Shin Gojira/Godzilla:Resurgence Trailer · 9:47pm Apr 13th, 2016

Well, we got our first clear as day, in motion, presumably finished look at the new Godzilla. Noticing a lot of repeat actors in the quick frames so that is either proof of Toho having a limited roster, or we're going to get some intentional mythology gags. I'll be thinking over my assessment due to time constraints, but audience, what's your diagnosis on the film so far?

Considering what comes in part 2 of the Fools special, I called something

Godzilla looks scary as fuck.

Geez, this Godzilla could give a 5 year old nightmares! I'd rather stick with the 2014 Godzilla!

It looks like Burning Godzilla. Could they be introducing some sort of continuation/reboot? Like Jr. goes out like his old man and a new Godzilla rises? Or an old one? Man that would be scary. The first Godzilla gets revived!

Dunno about his new look. The design looks okay for Godzilla, but the whole 'muscle lines' is distracting and looks like they're trying to make him MORE intimidating. Japan, he's Godzilla. He doesn't need to look more intimidating then he already is. What, are they suggesting that this Godzilla is a zombie?.......With a title Resurgence reminds me of Resident Evil........

:rainbowderp:
Oh my stars, the Umbrella Corporation has resurrected the original Godzilla. They've gone too far this time.

I'm sorry I just can't take those chicken leg arms seriously, I mean it just sucks all the terror out of him.

Personally, I think it'll probably be a call back to Gojira or something. Also, I said it before, I'll say it again: He looks like a walking pile of scar tissue covered in old scabs.
And I love it
Hopes to it being a good movie!

I'm reserving final judgement for more thought but yah, similar boat. For everything I like about the suit, there's some other detail that's making my judgement a toss up. I like the sheer size the cinematography provides, but the chicken arms and tiny eyes are distracting.

while it looks better then the leaked photo I still don't like the needle teeth and tiny eyes and the small T-rex arms look silly

Looks like Burning Godzilla came back as a goddamn zombie, makes me wonder if this will continue off of where the 90's series ended. The Deign looks scary as hell, but maybe they're going for a darker mood for the film, and is it just me, or does his tail seem larger than usual? I will say that I liked the camera angles of both Godzilla and the military action scenes. Regardless, I'm pretty excited to see how the film turns out.

I was all holy shit, he's huge. His tail was the size of a building.

3868332 Not sure if I'll go and see it. I'm more of a Mothra fan myself, so I haven't watched a lot of Godzilla movies. {2 or 3} Though I have been trying to find the one with little Jr. being raised by his human mommy.
I so hope they don't give Mothra a new 'gritty' look though.

The red lines look less like exposed muscle and more like he's burning. And not in the 'on fire' way that the, well, Burning Godzilla was back in the Destroyah movie. This looks as if Godzilla is... almost a living lava flow I guess. A contained mass of energy and destruction moving on its own terms. More than that, the way he moves is just wrong. As if he's not supposed to be there. His tail keeps floating about as if it has no mass to it. Like it has its own will or something. He just seems utterly huge as well. Unnaturally so, which his tail just makes worse. This Godzilla isn't a King.
He's a Demon.

That Godzilla looks ugly it's like he got run over be a semi truck multiple time the 2014 Godzilla looks better

Between the volcanic look of his body, the alien, almost unnatural way he moves, and his general vibe, I'm honestly getting a 'Demon straight out of hell' vibe off of Shin-Gojira. Like...He doesn't seem like the Godzilla we know and love. he seems...Evil.

Considering the goal is horror? ...I think they're succeeding, for me at least.

Is anyone else getting a colossal titan/ attack on titan vibe from this version of Godzilla also his tail is just ridiculously long and his arms are ridiculously small. Oh and it looks like their using an older version of his roar. I see red glowing bits and appears to be slow moving even by Godzilla standards, and finally I'm a bit scared and creeped out by this Godzilla. But at the end of the day I will need to see the full movie to make a final judgement about it.

P.S. at 0:15 he looks seriously pissed off and at 1:08 look at that face just giving zero f#@ks about being shot at.

