This story is a sequel to And Hell Followed

A plague ravaged Equestria, turning all of the unicorns and alicorns into bloodthirsty monsters bent on killing all the other races in a genocidal rage. A small cadre lead by the Elements of Harmony survived and persisted in Ponyville, and even managed to reverse it all at the cost of their lives.

Now Equestria must rebuild.

In Manehattan, Twilight Sparkle and Princess Luna must find a way to ease racial tensions while keeping the teetering nation safe and also rebuilding the lost trust of the little ponies of Equestria. Elsewhere, Cheerilee and Scootaloo must find their way in this new world.

There are only two options left. Rebuild Equestria stronger than ever, or be scattered to the winds of history.

After all, as long as she remembers them, they'll always be with her. And she has a very good memory, so it's like her friends are still there with her.

Still, Celestia does her best to offer a compassionate ear, just in case. It's just... what is that sound?

Twilight was never comfortable with the decision made on that day. After a decade of cleaning up the messes her predecessors had left behind, she couldn't in good conscience leave another behind for whoever followed in her hoofsteps.

Written for the Thousand Words Contest II in the Horror category because sometimes you just gotta.

“We’re coming up behind you, Clipper. Seven clicks. White Peak reports the Cape Hornwell radio beacon’s broke. We’re radar only.”

“Celestia, what a time for them to be napping. You’ll have to guide us in, Baron. Our radar went down after that last wave. List is at ten degrees and hatch three is off its hinges.”

“We got you, Clipper. Just hold tight.”

“We’re trying. Gale Clipper out.”

Mission Report:

—Squad has arrived in kirin village.

—Have confirmed the body mentioned in the communique to be the remains of Ranger Flintlock of the Royal Guard, though it's undergone rapid decomposition in the three days since its discovery and is nearly unrecognizable. May be impossible to have transported back to Canterlot intact in its current state.

—The earth pony male mentioned to have been found with the body, confirmed as being Professor Green, had disappeared the previous night when most of the locals had turned in. The remaining two members of the expedition—Trace Findings and Doctor Stratum—remain unaccounted for.

—A stack of freshly-written papers was found in the room where the professor was kept for recuperation. Frantically written and smeared in places, but legible enough for our scribe to have transcribed onto the document attached to this scroll.

—Be forewarned: some of its contents are disturbing.
