"Ponyfic: There Can Be Only One" wrap-up [Royal Canterlot Library]

We're still recovering this week from the fandom's final Bronycon.  (In some cases literally — a con-crud-ridden Horizon is dragging himself out of bed to write this.)  So in lieu of a Bronycon-week feature, we'd like to talk a little bit about the panel we hosted to find THE FANDOM'S BEST FANFIC™.

We've got a full writeup on our royalcanterlotlibrary.net website — including the complete bracket of 16 fics in contention for the title; shout-outs to great fics which we couldn't fit on the shortlist; and the full results of audience and curator voting.

Our hearty congratulations to Monochromatic's "The Enchanted Library" for taking the BEST FANFIC title in an upset victory over our #1 seed!  We'll be running an interview with Monochromatic as soon as possible.

    MLP BOX T-Shirt Contest

Hey guys, MLP BOX are doing a competition for a t-shirt design to be included in one of their boxes, and since I know we have a mix of people here including artists, we thought it'd be a good idea to promote them so you guys can get in on it too. Below you can find more information about the contest:

Brony.com and MLP BOX have launched the first in a series of "Design a MLP T-shirt" contests over on Brony.com.  The winning design, voted on by site visitors,  will not only be featured on a shirt but the winning designer will also win $1000 dollars pending approval of their design by Hasbro.   Second and Third Place will also receive a cash prize.  All winning designs will be printed and be made available in t-shirt form for sale through the Brony website.

    Patreon & Survey Follow Up

First of all, reminder that we have a Patreon you can find at https://www.fimfiction.net/patreon . Apparently a lot of people didn't know we had one so there it is. $5 will remove ads on the site for you. I'll be making the Patreon page more prominent in relevant areas of the site soon to make sure people actually know it exists.

Thanks everyone for filling in the survey last night. We had over 5,000 responses and I did in fact read every single comment left as they were coming in and finished reading them this morning. It seems there are a few features which we would potentially be interested in making premium features (part of the $5+ patreon rewards).

    • Custom emoticons you can upload
    • Custom titles / colours
    • Animated avatars
    • Avatar border frames
    • Extra themes
    • Custom CSS
    • Higher tier patreon rewards that let you “gift” premium?
    • Mass story download
    • Banners
    • Automatic day/night theme selector
    • Free advertising slots?

    Merry Christmas

Hope you all have a great day, wherever you are and however you celebrate Christmas / the holiday season in general!

I was working on a cool 3d project for the site but unfortunately I never really had time to turn it into something useful. Have a screenshot anyway!

    Regarding leaked content

Since there has been some confusion on the site message I somewhat hastily put up, I thought I'd post a blog post to explain things a bit better.

As most of you probably know by now, yesterday a lot of confidential information regarding future episodes, seasons, generations, emails, etc was pulled from an FTP server. As with leaked episodes (and in fact, episodes in general or other links to copyrighted content) our policy is to not permit it to be posted. Discussion of the content, however, is acceptable. Infringement of these rules will be dealt with the same way we've dealt with posting of leaked episodes in the past.

AShadowOfCygnus' "Cold Light" [Royal Canterlot Library]

Today's story might offer up some cold comfort.

    Cold Light
[Dark] [Human] [Sad] • 3,209 words
[Note: This story contains sexual themes.]

Even in our darkest moments, the stars shine coldly down — distant and remote, but bright in the blackness. Refuse them, shut them out, and they remain. Let them in, and they may convince you of the warmth in their embrace.

This is not a story about stars.

This is a story about people and ponies, and what they visit on each other in moments of darkness.

Site Post » Come See Us at Bronycon! [Royal Canterlot Library] · 3:25pm August 2nd

The run-up to Bronycon has been a mad whirlwind of RCL activity!  Five curators are attending (two for the first time!), and one of us is an official community guest. Several of us are participating in the Golden Oaks Bookstore (as author, author and publisher).  And we're even running a panel!

Come join the Royal Canterlot Library in the Hall of the Moon from 11:15 AM-12:15 PM Saturday, Aug. 3 for "Ponyfic: There Can Be Only One"! We've selected 16 stories from among the fandom's best of the best — a combination of curators' favorites and crowd favorites from our community voting — and are going to introduce them to our audience and pit them against each other in a voting bracket to discover MLP'S BEST FANFIC™.  (It's all in good fun; there's no way to be objective about a task this big, but it's an excuse to talk about some really awesome stories.)  Join us and help us determine which author takes home the bragging rights!