Here's my thoughts on the trailer, I loved seeing the new Godzilla in motion, the special effects used to portray him look fantastic there were moments where I couldn't tell if it was CG or practical. My only complaint is that some scenes in the trailer look a little too much like scenes from the 2014 film, and you probably know which scenes i'm talking about.

I understand people have problem with the eye and arms but you all must understand he's suppose to be a nuclear victim. Have you google what real life nuclear victim look like, they look horrible.

not to mention a lot of fans pointed out that Godzilla 1954 sculpture had both smaller arms and eyes.

I know now a day we are used too seeing a better looking Godzilla but it not about him looking good, it about him being the ugly side of human nature and the being the victim of it. Godzilla was meant to be horribly scar that how the describe him being in the behind the scene of 1954 film. This film design is close to being close to the description they just ab it up abit just like they said they would. They said it would be a nightmarish version of the 1954 design and they meant it.

So far the creator to Shin Gojira/Godzilla Resurgence kept they're words to a tea. The feel of the trailer shows they are going for dark film similar to the original 1954 film and The Return of Godzilla(1984).

That being said I too am not a fan of this creature design but I at least understand what they're going for so I'll respect it.

This.is.not. Godzilla 2014. people. Toho isn't going to able to compete with it. This is their own thing.

There are things I like about the design, but the glowing red in him is kinda distracting.

And what looks like exposed flesh and stuff on the tail is just kinda...odd.

3868443 I especially agree on the last point. Just to be clear, when I make an assessment of the design it won't be a case of me hating on it or bashing. I feel Godzilla as both a character and a franchise has proven to work on a whole scale of looks and tones. This would just be my personal nit picks or comparisons of this designs to those I know work for the tone Toho is shooting for. So for instance I wouldn't be comparing it to say, G'1974, G'1999, G'2014, or G'1989; but rather to other darker installments like G'1984, the original, and so on. It wouldn't be a matter of what's good and what's bad, just what I think works or doesn't work for the design given the style the movie seems to be going for.

It looks really dramatic.

His tail is strikingly long, like distractingly long and floaty.

The production quality is noticeably different from the Heisei/Millennium films, like this is a fan movie put up on youtube. I'm not dissing it, but it just looks different from any Godzilla movie before.

Godzilla himself? Oh jeez. Alright, out the box, I didn't like the squealy roar, just not a fan of it. And at that particular moment, he looks like he's from a video game's cut scene. Other than that, he doesn't really do anything beside stand there as things shoot him. Kinda would have liked him to react to something, anything really. He looks scary, the look they gave him here is disturbing, like's he's crawled out of the epicenter of a nuclear accident.

The music was actually excellent. Very serious, heavy on the strings just like I like it. Reminded me of "Requiem for a Dream" somewhat. immediately after 1st viewing, I'm humming the tune to myself, so it looks like the score will be very well done.

Overall:
I'm ready for a new take on Godzilla to freak me the hell out. And the way this Godzilla looks and moves, certainly seems like he's going to deliver. It seems like the directors have some very interesting shots for us to view the movie from, like the shot that rides the corner of the tank, but I just wish it had some more money for production so it didn't look like a European indie film.
So bring it on Toho, give me something to remember this by.

Weirdly enough, the design actually looked a lot better seeing it in motion. I'm still not a huge fan of it, but I will admit I was wrong on a few points.

I do like how they put this guy into motion, but I feel like it's Toho's attempt to make a 1954 style burning Godzilla. The tail is a long one, so much so that it's almost like a giant snake coming out of Goji.

Creepy as Hell, not bad, though I may have notice that the arms aren't moving at all except the fingers since he seem half dead they're broken, who knows maybe he is still trying to heal and is seeking more Nuclear Radiation to speed it up and be fully Reborn as the True Non-Zombie Godzilla

For one thing we can now assume that the alleged "Zombiezilla" is more than just a prop and is an actual suit.

