Was he just abandoned because Canterlot and not-unicorn? That wasn’t really clear, so I actually expected it to come up again someday.
dial*
die*
pretty sure this statement doesn't need a question mark
11904677
Thank you.
Good chapter, he should definitely make Philomena a toy. Maybe a wood ball with a bell inside ;p
I've always loved the idea of automail
than*
How about a device that shoots heated air?, a plasma gun
the iron gem seems to be able to transfer a lot of magic...
if he found a way to turn kinetic energy into magic, he could make a fall damage immunity shoe
truly a conundrum...
swamp fever turns ponies (and other creature) into trees
and Shade can control how they grow
what if Shade turned somepony's stump into a tree stump ba dum tshh , grew it back into shape, and then used flash bee honey to turn them back?
would that work?
as for making actual prosthetics...
what about making an adjustable sleeve that went over the entire limb and uses some very sensitive scanning spells to make it respond to the minute electrical signals in their nerves?
going over the entire limb would allow for more grip while emulating the entire missing portion
the hardest part would be sensory input...
maybe somepony else in here has an idea for that?
also, if you're gonna have Shade make prosthetics, is he going to make them look like actual limbs or just robotic?
they don't make glasses that blend into your face right?
most disabled creatures probably spend their whole lives being viewed as flawed and imperfect
will Shade make hyper realistic fake limbs that hide what makes them different or clearly robotic ones that show off what makes them special?
probably both for different creatures would be best, now that i think about it
that way, they get to choose
maybe a built in illusion spell that can be turned off?
that would make it more straight forward
That might be a nice gift for Princess Luna; some kind of hologram index of stars. Maybe some pages showing what the stars look like if they were the size of an apple, maybe some solar systems, and others could be like that star map that was shown in the starwars prequels when Obi-Wan was looking for kamino
It's more of a decoration or maybe some form of a lamp kind of thing. So, an area effect illusion that projects fireflies like light floating randomly around?
Another idea would be for hospitals. Gem that sterilizes the area around itself. Well, it worked for water so why not.
Uh, maybe a floating ball projecting an illusion of a planet with a moon and sun orbiting it around?
Bit out of order there.
Alrighty, I caught up with the story, and I have to say, the story turned out mostly as I expected/hoped, a comfortable slice of life, a rancho-relaxo story with many quiet, calming chapters. I didn't expect the snippets of action and intrigue admittedly, but I have to say, despite the sometimes several-chapter-long chains of mundane life-to-life activities, this has been a nice treat these past few days.
All in all, I have to say, good job, this is usually not my cup of tea, but it has been an enjoyable ride, and will likely be a neat journey still to trek. Congratulations, Dear Author, you have another regular following this story.

Thank you.

:D
I wonder if there is a rune for imitate/copy and one for reflect? If so, it could help with making prosthetics even if it only makes an illusory model. Say one lost their left front leg. Imitate the right leg and reflect it to make a left leg.
indoor heating and cooling!
thermostats and air conditioning would be well appreciated
what about kitchen appliances?
rice cookers are deceptively simple, they just turn off automatically after all the water boils (the fact that water boils at 100 degrees Celsius prevents the pot from going any higher while there's still any water in there)
REFRIGERATORS
proper food preservation is MASSIVE
if a 7% decrease to crop loss is noteworthy, proper food preservation would be HUGE
imagine how much food ponies throw away periodically
refrigerator would cause one hell of a food surplus
they'd have no clue what to do with it
Could Shade make water walking horseshoes with a stronger eater repellent spell
Could you makes ships more buoyant with the spell
How about making a fue enchanted gems for his cloak that can keep him warm when it's cold and cool when it's hot. Then two large ones that provides better protection and armor then what the guards armor have. That will make Celestia's surprised. Expressly if it has a spell absorb and stores the magic that then can be used by the one wearing it.
Been busy so it's been a while since I left a comment. I still look forward to seeing new chapters of this come up, and I definitely still enjoy reading them. I had a few comments I wanted to make, and then I did also want to give a potential idea for Shade to work on.
