The Day of the Dead Anthology

The Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a now-famous tradition from ancient times that has been a huge part of Mexican Culture through the centuries. Like so many things in Mexico, it's influenced strongly by certain aspects of the Aztec people.

It has shaped the way those of us with that heritage look at life and death in many ways, and most importantly on the remembrance of, and honoring the deceased. We traditionally decorate little altars dedicated to the memories of those that passed away… but it's not a somber occasion.

PSA: Using AIs to Write and Publish Stories in Fimfiction

Hello everyone, this is a PSA (Public Service Announcement, for those of ESL) to put to rest consistent questions about using AI to 'write' stories and publish them here. This is not intended as a poll or a request for feedback. It is exclusively a clarification on an already-existing rule.

People ask: "Can I, oh great and powerful D, post a story or chapter that I got ChatGPT to write for me?!"

And the answer, my friend, is... No.

Absolutely not. Not in a thousand years!

    Because you didn't write it.

It is not your creation. You are NOT the author. In fact, you are the opposite.

There seems to be some confusion when interpreting the following rule:

    Don’t Post (Content)

    Phishing Awareness

Have you ever found yourself in a situation like this?

And then you magically find yourself in a suspiciously familiar site, except that you're not logged in, and it requires you to do so?

Well. Don't log in. This is a scam, and a cheap one at that.

There've been recent attempts to obtain Fimfiction users’ personal data, like passwords and/or emails through links like the one I'm making fun of above. And a distressing amount of people don't seem to know what phishing attempts are.

If you HAVE entered a site like this and put in your data, make sure to follow these basic steps at least.

All Our Best [Royal Canterlot Library]

As should be obvious from 15 months without a feature, life has taken the Royal Canterlot Library curators in different directions. While there’s still plenty of awesome stories being written in the My Little Pony fandom, we’re no longer actively working to spotlight them, and it’s time to officially draw the project to a close.

Thank you for all of your support, suggestions, and comments over the years. We’re grateful to have been able to share seven years of exemplary stories with you, and give more insight into the minds behind them. In the spirit of the project, please keep reading and recommending fantastic fics to friends—the community is enriched when we all share what we love.

    Reunions: A Swapped Roles Contest!

Okay guys here's something fun presented by Nitro Indigo.

Presented by me, I guess, but I digress.

Last year, I (Nitro Indigo) noticed that there was a surprising lack of roleswap fanfics on this site. To fix that, I decided to run a roleswap contest over the summer themed around secrets. While it didn’t get many entries, it nevertheless attracted the attention of some big authors and was the origin of two of my favourite fics. Overall, I think it was a success, so I’ve decided to run another one!

    Minor Rules and Reporting Update

Hope everyone is enjoying the new year.

Some small changes have been made to our rules as well as to the reporting process.

    Rules

"No attacks directed at individuals or groups due to race, gender, gender identity, religion or sexual identity."

This better clarifies our previously ill-defined hate speech rule and includes groups as well as individual attacks.

"No celebration, glorification or encouragement of real life criminal activity."

This includes past, present and potential future crimes.

    Jinglemas 2019

There's truly no time like the holidays. What's better than copious amounts of food, quality time with family and friends, hearing the sweet sound of Trans-Siberian Orchestra on repeat, and unmanagble financial stress from our capitalist overlords?

    Gift exchanges of course!

Site Post » Update Batch #3 · 12:56am Dec 16th, 2013

Unfortunately there isn't a ton of interesting things this time, because most of the changes have been on the back end where there have been some serious changes to things. We now only serve 1 pre-zipped css file and 1 js file which gets rid of a ton of requests, is far smaller, and caches better. This should mean the site is quite a decent bit faster.

Mobile
The mobile site is now toggleable. Hooray! If you force your phone browser to request desktop site you'll now get a 1000px wide version of the site which is what you'd see on a desktop. There were some issues with this after launch but it should work now. Snow is also disabled on mobiles period.

Edit: Changed this now so it only changes the viewport which means the site is scalable below 1000px again

Chapter progress bar
Added an option to turn this off in the settings

BBCode pop ups
I've made a neat little generic javascript pop up thing for all the menus in the bbcode toolbar now. You'll have seen the basis of them already with colours/sizes but now you can move them around and such, and adding images and links is a lot nicer and validates the input too (which should hopefully stop people trying to embed funnyjunk and imgur pages as images....)

Group pages
Did some minor clean up work on these

Banners
Finally remade every banner on the site to remove the logo so we can add our new one.

Nav bar icons
Updated the PM/Feed/Notification icons to match the rest of the site

I didn't even notice the new logo.:twilightblush:

i don't like update:ajsleepy:

Hey Knighty, this Zebra picture still has the old logo behind the new one on the header. You might want to check that

Why did you get rid of the bird banner? :fluttershysad:

lovin the updates! Site keeps improving! Good work!

Oops I forgot that one. I meant to remove it actually as I don't think it works super well as a banner.

The format for replying, editing, and deleting comments is currently....Words fail me, but the fact that I have to refresh the page to reply to a comment is annoying. Can we have the buttons stay there instead of fading?

Thank you for the full desktop site on phones!