I for one am actually happy and excited for it. As a lifelong fan of Godzilla, I can say that I'm not just eager for a new Godzilla film , but a return to the dark, even terrifying tone and look of the original. Something that doesn't just hearken back to the original, but tries to match it in tone. As much as I love Godzilla 2014, I must admit that I was hoping he would be more of an actual menace than just an "Alpha predator". He had size, power and sheer presence, but he didn't inspire as much dread as I would have liked. For me, Godzilla is at his best when he actually terrifies others, (Gojira,1984, and GMK are great examples)This new one, by the looks of it, is going in the direction I was hoping it would. Sure the movie could do bad, or it could be great. all we could do is wait and hope for a release in the states that won't be too far behind the release in Japan.

One thing I don't like though, that roar in the beginning sounded too high pitched for me, but I could live with that if they use that one for the film.

3868317 T-Rex for reference.

I get the feeling this Godzilla will be the one who supposedly died in GMK. I mean the still regenerating skin is almost a dead giveaway, no pun intended. If anyone recalls in GMK before the credits roll we see a glimpse of Godzilla's heart still beating. Maybe just maybe it took him 15 years to get back on his feet. Anybody else agree with me? I would love it if they made this a sequel to GMK. It really bothers me when a movie leaves behind a cliffhanger and the producers/director don't make a sequel to follow it up like Eragon or The Last Airbender just to name a few though those two in particular will need to be redone from the ground up anyway.

The new design I'm not a big fan of but in certain shots he does like a bamf.
Overall though the movie looks pretty cool and may be going back to the showa age of Godzilla.
Also I heard one rumor going around that Godzilla may evolve in the movie to a new stronger form. So that may explain the glowing skin. Or Toho decided to give Godzilla a new attack.

Im glad the actual look is better than in the Image teaser you showed last time, you really dont notice the kinda human looks.

The long tail looks weird overall, but every other had its own thing.

althought most dont seem to like the Undead Glow, i kinda like it, gives of as if he is either diyng or healing, maybe the whole plot is him after food.

i really didnt get a horror vibe from it, its more like despair, it seems everything just keeps getting worst as it goes, in my opinion a better option than horror, it just doesnt affect me, makes keep guessing how is gonna go wrong.

3868373
No, not a demon. Something far worse.

Look up the director, and then his most famous work to date.

Look at the way he arranged the military hardware, compared to the way he did in that famous anime series.

Then, take a second look at how this Godzilla looks and moves.

He's no mere Kaiju. He's no demon. He's an Angel.

God help us all.

I NEED IT!
With that being said, this "Zombiezilla" is what I can only think as the REVIVED or STILL-REGENERATING Gojira that laid waste to Japan in 1954... then in 2001 as Ghost Godzilla in GMK, and then came back in the form of Kiryu in 2002/2003 in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla and Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. Overall, I can see that this movie will keep a similar style to the original, dark and horrific. And now that we see his full design in the trailer, I'm sold! But will Shin Gojira/Godzilla: Resurgence live up to our expectations? We'll just have to wait and see.

This... this actually kinda works. I mean, it is a bit of a weird design, but for the tone of horror/disaster that they look to be aiming for this Godzilla looks downright monstrous and unsettling. His lack of actual dramatic movement, even when being hammered by the military, to my eyes makes him look like a unfeeling, uncaring monster that gives no thought to the civilization he's crushing underfoot. He seems less an animal and more a dark force of chilling destruction. The music really emphasize this feeling as well, even making what seem to be boring scenes of people standing around meeting rooms seem dramatic.

I'd say I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

I can't get over the size of his tail. It's a monster on its own.

The the atmosphere that this trailer creates, it exudes a sense of hopelessness and futility at the sight of this monstrous creature called "Godzilla", something that on it's outline looks like it came from this world, but it's about as "unearthly" as you can get.

And the show of force by the Japanese army to combat this thing.....we all know what is going to happen, and what it's going to mean.

They're fighting a battle that they don't know they can even win, for what they're fighting is not a creature, but a force, an agency.

They're not fighting an animal.....they're not even fighting a "Monster"......what they're fighting......is an Abomination......

OH MY GOSH!!! IT'S a zombie GODZILLA!!!! He's going to hunt down all the other monsters and eat their brains!!! No wonder he looks messed up.

