Hey there everyone. So, I took a week and laid out the path for the rest of the story, and I think I'm pretty happy with it. I finally have a concise list of things I want to happen before the story ends, instead of sort of meandering about and coming up with things off the cuff. I should have done this a long time ago, but hey, better late than never. It's time to kick this story into MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE so I can actually get it finished at some point.

On an unrelated note, I picked up an MSI GTX 1060 last week, and I've been enjoying super high frame rate, ultra-detailed gaming ever since. Huge improvement over my old GTX 770. 128fps in Overwatch? Feels good, man.
D.Va is still bae.
Enjoy the update!
Thunderburst - "You swore on your life you would protect the princess"
Tercio - "What? I used a condom!"
Ba dum-tss
7564507 Dorito goblin is, most, certainly not Bae.
IN FACT, it is Mercy who is the bae! GOOD DAY,SIR!
Quick, request aid from the local Necromancers, they might know a spell array that can enhance the area of effect of Celestia's light based spells by several orders of magnitude, or at least supplement the front lines with excessive amounts of useful grunts, and body shields.
7564695
HOW DARE YOU, SIR. I'll have you know that our Doritos and Mountain Dew goddess is the finest of waifus, and Gremlin D.Va is now canon with the new emote.

GIT FUKIN GUD
Ya know, so far I've only seen Earth ponies and SOME pegasi in the war. Where are all the magical battlemage unicorns and the rest of the pegasi?
7564507
Okay, so I had this chapter up for longest time but never got around to it aside from just starting right after the... remembering parts bit... thingy... the italicized stuff!
I'll get to it later, tonight, probably, on my phone.
And my sensor is definitely busted. It was only within this week that I kept wondering when you would post a chapter, but I kept thinking it was going to be just another week from now. Which would turn into another week from now. I did NOT expect a chapter to be posted today.
Not that I'm complaining mind you.
You know what I have to say to that?
derpicdn.net/img/view/2015/8/1/948369.gif
7564736
I honestly kept shouting that out in my house in a semi-bad British accent.
And she reminds me of Farseer Macha. Because of the... things... on the side of her face.
7564800
There have been multiple segments devoted to mixed race combat. Pegasus hit and run squads, teleporting tactics used at least three times that I can think of, flying scouts, barrier units...just because I don't have unicorns hurling fireballs and lightning like an RPG mage doesn't make them any less important to the battles.
7565835 But the bulk is still Earth ponies.
We've seen relatively little of pegasi and especially unicorns. I kinda even forgot about their existence for a while. Or where all the stuff you mentioned was. The "mages" of the deer have more "screen-time" when they put magic into use than the supposely 'magical kingdom of Equestria'.
7566056
Yes, the bulk is still earth ponies. They're hardy and the most numerous in this early timeline, and tend to devote themselves to physical, earth bound careers more than their horned or winged brethren. I have covered as much in the story.
There is plenty of magic in Equestrian military tactics. However, I have made a decision since the very start to keep things relatively grounded in the realm of possibility in order to give some familiarity to the setting. Just as in the show itself, most unicorns are not master spell casters, and are instead limited to simple levitation most of the time. Maybe once in a while they'll throw up a shield. Only truly gifted unicorns can teleport.
The same goes for the deer. Levitation is the norm, and anything above that is the mark of a skilled mind. No one is immensely overpowered, not even Celestia, because that would be boring and make for one sided battles.
7566142 I think it's more boring following the norm of everyone is average than to make Powerful characters work.
They are alicorns...They are something special...And they can be replaced with a normal unicorn and no one would notice is a terrible idea.
7566149
Celestia is still clearly the most powerful - don't forget her decisive spell that put an end to Secundus. However, such attacks are exceedingly draining on her, and if I had her zap everyone into oblivion it would be a short story.
You can believe magic users not having an enormous advantage over their adversaries is boring, but I have given a consistent power norm for unicorns and deer because I feel it is what fits the story the best. I can't please everyone.
If you really wanna split hairs, keep in mind that Celestia has never been shown to be immensely powerful in the show, either. She got defeated by Chrysalis, after all. If anything, I give her -- and magic users in general -- a power boost for the sake of the story.
7566229 Plot convience the lot of them.
But please keep in mind that the power of 4 alicorns seem to be about equal if a bit stronger than the raw magic power of the entirety of Equestria and Discord's. And they carved up the countryside and mountains in Twilight vs Tirek battle. The power also make Twilight lost control for a bit and teleporting all over the places...And based on the sun position, pretty far each time without breaking a sweat.
7566253
Twilight had the power of 3 alicorns and her own superior power when she fought Tirek. If you knock that power down to a quarter, it would fit just fine inside my story.
You can't argue "plot convenience" and then turn around and argue canonical power levels. The former is out-of-universe, and as far as canon is concerned it doesn't matter *why* Celestia lost, only that she *did*. Canonically, she was weaker than Chrysalis. You can either say canon doesn't matter, or you can say it does. You can't do both.