Here's a sneak preview of our bracket — half of our sixteen contenders:

Eakin's "Hard Reset"
shortskirtsandexplosions' "Background Pony"
Monochromatic's "The Enchanted Library"
Horse Voice's "The Writing on the Wall"
Dromicosuchus's "Mendacity"
GaPJaxie's "Around the World in 81 Days (And Other Problems Caused by Leap Years)"
PatchworkPoltergeist's "The Silver Standard"
GhostOfHeraclitus' "Whom the Princesses Would Destroy…"

Look forward to seeing you there!

And the last thing anyone heard as the remnants of the panel were dragged away was “You don’t understand! We thought the deaths would top out at fifteen!”

What, no Fallout Equestria.:rainbowhuh: I can say Objectively that its best because it brought us best gun horse

Or more to the point, my fics? Clearly my still needs to be finished brilliance has been slighted:trixieshiftleft:

Or our version of 1984 Two Minute of Hate where we begining sobbing and asking ourselves why are we here and why are we doing this before we go back to arguing about who best embodies the term waifu and arguing about best pony tribe (which is stupid, because that battle was settled the second best aforementioned sub species was revealed.)

Wow, didn't realize the Silver Standard was that good...

Everyone knows The Prisoner of Zebra is best pony.

(That nobody read).

I hugely underestimated the number of books I should have sent. Apparently they sold out within an hour of opening.

I'm pulling for Whom The Princess, personally.

5098178 I think that it would say a lot about us, as a fandom, if we collectively decided that the fanfic which best represented our vision of what an uncynical children's cartoon should be was The Horny Little Murder-Unicorn That Could.

5098290
Oh come now. Fallout Equestria has that rare Berserk quality where, yes, its dark at times, buts its by no means grim dark. And Littlepip is our equivelant of Lenny from Mice and Men, a loveable idiot who, despite her decided fucks ups, we just can't get mad at.

And of course she was horny, she was a narwhal horse, a narse if you will:yay:

Well, that's just my opinion, for what little that's worth. And no, I don't hold Kkat to the Steinback standard, I'm justing making a overblown comparison.

And no, I Berserk and FOE aren't grim dark. When I think grim dark, I think Project Horizons or Dark Eldar.

Casca would probably disagree with you, but yeah. Different strokes, and all that.

5098325
True. And considering Gut's went through pretty much the same trauma, I don't he'd argue the point much either

Fallout Equestria reminds me of the old post WWIII survivor stories from the 1950s
Farnham’s Freehold (Heinlein) &
Star Man’s Son 2250 AD (Norton, a YA)
are the only 2 that I can think of that are still in print (AFAIK)

> author not realizing their own story is popular

Honestly, this is the biggest mood I've ever seen on this site.

Before seeing this, I had read 6 of these & now I’ve read 7 + working on “Mendacity”
Could you post the titles in the other bracket?
That way, I’ll know if I need to go off & brood about The Injustices of The Universe or not
(Depends on if some of my favorites made the cut or not)

All of them are good, but IDK if I’d call some of them “Best”

Posh #18 · 1 week ago · · ·

5099372 Especially when The Spiderses is objectively the greatest work of fiction this fandom has ever produced, bar none.

5099460
Well, I’ve downloaded it & will read it -someday.
(I’ve only got about 900 stories ahead of it, + some incompletes that I’m following)
I will say that it’s got a LOT of downvotes for “Best”
IMO, this is the best Big Mac story

TThe New Crop
With the Apple family deep in debt, Big Mac climbs into the ring once again to save the farm. Now all that’s between him and the two-thousand-bit winner’s purse is some unicorn named Blueblood. Things are about to get ugly.

This guy gets it.

they locked me out because the room was full. which one won?

5100453
The Enchanted Library. I believe the runners-up were Hard Reset, The Best Night Ever, and Keepers of Discord. I had never heard of it before, but it must be good to beat such stiff competition.

5100549
It's been on my read later list for a while, and was also in my Never Ending Stories group for a while. It's quite long.

How did Hard Reset not win?! I mean they made a freakin' movie from it with Tom Cruise! :flutterrage:

...wait. I may have just answered my own question. :raritycry:

*goes and re-reads Hard Reset and salutes Monochromatic for her win*

I think this was one of the things I wanted to catch at Bronycon. But, because of ridiculously long lines, I missed it (and a lot of other things).