First off, it's a few chapters ago, but I really like this detail:
I think it fits well with Shade's character, especially at his current age. I think you have indicated that there will probably be a pairing eventually but haven't indicated who with as far as I can remember. I do think you've set up Shade to eventually ascend into an Alicorn, and a pairing with Celestia would actually fit quite well. Though, even if that doesn't happen, I still like this as a bit of insight into Shade's character.
Next, I wanted to bring up Avalon briefly. I still think he is a good side character, but I'm actually somewhat happy that he has mostly remained a side character. Shade isn't inclined towards fast, close friendships. Those he does have usually come about because of other responsibilities or opportunities he has, such as his internship, his training, or when he is purchasing things. But I believe the story will eventually bring Avalon closer to the core of the story at some point. Even if only because of the likely prosthetic being developed farther down the timeline.
I've read a few comments about making him into a very skilled user of runic magic. But personally, I think that would be a mistake unless it is fairly far down the line. Maybe even well after canon starts. Even then, I don't think he should ever reach the point where he is of similar skill to Shade. Though he could, as a courier, manage to find certain texts to share rarer rune knowledge with Shade.
The reason why is pretty simple. Shade has basically every advantage over Avalon. It has come up in story that ponies are typically more magical than griffons, they can use that magic more naturally, and in Shade's case specifically he already has around 3 times the amount of magic of an average adult unicorn. This was achieved by Shade constantly training, both power and control since he was a baby. Considering Avalon is full grown if relatively young, and Shade is still a child, Avalon trying to catch up on just basic magical ability is essentially impossible.
Shade also has a far greater education when it comes to both math and just general knowledge of how the world works than just about any pony educated in Equestria, and Avalon probably has less education than an average pony in Equestria just because of growing up as a Griffon.
But the greatest advantage Shade has over Avalon is probably neither of these. Rather, Shade has previously indicated that his cutie mark, his greatest, magically enhanced, talent has to do with runic magic. Now, I could see Shade's specific talent being one of a few things, magic in general, runic magic, or spell-crafting. Since I suspect he will eventually become an Alicorn and gain a horn to cast magic with, I would suspect either magic in general or spell-crafting. In any case, it increases his abilities with creating and casting runic magic. Because of that, I can't see Avalon ever coming close to matching Shade in runic magic.
That being said, for a courier who travels between cities, even having simple magic to start fires, tell time, or finding directions would make a world of difference.
The next thing I wanted to comment on was Shade's enchanted items. Shade currently wears a necklace, and previously wore both a necklace and a bracelet as a general 'outfit'. I've also seen a few comments about adding additional pieces. But I would advise against that.
In the show, of the characters we commonly see, the only ones that typically wear anything at all are the Apple family or the princesses with their regalia. In the Apples' case, there is a hat, a ribbon, and a horse collar. Now, I think you mentioned at one point that wearing clothes or jewelry in Canterlot is more common, but I suspect that even then, generally almost no pony wears jewelry in general.
The first time Shade wore the jewelry was at the Grand Galloping Gala, which is the formal event of the year, so it made sense. Even after that, ponies would likely just look at Shade as being eccentric with one or two small pieces of jewelry. The problem with that, is that Shade very much doesn't want ponies looking at him. That is something he would avoid.
Given that the anti-Changeling jewelry would be important enough to him that it would override his normal caution on not bringing attention to himself, it makes sense that he would continue to wear it. It makes even more sense that he would try to make the spells more efficient so that he would only need one piece rather than wearing two, which he did. But unless he has a similar reason for wearing other pieces, I think he would mostly avoid wearing other enchantments in order to mostly avoid attention. I also think it might make sense for a pony in story to ask about him not wearing the bracelet every day anymore. It could be an effective way to kick off his thoughts on the matter.
I'm not saying he has to do this of course. His general paranoia may push him to wear more items even when he would otherwise want to avoid attention. That's up to you. But those are my thoughts on the matter.
But that brings up making things for the Mane Six. There have been comments about making them weapons, but I don't really see that happening. Not unless something big from canon changes first. The reason being, for all that the Mane Six ended up facing the 'big bads', 99% of the time they had no need for weapons. When they did need something more, it was almost always something on the level of the Elements of Harmony. Which I don't think Shade should, or could, create anytime in the next few centuries.
