Authors notes

A few days ago (well, more like a week and a bit now), I got this crazy idea for a 40k/MLP crossover. Which is weird, since I haven't played 40k in about 5 years.

So yeah, I then went down to the crossovers group to bounce some ideas around (thanks for the help guys!) and this little Slice of 40k life popped out, more as a thought experiment than anything else. Note—if you head down to the crossovers group and track down my thread, there may be some background spoilers. Just a warning if you wish to avoid that sort of thing. If you enjoy that sort of thing, feel free to join the discussion.

I have to say, I really enjoyed writing this, although I really had to push myself to finish the last 200 words or so. I particularly enjoyed writing Fluttershy (I cried) and Pinkamena.

Heh, guess who my favourite characters are. I'll give you a clue: it's connected to the word count.

For those of you who are unaware; this is a Rhinox. They are the Orks of this setting. I envisage them being a little bigger than Big McIntosh (maybe even Princess Luna sized). And yes, AJ took out four of them in close combat.

You may begin your cries of 'Mary Sue' :trollestia:.

Because all the characters are at near constant war, some of them have gone through character development at a slightly faster pace than in the show. So Dash is already in the Wonderbolts, Fluttershy isn't quite as timid and frightened (at least, not in a medical setting. She's still scared of some things. She wouldn't be Fluttershy otherwise). Twilight is still antisocial, however, and even with the boost to their char dev, they are still the same characters. I hope.

Eversor assassins use combat drugs to enhance their combat powers. It usually turns them into an unstoppable monster. With Pinkie, however, it turns her into Pinkamena, who by this point is a fully independent split personality. I intend to have much fun with that.

Discord is the fifth god of Chaos, the god of Disharmony (or rather, the twisted god of freedom and independence, if you're into that sort of thing).

I toned down the effectiveness of magic, to counterbalance the typical fear and predudice associated with psychic powers. Also, non unicorn pyskers do exist. They're as common as unicorn pyskers (more common actually, as each race makes up a third of the Imperium's population, so only a third of them would be unicorns). So yeah, magic<psychic powers. Or to use my original analogy—why use a hammer when you have a sniper rifle? I'm sad that got cut, but it wouldn't make sense for Rarity to say that. The rhinestone/diamond comparison makes more sense anyway.

Gyrphons=Eldar. Craftworld Gryphons try to restrain their savage impulses, Dark Gryphons revel in them.

Any more information can probably be found on a 40k wiki. Here, let me google that for you.

I started this off as a little writing experiment, because I've found myself stuck in a rut recently. This is probably due to the impending deadline for my dissertation on the water quality of a nearby river (Spoilers—it's very clean). I'm glad I was able to finish it at any rate.

Do I want to continue this? Hell yes. Will I? I don't know. I'm already trying to update three stories, start a fourth, edit and restart a fifth and I've kinda promised to write a one shot for a friend as well (Sorry Kitsune!), not to mention a whole host of abandonded fic ideas (like my LunaBon romance one shot). Heck, I really struggled to finish this one. So yeah, biting off more than I can chew at the moment.

Ohboiohboihoiboi!
New ProfCharles story!
Drop everything!
Time to read!

2425793
Well, don't drop everything. What if you were carrying something heavy whilst having neglected to wear appropriate footwear?

2425815 Too late, my toes are goners ;_;

2425820
May they rest in peace.:fluttershysad:

2425827 They're resting on the floor, in pieces.

Close enough.

"Merchant, huh? Well, that makes sense. Of course Pinkie would be a merchant. Probably even a rogue trade-"

I'm a bucking temple trained Eversor assassin!

"...that almost makes more sense."

It was, I admit, nice to be reminded that a lot of the 41st millennium is not about high heroics, but about being thrust into unfortunate situations where you rapidly get in over your head. It was also nice to see that they were all mortal: None of the six ever struck me as having the discipline and focus to be a Space Marine.

I can think, however, of one question relating to Twilight Sparkle: Which Ordo? You know, of the two that would make the most sense (although I have a hunch, since there were no Sisters with her).

2425962
Malleus, with Radical leanings. She still won't work with daemons, but if she can turn them and their tools against each other she won't lose a nights sleep.

And yeah, the only one who might (emphasis on might) be a space marine is AJ, and that completely screws up her dynamic with Rainbow Dash.

2425994
In that case, thank you muchly for not making her a Grey Knight, and double thanks for not turning her into some kind of Kaldor Draigo.

Seriously, thank you. I don't have words strong enough to express my thanks for that.

2426019
Heh, no, nothing like that, I can assure you. Twilight's not even an experienced inquisitor—she's strong and smart, yes, but they've only just let her off the apron strings, so to speak.

I orginally consided AJ as a Dark Angel (because I love irony), but then that would mean that Dash would have to become a Space Wolf (which fits her, oddly) to counter balance it, but having two space marines would compleatly screw up the dynamic of the gang and force them into certain roles, limiting their character development, and I just couldn't be bothered with the resulting headaches.

