of events. At this point I'm relatively happy with the state of it. I could focus more on just Tercio and Celestia, but that would take up even more page space, and Celestia knows I've spent far too much time on this story as is. I am indeed trying to wrap things up here, since it's been nearly three years, but rest assured I am committed to creating an ending that will do justice to the characters I've created or included. Hopefully it'll be satisfying to my readers.
As for my future works...I can't say for sure what they'll be. I will most likely finish Red Sky, as it's languished in a half-complete state for years and is definitely my favorite story. After that, I have some story ideas I've had floating around for a long time that I would like to see put to virtual paper. They won't be nearly as long as S&B or JBtD, that's for sure. Will they be romance? Possibly, but after both of these monstrous works have been completed I think I'll likely have gotten all of the romance writing out of my system. I don't want to be tied down to one genre, which is exactly why this story is such a departure from my previous one. I would, of course, love it everyone stuck around and read what I come up with, but if not then I appreciate that you've taken so much time to read through what I do have.

I do that actually. Once I start reading a story past the first chapter, I am obligated to finish it in its current entirety.
And the trend continues! What will happen next!?
I just had a thought, and had to go look up antlers to confirm. Now I know your deer are only superficially similar to the deer we know and (sometimes) love, but there's this whole shedding season thing for antlers. It's mid- to late winter. Which we're coming up to in the story. And I'm just imagining the deer pushing to win their war before early spring brings a sudden lack of magical ability, which may force the playing field back in favor of the ponies, who don't shed their magic-channeling apparatuses.
Because the image of suddenly-bald deer needing to play hide and seek warfare after all this open combat is just too much!

Just as planned.