What that means is, even if Shade makes weapons for the Mane Six, they won't carry them around. More to the point, they won't consistently practice and train with them. Given Shade's own experience with weapons, I think he would realize that that would mean giving them weapons without training when they were in danger. That may honestly be more dangerous for them than not giving them weapons.
Shade's original plan was to effectively 'be available' just in case there was actually some help that the Mane Six ended up needing. Unless he decides to fully throw canon to the wayside, I think that would probably be the better approach for him.
Finally, my suggestion for an invention Shade can work on. Shade has recently been getting more focused on and involved with medical spells. Given that and his new illusory book spell that takes an exterior input and creates a recorded image, I think it would be interesting to combine those to work on updating medical imaging.
I can't recall if Equestria has X-rays in canon, but even if they do, linking the illusory book spell to a scanning spell could give doctors an image of scan results for things like broken bones or internal injuries. Potentially even a 3-dimensional holographic image, if you want to go that far. This could also allow for the spell to be cast once, by one doctor, and the results shared to everyone involved in treatment. Alternatively, for a less injury-specific use, it could also be used to create a magical ultrasound.
If Shade already has a scanning spell, I think it could be something he could work out quite quickly. If he doesn't have a ready-made scanning spell, a part of the BLP spell includes identifying injuries. That could be the basis for creating a spell if need be.
That's about all I have for right now. Thanks for all your effort writing the story, I'm still enjoying reading it.

Ok first, as always thank you for the impute and advice. Now to address things in some kind of order.
Yes he will have a pairing, I'm not saying who. And him hitting puberty will change a few things.
Avalon is and was planned to be a background character who shows up from time to time, with him being a courier being the reason. And he will never be near Shade in terms of magic or knowledge, but he will use it. Shade is a massive outlier in his skill at runic magic compared to most others in the same rank let alone the same age.
What you said about Jewelry is basically spot on. But I will say wearing jewelry is more common in my story then in cannon mostly because I think it fits better, so while some ponies might find it odd he wears jewelry it would probably seem more weird that he wears it so much instead of him wearing it at all.
As for the main six, well I'll keep that close to my chest but you are right that giving untrained ponies weapons is a bad idea especially if those weapons are powerful.
And the illusions scan idea isn't bad but I'm not sure if Shade would want something as world changing as the illusionary book in any form of public knowledge. But hey there are ways to keep things secret so we'll see.
Thanks again for the advice and have a great day. :D
11905087
I agree.
11905139
One every two weeks.
11905061
you're totally right, about giving untrained ponies weapons i mean
it would be dangerous
the thing is, they've always been in danger
from the very beginning when they went into the everfree before they got the elements (they were completely untrained going in there and they never really got formal training before doing any of the more dangerous things they did)
usually when they go somewhere, they go in completely naked.
not even a survival knife to speak of.
you have to remember that, if nothing is set in stone, then the mane6 is going to have to through every single thing they went through the first time and survive (it was unlikely the first time, with no guarantee of happening again)
if they're fated to survive and win in the end(like in canon), then Shade doesn't need to intervene at all.
but Shade has no real way of knowing if destiny is real or if the mane6 is protected by the story (this is real life for him now).
it would be logical for him to give them every edge they could possibly use (probably after proper training, now that you mention it)
and something has changed from canon.
the changelings can't passively gather love or hide anymore.
so the wedding invasion is pretty much cancelled.
and either they're gonna attack earlier or take a much more direct approach than in canon.
that, and always having to rely on 6 magical plot devices (that they don't even bother retrieving until after the villain shows up) is kinda cheap, don't you think? (i showed my friend mlp and they definitely thought so)
if the changelings are more aggressive and their lives are actually in danger, then giving them proper training and equipping them with means of self defense is probably the best way to move forward.
if Shade wants them to survive long enough to actually use the elements, that is.
in my opinion, that is
Do refrigerators exist in your Equestria?
Sun light for hydroponic systems?
For griffons, fish school sonar locator or fishing line lure to attract a fish?
Maple really liked the cinnamon in the pie. Shade could make lots of recipes with that, though I suppose that doesn’t count as a spell…
Magnification charm? Rarity uses those glasses. I suspect they help her to see thread count and up-close details in stitches.
