Flurry Heart wants to know what happened to the Crystal Empire's previous rulers. Cadance answers with as little detail as possible, and unintentionally teaches her daughter about a tradition she wasn't aware of.

Days before Hearth's Warming, Applejack discovers that the most important tree in the orchard has been struck by mistletoe. Just another problem to add to this holiday, really. She's already been more ornery than usual this Hearth's Warming, so what's one more problem to add to the list?

Twilight's not sure why she's so upset, but she'd like to help her not be.

Luster Dawn, Twilight's most faithful student, is a studious young mare who knows far too much about the afterlife & keeping secrets. Recently, she's uncovered a new secret, a rather dark one that she can't talk about, as speaking of such a secret puts her own life at risk.

Sombra, former tyrannical king of the Crystal Empire, is the King of the Dead, dedicated to saving his subjects from the curse of the afterlife. Under his rule, they are not allowed to reveal themselves to the living, though he has made an exception for Luster. Unfortunately, this has put both her and others in danger.

Twilight Sparkle, Princess of Equestria, is unaware of these secrets, the dead within her castle, or her student's meddling in their afterlives. Surely, these secrets can't last forever? Especially when it begins to threaten the ones she cares about?

Long ago, in the dead of night, Luster Dawn saw a dark figure in Canterlot Castle's throne room. Longer still before that, Princess Twilight Sparkle and her friends defeated one of Equestria's greatest enemies in that same room.

Now, Luster Dawn wishes to disprove the existence of ghosts and allay her illogical fears of the castle being haunted, but a lingering presence is about to teach her something far more important.

It's been a week since anyone in Sire's Hollow has seen Firelight, something that's incredibly worrisome considering recent events. Being the good neighbor that she is, Stellar Flare decides that he's been cooped up long enough, and stops by to make sure he's been caring for his daughter.

Turns out it's not the little filly she should be worried about.

Through a miraculous and cruel twist of fate, Sombra has survived death yet again. However, his many defeats have left him broken and near feral, and the Princesses see no option but to lock him away. Starlight Glimmer, seeing more than the rage and hate the others see, feels pity for the fallen king, and offers to take Sombra under her care to try and reform him.

She quickly finds out Sombra's more broken than anyone believes, and it's going to be a rocky road to redemption, but even the darkest shadows can take solace in the starlight.