Hey, knighty. I seem to be having trouble using images now. I try to link imgur images like I always did, but it gives me an "invalid image" error. Is there any way to resolve this, or is it simply a bug?

If you're getting a double logo issue, please try clearing your browser cache, there seems to be some sort of caching issue in certain browsers.

1612087 Cool. No worries. Keep up the good work. I like the new look, and if it makes the site faster, that's great!

I enjoy the new logo.

That is all I have to say. :moustache:

There is two bugs on the desktop for phones. Using Chrome on my Galaxy S3. The site does not display in the entire screen, instead it renders everything over to the right, leaving a big gap instead of centering it. Also the snow is on.

Does clicking/tapping on the comment make the buttons show up? If not, what browser/device?

Comment posted by Lorthalis of Crows deleted Dec 16th, 2013

Nevermind the site fixed its self.

The mobile site is now toggleable.

Where? I can't find the option anywhere.

1612102
Safari. Occasionally, I'll have to reload the page. And yes, I've tried. It works sometimes, but not always.

The new message board symbol makes me think of Earthbound. I approve.

1612087
Was removing the Philomena one intentional, too? 'Cos that one was my favourite.

Chapter scrubber
Added an option to turn this off in the settings

Mind explaining that in greater detail? What even is the Chapter Scrubber? :rainbowhuh:

Nobody's complaining yet! Don't worry, I'll fix this!

*clears throat*

Fimfiction is worst site ever and Knighty is evil dictator who pockets site money because he has totally NO right to make money off his own site! So I'm mad about this sidha odhOKHFEOHFE O. I'm going to go make my own super popular, managed, populated fanfiction site and steal all Knighty's money!

( In real notes. The change in icons is interesting to say the least. I now have a bell and a world to click on instead of what there was prior. Also, the change in banner logo is a somewhat nice change actually.)

The fuck is a scrubber? Is this some British silliness? (obviously the progress bar, but still :rainbowlaugh:)

Safari? On what, an iPhone? iPad? Mac? windows desktop?

1612119
The mobile browser has to have a "view desktop site" option in the (browser) menus.

1612128
I agree with the fruit. The Philomena banner was pretty awesome.

1612087
I take it you removed the Philomena banner due to a similar feeling? I'll just note that I and a number of folks I know used that one religiously, so we're definitely missing it. Any chance of getting it back?

Hurrah for updates! :pinkiehappy:

1612091 Woah... So you do comment! :pinkiegasp:

YOU'VE RUINED IT FOREVER!

I HOPE YOU'RE HAPPY!!!!

1612141
Mac. Haven't tried it on other devices yet.

Not the Philomena banner! That was my favorite "stealth ponies" banner.

1612159 Down at the bottom of every page isn't easy to find?

1612141
Is it possible to just allow a global toggle? I frequently have my browser resized under 1000 width when I have multiple things open on my laptop. Now it just puts in a scrollbar instead of squishing the layout to make things fit.

All I want to know is what happened to the Philomena banner. :pinkiegasp:

THANK YOU BASED KNIGHTY

Knighty is love.
Knighty is life.

1612141 I cannot find the mobile desktop option.

Yaay, finally, prezipped text files. :rainbowlaugh:

Blast you Unisys. :twilightangry2:

There are 4 types of data, static static to dynamic dynamic. If you take it that dial up modems apply compression to speed up data transfer, then doing teh same for more than a given amount of text, script etc, should improve performance in certain ways.

Im still trying to find out how come zip compresses text to a third the size, but Im sure powerpacker could compress down to a tenth. Mustve been the file types. Oh well.

If you include hash ID for all images, and image size in the script, that improves layout and download as scaling can take place after?

Theres a wavepak style option being proposed, but check your JPEG published standard, it includes thumbnail decimation as a standard option. That is, you have the Most significant factors as a low reas thumbnail block, then the higher factors are stored as an extention block. Wavepack goes one further and stores the difference between the complete lossy Jpeg, and the origional lossless image as a further extention.

Theres all sorts of things about Hilbert curve nD to 1D transformation followed by mega pixel FFT, sigma delta envelopes and Berlkamp Massey polynomial generators for image compression, but Im sure there are patents out there preventing you from applying them.

Dont forget, if the universe is a hologram, holograms are fractal, and fractal compression is vastly higher ratio than Jpeg, and the origional fractal compression patents expired earlier this year.

Now Ill go hide before I get done for talking about tech Im not supposed to. :facehoof:

Thank you for getting rid of the snow on moblies. I can accualy run the site on my phone again! Thanks again!

It's usually in the main menu for your mobile browser, some lower-end mobile browsers might not supported it, but in our testing they also have problems rendering the desktop version properly.

I've made a neat little generic javascript pop up thing for all the menus in the bbcode toolbar now.

Not for the YouTube menu! :trollestia:

It'll take a while to get used to the new buttons, and I'm not sure how a globe icon is supposed to relate to your feed, or a bell to notifications, but whatever.

1612229 Is there a reason, this method is being used instead of just an option in the settings? I'm not the only one who used the mobile version of the website on their non-mobile device.

1612229 Except it doesn't actually seem to work on iPhone.