The great thing about fanfics is that I'm free to do what I please. I don't have to stick to canon. I can bend and stretch the rules, I can make characters weaker or more powerful, I can even create new powers out of the blue. I do not claim that JBtD is anything approaching canonical, and if you aren't happy with certain elements of the story, well...sorry. That's not your decision to make. Like the saying goes: you can't please all of the people all of the time.
7566275 I blame plot convience because it is convience that she is weak so the main cast can be heroes (conspiracy theories said that she held back to teach and guide her little ponies). But when the magic might was unleashed, it is wonderful and awesome to behold.
Cutting the power to carved up countryside and destroy mountain into 4 pieces and you still have 4 pieces of mountain carving power of lesser degree.
The endurance seem to be somewhere around being punt through a mountain (Ex: Twilight) and being shot at by stone castle 'cutting' beam (Ex: Celestia) (To achieve the same cutting power, you would need a currently experimental rail gun). And seemingly no scratch to show for it.
This is your story, I agree.
This is just me arguing the previous point.
I'm siding with the author here- he wrote it, his rules.
I do get what you mentioned about lack of direct combat roles for unicorns though, but they have been used as supporting elements in a few battles, assisting with concealment or shielding, which I think makes sense considering the time era- if they are less common you don't want them on the front lines mixing with the infantry combat lines, as their scarcity means they are an important resource to be protected.
7566374 I ain't gonna continue to argue about the world the author built. I, however, argue that more magic could be used. As of now, we can replace them all with human Roman Legionaries and no one will notice.
They don't need to stand right in front. They can shoot magical projectiles, and bolts, and beams, and what have you over the heads of the frontline Legionaries.
Enchantment is also missing. And the enchanters don't even need to be present on the battlefield.
Also, you can't use the excuse that the average unicorns have little more than the basics and their talents. These are military ponies. You don't went through military training without learning/improving something.
7564736
How bout Tracer?
Good chapter, maybe Thunderburst needed to disappear... *sharpens Gladius*
Hopefully the Zebras show up soon...
Cheers love! Calvary's Here!
7566568
I think you're cherry picking here. You claim we could replace the Equestrian military with Roman Legionaries (the latter of which is clearly inspiring the former) and no one would notice. I guess that means we can ignore:
-the pegasus strike teams that can quickly circumvent defensive formations to strike at back lines
-pegasus scouting parties that don't have to worry about an enemy's obstructions blocking their view,
-fly-over assaults with what equate to bombing runs using anti-personnel dart bundles
-the confusion and distraction caused by pegasus guards assaulting a mountain stronghold
-squad-sized teleportation to disrupt a battle line on more than one occasion
-barrier magic to stop incoming projectiles
-ice arrows that could nullify a barred gate thanks to unicorn enchanting (which you also claim doesn't exist)
-using magic to hurl projectiles from beyond physical reach and with great precision
-stopping an attacker with a magical stasis field so they can be finished off
-two different magically enchanted swords that were so powerful they were practically alive in their own right, one of which destroyed itself to give Victus the power to defeat the dark magic within his brother. Granted, this power has since been lost to time, but it did exist at some point in Equestria's history.
-unicorns using a massed charge to punch through an enemy's magical barrier with their own magical backlash
-ripping weapons out of the hooves of the enemy and instantly turning them against their owners
All of which would take immense training in order to be able to perform reliably in battle.
As I've said, I do not want pegasi or unicorns to feel vastly more powerful than their earth pony cousins. They have their advantages -- speed and maneuverability, or keen minds and powerful potentials to affect the outcome of the battle -- but they are not the backbone of Equestria. In this timeline, earth ponies are far greater in number, and the integration of all three races into a united culture is under way but not fully realized. Pegasi and unicorns are force multipliers, scalpels to the bludgeon of the earth pony-led military.
Nothing is stopping you from writing your own fanfic with vastly more powerful magic users that can shatter mountains or reshape the land at will. However, that is not my story. I can sit here and justify Celestia's magic use or unicorn magic all day, but if you're not willing to hear it then I am not going to waste any more time on it. I believe I've said enough as is.
Such an ugly way of putting it. The correct term is "boning".
I knew him putting this stuff out on Facebook would finally come back to bite him.
7566949
I've always been partial to "porking", personally.
7566568
The Pegasi were also stated to be the dominant military pony force for quite some time in an episode. How long ago that was, exactly, no one has any clue, but we know it was a thing.
Or if you wanna be really cynical about it, it could be just a silly kid's story and that the actual history is different.
But Drefsab has clearly created a world where the case is that earth ponies are pretty dominant here because they are more numerous. Even so, everyone is pretty equal in battle, as he clearly demonstrates in his last comment to you.
