Fic recs, April 22nd: Jordan179 edition

Once again, though a good bit late, I bring it upon myself to memorialize an author via reviews of their stories. Though this time, it's different, as I had no connection to Jordan179 and only learned of his passing (three years ago this month, coincidentally), from this post

Another post about video games and Youtube and stuff

If I'm going to waste time watching shit on Youtube, the least I can do is tell people about it. :P

Ceave is a crazy Austrian with a love of video games and a head for philosophizing about them. Plus he really, really hates coins, no matter how tasty they may look.

Do you like video games? How about philosophy?

I like one of those things for sure, but no one combines the two better than a Youtuber named InfernalRamblings, a former professional game developer who now creates hour and a half long video essays about the meanings of video games and how they relate to the world today. Here's a few highlights, since this is now basically my only

Movie good.

Review if you care.

Full spoilers therein. :B

A fun review: I hope the movie incorporates as much humor as I found there.

I've not seen the movie yet but can confirm from fanart, Izzy is best horse.

That pony sure does love beans.

re: DDR
Look, if Hasbro really wants to buy Konami, God bless 'em. Maybe they'll bring some semblance of sanity to that shitshow.

I've not seen it yet (since I let my Netflix expire and don't plan to renew because reasons), but it sounds like it'll be fun when I finally get around to watching it. I had something from near the end spoiled, which has left me somewhat concerned that they're going to introduce something that should be a little more earned too early. But, I'll reserve my judgement till I can actually see the product in question.

Watched it Love it looking forward to a TV series

I liked it. Fun overall.

Loved it! :pinkiehappy:

It was great.

Also yesterday was the thirtieth anniversary of Nevermind, which makes the Smells Like Teen Spirit riff even more astounding. If they timed that on purpose then that's wild.

Izzy is related to Pinkie and Twilight and no amount of arguing will convince me otherwise. She’s also best pony.

Evil Rarity is second best pony. Making Sprout somehow sort of second best pony? Weird times, these.

SunnyMooglow is a thing happening in my head now. Of course, Sunny’s house got demolished, so I guess she’ll have no choice but to move in with Izzy.

Tiktok princess was about what I feared. She didn’t have enough… agency-time to learn a ton about her. Twidash was a good horse. Want to see more of her.

Sherif Himbo doesn’t seem like quite as much of an extra as Spike was. Neat. The part where his childhood friend had to convince him to sit with the group of mares was funny. And the kinda flirting with Pipp was nice. They say people are terribly at recognizing that though.

It’s nice to have the movie confirm that earth horse magic is non existent and that theybe internalized that fact to a degree that Sunny didn’t even think about it at first. Also, what the fuck does she have the memory stone? How is it intact? Why is it on the wall? Sunny has to be Sunsets great granddaughter. She made princess, so Sunnybuns ghost can rest in peace now.

It would explain a lot if this was “connected to FIM” because Luster messed up a spell and everyone in the human world got turned into a horse. Solves the whole “where are celestia and Luna”, “where’s the giant hillside marble city,” and “where are all the non ponies” questions I’ve seen tossed around. I do wonder how day/night works without magic though.

All I really want from this at the moment is about 400x more Izzyscout stories though. Well that and more than 2 hours of sleep.

This is the kind of movie or show or what have you where the flaws just don’t affect the watching experience.

Well, not unless you’re sitting there, analyzing it in real time. Like me. Don’t be like me, kids.

Go on. Analyze the shit out of it. You know you want to.

The humor was surprisingly good. Like I said, a few jokes came off as corporate mandates, but even those were funny on some level.

5586722
Oh, it's far too late for that.

5586818
Snizzy a good ship.

Also, the Queen totally made it with Beef McDancehorse, he is PZipp's new dad.

To be perfectly honest, I do not think that sitting down to pick apart this movie via analysis is the correct way to engage with it. It won't serve anyone at all.

Gonna be completely honest and probably gonna get my asshole torn in half for this but fuck it here goes.

Nothing about this new generation seems very inspired or interesting to say the least. It comes off as kinda...whats the best and least offensive way to put this....forced? Not soulless cashgrab pre say but it kinda comes off that way. Like I get it they wanna do something different but riding the coattails of the last generation seems like a cheap move to me especially with how it seems the 'plot' of this seems to go.

I have not seen to and don't plan to but based on what I have seen and heard so far? Yeah this isn't gonna be for me sadly. There are too many questions and likely none of the answers would satisfy me as a fan of G4. The designs also do nothing for me and each of the main characters is basically just a mash up of the mane 6 into different characters with the only dude pony looking like he's gonna end up being a bit of a douche like character given this series track record but I could be wrong...likely I wont be.

Like I have to wonder how in the actual Hell did the world change so much to the point where pony kind is basically reverted back into the age before harmony was established. How or why would Princess Twilight have failed to where shit would get that bad. Where is Discord? Celestia? Luna? Cadence? Flurry? Do the elements of harmony actually exist still? What about Spike and the dragons? The crystal empire? So...many...questions. Oh and of course the biggest one...WHAT HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN WORLD AND MY WAIFU SUNSET T_T

So yeah as you can tell? This new generation hasn't inspired any hope in me but aye if you enjoy it? All the more power to you. I don't intend to be on the ride for this one. It was fun but G4 is officially dead and buried now. :pinkiesad2:

This. Ever since I first saw the thing almost a day ago (literally - I started watching it 23 hours and 39 mins ago when this comment is posted), my brain has been trying to write words on what I think, and thus far, I have proven unable to drag it away from said analysis direction. I do not like reading those words, I haven't been able to phrase them as I want. No one else would like them, that's a certainty. Yet my attempts to engage with this movie in non-analysis mode, the way everybody else seem to have, have been a non-starter so far. I don't know what to do here, I really don't.