I think he does look better here than the images we've seen, but something.... Is off about him. I think it's the arms for me,but I can't quite place what it is. His tail is HUGE like it should be a monster itself. I so like how big they make him look with the shots we see here. He looks like a towering force full of power and destruction that can't be stop. Which I think works well for godzilla.

Overall I'm hopeful that this will be a good movie and think that it definitely has the potential to be good.

After seeing the the new Godzilla in motion, I'm actually so hyped. One thing that confused me and also a friend (Non brony but a kaiju fan) was confused to tell weather they used CGI or a rubber suit. Only issue is just the arms being too short but overall (Not official) this version of Godzilla is one of my top 10 favorite incarnation.

The suit reminds me a lot of the one used in godzilla raids again.
Also his tail never hits the ground in this trailer. I think.
And man can Toho keep a suit looking good in this day and age it looks better then most CGI effects.

I don't know about this godzilla look it seem to.......burn, like this godzilla looks like he a fucking burn victim. I don't know if that what they were going for I would have taken that in a different route, the head shape and the eyes look just goofy on him. That first part with the head shot just does not look right, plus this is like the only thing that really bugs me is his tail. It's just so fucking huge it's bigger then his own body there is like no balance between godzilla own body and this giant tail that looks like his could wrap it around his neck.

3868843 You're right, that's FAR worse.
Quick, someone call up Kiryu! It's the closest thing we have to an Evangelion in the Tohoverse!

Is it me, or is that Shiro Sagisu doing the soundtrack? Cause if so, than that's just great. :D

Hey is it just me or do Godzilla's spines look like their twitching at the end of the trailer its very brief but I could swear that they were moving while Godzilla himself is standing still.

The only part of the design I'm worried about now is the arms. They seem too small.

On the subject of the people in the trailer, to answer your question... these movies always have a "human story" that runs in parallel to the "Kaiju story", so those characters are likely the main characters of said "human side" of the movie; likely in Japan they are themselves box office draws, hence their prominence in the trailer.

On the subject of the arms in the trailer... I don't think they look any smaller, in comparison to the rest of the body, then the arms from the original movie's monster. Remember, as the series progressed, Godzilla increasingly was fighting other monsters, so larger arms in later suits were a must.

That tail acts like no tail ever found on a terrestrial vertebrate; in fact my first thought seeing it was that it acted like a tentacle of a marine invertebrate more then any thing else.

As I mentioned earlier, the parallels to NGE are there if you look for them, likely due to directorial style more then anything else.

Otherwise, my thoughts on Godzeruel... yeah, that about covers it.

I expect this movie to be awesome. It better be awesome. It's delaying the completion of the Rebuild of Evangelion; nothing less then awesome would justify such a crime.

I just hope the conclusion doesn't require a ticked off 14 year old.

EVILZILLA IS BACK!

Throw him some lotion! I've never seen skin so dry before!

3868843 Well if you go with the title "shin"have some means "True" "New" "Advance" some as mean "God" if we go "Shinto". Funny how it have the first four letter to shinji the main character from "Evangelion" name.
3870859
I agree that it have some "Neon Genesis Evangelion (NGE)" Reference and some connection. But angel I would totally say that if you compare some of this Godzilla. It made be close to Evangelion unit 01 Psudeo Awaken mode and Evangelion unit 02 Beast mode in "Rebuild Of Evangelion 2.0:You can(Not) Advance".

here the photo to compare to

Both Shin Godzilla and Evangelion unit 01 Psuedo Awaken mode have a glowing red aura around their body.

Actually, I chose Zeruel in part for spelling reasons, but mostly because the Angel of God's Might had a better fit for the apparent role Godzilla shows in this trailer: an unstoppable, uncaring monstrosity that can walk through everything man can throw at it, atomic weapons included. I know this is true of all the Angels to a degree, but this one was the mightiest of them all.

3871003 Godzilla has never been evil. He's a force of nature. The wrathful side for sure but he was never outright EVIL.

3964617 Just clarifying. He was canonically 'Pure Evil' as according to the director and scriptwriters of GMK. All other times he's somewhere between good and a vengeful neutral.

3964636 Well in that one he was also taken over by the spirits of dead soldiers from WWII.