Yes, actually, he can. He wrote the story. If you want a story with powerful magic then... write it yourself, or find a different story. The author here has a clearly established world, with its own guidelines and rules and shit. You can say a unicorn should be more powerful, but what if they were drastically weaker before they joined the military and they can only now (after training) do the stuff they're currently capable of doing now? Oh wait, that means they did get stronger! This is their limit! This is the result.
7566987
7566836 And the cherries are delicious.
Seriously, though. I've never implied or said that I'm against you building your own world.
Just putting what I feel about the make up of ponies-at-arms... And get attacked right after for being honest. You know, one of the Element? A full answer would've worked.
And I was more arguing about how the power level of alicorns in canon won't fit into this while you argued that they do fit. But then you turn around and said that 'this is my world' which did not support your arguement that canon can fit into this.
7568252
Lol.
Dude wut?
We know this, but we're not necessarily saying that you're arguing such a point. But it is relevant to how a story such as this works, which is why we're pointing that element out.
None of us are attacking you. In fact. *Checks comments.* I don't see anything that could be considered even remotely mean. In fact, the first comment of yours that Drefsab responds to even has a like. As of this moment, not even a single one of your comments has a dislike.
I'll get to this later.
Where, where, though? And HOW? You vaguely imply this at first, and just now you're being more specific about it. And looking at Dref's comments... nowhere does he explicitly say that he's arguing about the canon here. In fact, he says this. "You can either say canon doesn't matter, or you can say it does. You can't do both."
Actually, reread all of his comments to you.
And so am I. Well, I'm making the same points he's making. Which, frankly, I shouldn't have to do, but I am doing so anyway, apparently. The points we are making are this. We're not talking about canon. We're talking about how everything fits into the story.
Finally, to sum up my points. This whole comment of yours, but specifically this part.
Is explained by this verdict.

We've seen how inclusive the Equestrian military is. I think they'd do really well recruiting all the deer
wenchesbattle sorceresses they can get their hooves on.7566949
7566963
My friend will never live down the phrase he gifted unto me.
"boning""porking""Excaliburizing the princess" And it works so well in this chapter! (Try to not imagine Thunderburst using that phrase now...)7568381 *Shrug*
I kinda lost track of everything now.
7568445 So...What you meant is...uhm...making the White Tails part of Equestria? You don't normally recruit foreigners into your military. Or are they something like a resistance force?
7568473
Resistance force... Mercenaries... It's all the same really. The point was that the Equestrians need more magic on their side, right? Well, we've seen lots of magical does, so if Equestrian starts recruiting all the disenfranchised ones, that'll kill two Corvalix' with one stone.
Plus, we'll get to see more of that slinky deer tail...
7568609 An army of mecenaries is a bad idea. They are only loyal to their commanders and money. Rome got sacked because of that.
But, yeah. They should use all the forces and resources that they have. The Redtails outnumbered them somewhere around 2 to one at the moment.
At least it's not around 1 to 23 like the situation the Roman 14th Legion faced, if what I digged up from Wiki is correct.

7568651
Well, yes, an entire army of mercenaries is generally a bad idea. But mercenaries are a thing because they're very good for fleshing out an army that may lack something the mercenaries can provide. It would be highly unfeasible to make an entire Equestrian army out of does, after all. Entertaining though...
Though, in this case, the whitetail collaborators have something much more motivating than money to fight for: liberating their nation from the redtail.
7569559 True.
Though, I'm still unsure of how modern Equestria's Whitetail Woods came to be.
7570447
It's all Celestia's fault! She da' man who's been keepin' a sista'-doe down!
7570447 I'm figuring the last vestige of a destroyed empire or maybe a long list colony of a dying deer people.
It is I Cato Sicarius who will destroy all these foolish Redtail!
I can't be the only one who sees it...
7583170
You know, I keep throwing in these 40k references wondering if anyone will get them, and without fail someone points them out.
Truly, you are all my battle bruvas.
7583170
I actually read that out loud in my best imitation of the voice. Very loudly, actually, I might add. Good thing there's a bunch of fans and two dehumidifiers going off in the basement....
7583328 I do quite enjoy the references, I couldn't help myself from laughing.
7568381
Sorry, I ended up breaking that one. This, "ZOMG MOAR UNICORN AND ALICORN MASTAR RACE PLZ!!" gets downright annoying after a while. I have a personal preference towards unicorns, but I hate seeing stories that make them ridiculously overpowered without any sort of good reason. I think Dref has done a terrific job balancing the race's unique power curves in his version of the world. Also, keep in mind that this is all happening somewhere just under the 1000 years before the canonical show. No Luna, no Cadance (I presume), and no especially "magically gifted" Twilight. Think about the extent of base unicorn magic in the show and then realize that's even after some 1000 years of development as a species.
7568252
Spoken like a true troll.
“Gentlemen you can’t fight in here!! This is the War Room!!!”