Space marines are OP:twilightangry2:

2426051
Unless you were going the Death Watch route, in which case they'd all have to be Space Marines, creating a whole new set of problems. I just, you know, can't see Fluttershy taking a boltgun to anything. Unless you also went the parody route. Then Pinkie could be a Party Marine, Rarity a Pretty Marine, and Fluttershy could be an Angry Marine.

Anyway, food for thought.

2426103
Fluttershy is a Sister Hospitaller, aka a sister of battle. She's still had combat training. She just never exercises it. Like that grumpy medic from the Tanith First and Only. Damnit, I can't believe I forgot his name.

Edit—never mind, the wiki I'm on has just told me they're non-militant. Which conflicts with what a different wiki told me. Gah.

Edit edit—they are non-militant in the sense that they are not utilised as a millitary, but are still capable of fighting. So they are not pacisfists. Meh. Fluttershy can be one. It works better that way.

2426122
Did I really just have a canon argument with myself?

2426175
Looks like Pikie's not the only one with a second personality.

2426315
I actually tend to split myself three ways. There's normal me, impulse me and woah-i'm-not-touching-this-with-a-barge-pole me.

Normal me and impulse me get into a lot of arugments.

"Grab that girl's boob."

"What! No!"

"Grab it!"

"No."

"Grab it—oh, too late, she's gone. Want some ice cream?"

"Yeah, okay."

True story.

Aw come on, a dislike already? And no comment on why? That hurts, it really does :fluttershysad:

2426434
I will admit, it's always been a point of fascination to me why people will dislike things on this site. Typically because, once they have entered their dislike, they will then not explain why, or even give any information to imply why they disliked it.

But who knows? I don't think I've ever disliked something on FiMFiction simply because of the strength of the action. I'm pretty sure I'd have to find something outright offensive to enter a dislike.

2427142
Same. I think I disliked a particularly offensive trollfic once, but nowadays I just avoid them.

If I don't like something, I usually pop a comment as to why, and then leave, without leaving a dislike.

2431603
You think so? I'm always concerned I don't do enough describing.

Gryphons as Eldar? Interesting. I would've assumed they'd be Kroot analogues, but I suppose that's a bit too obvious.

I do hope you resolve the cliffhangers. Leaving AJ eternally at the mercy of da Boyz, Rarity threatened by cultists, et al. is a bit cruel, to the characters and to us eager readers.

Also, these groups may be relevant to your interests.

And remember, Rhinoxes is made for fightin' an' winnin'! :flutterrage:

2440803
yeah, in my orignal draft, gryphons were orks, but then I got hit by a lighting bolt of inspiration concerning the backstory of the universe.

I've made Diamond Dogs the kroot of the universe.

You know, for a moment then, I was confused. Cliffhangers? What cliffhangers? Ooh, those cliffhangers. I keep forgetting that only I knows what happens next:twilightblush:

Those groups are relevent to my interests. I suspected they might exist, but hadn't gone looking for them yet.

WAAAAAAAGH!:flutterrage:

2441144
Details! My one weakness!:raritycry:

Thanks, I'm glad you like it!

2441172
I'm not going to lie. I cried whilst writing Fluttershy's chapter.

2444912
There is a lot of room for plenty of feels in both universes.

But yeah, caught me by surprise too.

2500427
True. The hardest opponent the cultists have ever had was a drugged filly.

An astropath is going to walk over them.

2571251
I am Alpharius.

On an unrelated note, there is a distressing lack of Ponified Primarch images on the intertubes.

As far as Mane 6/40k crossovers go, these shorts are actually quite entertaining. There's a bit of surrealism of putting these cuddly characters we know and love, and putting them in these grimdark situations. But somehow, you seemed to get them to thrive.

As a longer story, the novelty will only carry it so far, at least without a lot of work on characters and plot to keep the momentum. But like I said, as shorts, glimpses into your take on the crossover, they're great.

Twilight was probably the thinnest on the characters you tried. Not really anything of her came through from beneath the "Inquisitor" persona. The rest were a great blend of their usual selves and their 40k counterparts.

If you get around to any more, I'd love to see who else is making friends in the grim darkness of the far future.

:trollestia: Ave Imperatrix Celestialis :trollestia:

2583941
Thanks! I originally wrote these to see if a 40k crossover was feasible. I came to the conclusion that it would be hard, but doable. And yeah, Twilight's section is the worst because I rushed it and didn't proofread properly. That's something I'm going to have to work on.

Ave Imperatrix Celestialis

I so need to use that somewhere.

2584747
Well, there are many flavors of MLP/40k crossover, each with its own pitfalls. But they're all feasible; I've read many high-quality stories in the warhammer group. A lot of trash, too, but that's unavoidable, and the good ones are definitely worth sifting through them.

2585699
Yeah, I've seen a couple of good ones myself.

As for the trash, well, Sturgeon's law I guess.
