An entry into the "AppleDash: Second Chances contest"

The cover art, if you must know, is from the show. I messed with it a bit to make the blacks even darker, so all that could be seen is AJ and RD.

On a hillside at the edge of Sweet Apple Acres, under the stars, Applejack and Rainbow Dash face the growing feelings they've been having for each other.

Applejack comes into her shared room with her marefriend, Rainbow Dash, to find Rainbow looking like she's living on two hours of sleep, sitting up, crying slightly; denying that, and plain out sleepy. When Applejack is able to get the truth out of Rainbow, will their relationship be effected?

This story takes place after the events of the episode "Magic Duel"

During the famous Magic Duel between Twilight and Trixie, the spell that Twilight shot at her friend Applejack actually turns her into a stallion. She now has to endure a month with her new gender and dealing with her brother who is obsessed in helping her. While also dealing with feelings of her new love for Rainbow Dash.

Applejack and Rainbow Dash spend a night on Sweet Apple Acres. In the darkness, they share a conversation.

Applejack is a simple mare, who has always had simple aspirations for her life. One fateful day during a visit to the Ponyville hospital, Applejack is given news that will rock her world forever.

Needing somepony to tell the horrible news to, there's only one pony Applejack trusts this horrible news with. Upon sharing said news, she discovers she and her friend have more in common than she once thought.

While I wrote this story in response to The Last Problem, there are no spoilers in this story. This story has hints of romance but it is mainly a tragedy with some feel good in it. I hope you enjoy. I worked hard on this one.

"Before Twilight and Spike came to Ponyville, they were always a quintet. They all loved and appreciated each other very much, but it felt somewhat outlandish and odd to be returning to their original setup. It was as though a huge part of them had been ripped away within mere moments, and they had to face the fact that life would feel different for quite some time"

During a Wonderbolts exhibition at Mt. Aris, Rainbow Dash accidentally crashes at Sonic Rainboom speeds, nearly killing her. Her recovery is slow and painful, grounding her for months. While land-locked, she learns to appreciate life from the new perspective, as well as the pony caring for her.

At the same time, Applejack watches others form families of their own and starts to wonder if she’ll ever get a special-somepony for herself, or if she’ll end up alone. But she doesn't get any time to ponder that before she's suddenly thrust into a caretaker role for a badly wounded Pegasus...

It's a quiet day like any other at the Apple Family homestead until an incensed Applejack storms into the kitchen. Rainbow Dash has finally told her something which she was not ready to hear and her response leaves her siblings shocked into silence. A resolute Rainbow Dash must dig in and stand strong to face her best friend and fight to drag the real truth out, for both their sakes.

Applejack’s birthday is coming up. She can tell by her calendar. She can tell by the bitter chill in the morning air that brings a slight ache in her bad knee. And she can tell by her marefriend’s shifty behaviour. Every year was the same: Rainbow Dash would poke and prod, in her cute and not-so-subtle way, trying to weedle information out of her, and Applejack, in turn, would drop hints about what she wanted that year. It was a game they played, one that Applejack gladly participated in, just to see that happy grin on her marefriend’s face as she opened her present and told her it was just what she wanted.

Except this year is different. This year, Rainbow isn’t poking and prodding, she’s acting smug and aloof. Like she knows something Applejack doesn’t. There’s an excited energy about her, one she hasn’t had in a long time, not since she made Captain of the Wonderbolts.

No, this year, something is very different. A difference that’s confirmed when Applejack finds a box on her doorstep one morning. A box addressed to her. From Rainbow. It contains a riddle. The first of many. And she has only six days to solve them all.

Well, Applejack was never one to back down from a challenge.