Unless we're talking everything to do with the animation, visuals, and all that! :pinkiehappy: Being Irish animated, I obviously have personal stakes there, what with rooting for the home troops, and have plenty to say there. Largely positive things too - almost all the things I didn't like were design choices, not technical animation aspects. Though the constant motion blur meant the ponies' coats never looked as detailed and immaculate as they did in the still models we've seen. That was a mild irritant.
And those lip close-ups, yeah… they were something!. :rainbowderp:

I've been seeing a lot of comments like this, and I...

I really think you're missing the point. We should not be expecting answers to questions like this. And in fact, people asking questions like this was why I was concerned that G5 would have any links to G4 whatsoever.

This is not "Friendship Is Magic, part 2." This is not a continuation of G4, despite the references in it. This is a new generation, a new remix of a continuing property.

My Little Pony Tales did not explain why ponies suddenly lived in modern times and had mitten hooves

G3 did not explain why ponies no longer lived in modern times.

G4 did not explain why ponies were no longer annoying babies were, y'know, intelligent creatures once again.

Sorry for singling you out here, but to ask for strong continuity between generations is, I believe, to fully miss the point of what an IP generation is, at least in Hasbro terms.

5586897
and yet this entire 5th generation seems to be literally just riding the coattails of the last generation by loosely elluding to continuity. For someone like me if I see things that suggest Twilight and the others used to exist but now don't? It's gonna lead me to wonder all these things. I get this is supposed to be something new but frankly it doesn't feel enough like anything of its own.

I really think you're missing the point. We should not be expecting answers to questions like this. And in fact, people asking questions like this was why I was concerned that G5 would have any links to G4 whatsoever.

Except it is linked, starting here and working forwards in time:

“With the movie, we started development and made the decision to expand the world of My Little Pony, rather than starting from scratch with a total brand reinvention,” Thompson says. “We found ourselves with this whole decade of storytelling and really rich lore, and it felt wrong to walk away from all of that.”

I'm sorry if this is beating a dead... tree, and all, but blame the G5 announcements et al for this one. When they explicitly make something a followup to a pre-existing property instead of an actual complete reboot, they can't cry foul if people follow up on that detail. That's practically begging for an own goal.

Continuity does not matter. Plot holes do not matter. Advertising is always deceptive and don't take that out on storytellers.

Just let people tell stories.

The movie was a good time.

While the basic gist was usual CGI children's movie fare, the way they got there was pretty entertaining and, uh...

You know what wasn't usual? Tackling racism in a step above the usual 90's PSA 'racism is bad, kids' kind of way. An incompetent and aggressive demagogue elevated by business and defense interests. Derogatory racist cartoons and propaganda. Leaders maintaining a willful lie to control a populace.

Pipp was the 5th wheel, but whatever, they had a story to tell and 90 minutes to do it in.

The whole thing was well-executed and felt a lot more poignant than one might expect.

And my god Sunny is cute.

So yeah. Today is the day the MLP fandom moved kicking and screaming into Pony: Generation Five. And I, for one, welcome our squishy-cheeked overlords.

Brilliant closer, my dude. Agree, disagree... it was a review, but you got a good laugh at the end.

And yeah, the movie wasn't the be-all, end-all of pony across the generations. I say that's a good thing. We don't want it to solve everything all at once; we want it to be a good continuation of the journey, while also providing further paths forward.

5586921
And far better than G4's attempts, where they had their cast do racism while intending to do antiracism.

I loved the movie. I actually feel like I need to watch it again to see if there’s anymore connections or theories I can come up with.

I haven’t seen anyone else touch on this, so I need to know if this controversial thought is just me being nutty or not:

I think Hitch is inverted Fluttershy.

Hear me out:

- Is the Earth Pony Fluttershy was supposed to be.
- Is incredibly confident and assertive outwardly, but becomes shy and unsure around those he’s close with or is in danger of becoming close with.
- Has animal magnetism, but doesn’t embrace it outright.

I dunno. Maybe just me.

Anywho, there’s a ton for us to work with here, methinks.

Good review, man. I'm glad to see some tepid, but overall positive optimism for G5. You echo a lot of my feelings about the film as well, and I might put up some thoughts of my own in between, well... all the other stuff I've been meaning to do and putting off.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I would almost contend that that's brony baiting. Thematically, there's continuity, but anything else? Either they dialled it back or overhyped the connections. I'm sure the show (I guess it will be a show?) will tell us more.

5587143
yeah obviously hitch had a ton of Fluttershy bait woven into him hopefully we'll see more of that in future episodes

5586818
generic sleeping pills from CVS have been a game-changer for me for the better. Especially since I'm pretty hopped up on stimulants most of the time, it helps me to get a good night sleep

5586921
right? I know it's a lazy comparison but I can't help but feel a little bit of trumpism in the whole cult of personality around a exceedingly mediocre narcissist with dreams of power

Izzy was best pony in fanon from day 1, so I was desperately hoping she was best pony in canon and then the movie came out and she actually was and every moment she was on screen was a joy and I am still firmly in camp Izzy.

And yeah, the villain twist was great. The trailers had me convinced Queen Haven was the villain because we saw the pegasi "flying" in the trailer which had me convinced she'd hoarded all the magic to only their race and was therefore evil. I was excited that turned out to be wrong.

To answer one of your questions, I understand the plan at the moment is for Netflix to show a series of episodes followed by a special. However, this appears to have done better than expected, both critically and commercially - as well as a slate of positive reviews, it's topped Netflix' Kids section charts pretty much worldwide and is currently sitting in most countries' overall Top 10 charts - so whether that has any bearing on future Pony remains to be seen.

oh my god, yes, if this movie did anything right, it was Izzy living up to the hype :D
