Now in her late forties, Sunset Shimmer has built herself a career as a doctor. She has devoted her life to helping others, be it by prescribing pain killers or simply bandaging a scraped knee. A part of her longs to return to Equestria, but she is mostly happy with her new life. However, one day three very familiar girls drop by her office, one of them injured. Old memories flood back as Sunset is shown an unexpected harsh reality related to her high school life.

Sunset Shimmer and Princess Twilight Sparkle have both been plagued by odd dreams. Romantic escapades and tender moments between ponies they don't recognize that all end in tragedy.

Together, they investigate this phenomena, aware of the growing tug their hearts have for one another. The answers they find, however, may threaten to tear them apart.

Graduation is coming up for the Canterlot High Wondercolts, and Sunset Shimmer is questioning whether she should stay in the human world or come home to Equestria. While spending another lonely night in the bedroom of her apartment contemplating the same question over and over, she stumbles upon an old, worn out spiral notebook that she and her friends thought had once been lost. Seeing the many memories the notebook contains prompts Sunset to realize how much she's changed. Will she stay in the human world or will she come home to Equestria?