What type of spa facilities exist currently? Do saunas, jacuzzis, and steam rooms exist? Shade knows some muscle healing spell, but what about muscle relaxation and mild vasodilation / circulation improvement spells?
Blanket warmer? Possibly based off a study of Philomena’s feathers?
What charms exist on the Guard armor if any?
11905180
I understand your point, and it has some merit, but I think you are more considering what could happen rather than what is likely to happen.
You say that they've always been in danger. But, have they always been in danger? Their first big encounter was with Nightmare Moon, in the Everfree forest. But it could easily be debatable that they were in actual danger. We saw in the show how Luna transformed into Nightmare Moon, and she lasted about 5 minutes and roughed up Celestia a little before she was banished. When she returned, she roughed up, but didn't seriously injure, two guards that attacked her and then basically left a group of ponies alone. Then, most of what she did to the Mane Six was for the purpose of preventing them from going to the Castle of the Two Sisters, and she was always physically present whenever they had an encounter.
What Luna, and Nightmare Moon, wanted more than anything was to be loved. She wanted to be loved and respected even if that meant also being feared. When we saw an alternate timeline where she won, ponies were trapped in Eternal Night and scared and concerned, but society was functional. Even Rainbow Dash, who was likely the one member of the Mane Six to be most likely to provoke a violent response from Nightmare Moon was not only fine but employed by her.
Given that, not only is it debatable whether they were actually in danger from Nightmare Moon, it is also debatable that Nightmare Moon might have stepped in to prevent other dangers in the forest. Nightmare Moon wants their love, she wants their adoration. If she can 'save' them and potentially receive that, why wouldn't she? Especially if all she needs is for them to doubt that she is evil to potentially make the Elements fail to work for them.
In that entire situation, making the Mane Six more competent fighters and giving them weapons would be potentially catastrophic. It would be making them dangerous enough to actually do something against Nightmare Moon instead of them being effectively incapable of resistance so long as they don't have the elements. The only possible response to that is for Nightmare Moon to escalate. Weapons theoretically wouldn't be enough against an Alicorn, so if Nightmare Moon was to escalate, that would just put the Mane Six in more danger.
This theme isn't that uncommon in the show either. Though there are some cases where that is not true. Indeed, one is in fact the Changeling invasion. Which is possibly the only large event that has truly been derailed from canon. But what is the likely outcome of it?
The Changelings have theoretically been deprived of the ability to gather love in the amount they would have in canon. They used the love they gathered to massively increase their numbers and to increase individual power and ability. Especially that of Chrysalis. So, the result of being deprived of that power is, by necessity, fewer numbers and a weaker Chrysalis.
If they attack, they are going to be attacking with fewer Changelings, and Chrysalis probably won't be able to overpower Celestia. If they attack early, this problem is compounded. There will be even fewer, weaker Changelings. That may make them more vicious, but they also won't have infiltrated the guard, or infiltrated the Castle, or been able to prevent the vast majority of the ponies' responses. The guard in this story is competent. If a smaller, weaker group of Changelings attack they would likely be fended off.
Additionally, right now, the Changelings have absolutely no reason to go after most of the Mane Six. You could make an argument for Twilight, but that would be a provocation that would probably just make their situation worse. If they attack early, the Mane Six may well be safer due to anonymity.
The question Shade needs to ask himself isn't 'How can I make the Mane Six the most capable fighters?' It's 'How can I make the Mane Six most likely to succeed?' Given that in canon, the Mane Six won more often than not by seeking out non-combat related methods, making them into fighters that would tend more towards trying to fight their way through could be disastrous. None of this requires fate or destiny. The Mane Six succeeded through canon because of how they acted. The situation being different may not really change that.
11905291
hmmm...
yeah, you're right
their main strategy is de-escalation
something big would need to change to warrant them needing weaponry
they did handle themselves just fine against those changelings...
and they did alright against the storm king's army in the movie (if you count that) iirc
it looks like they're doing a few more ponynappings to compensate
11905286
i forgot about that encounter...
if they end up meeting again, i guess twilight would end up with an extra childhood friend?
11905345
11905291
I won't talk about all this too much because I don't want to tip my proverbial hand, even if we're far out from these events.
But as I'm sure will become apparent and kind of already has, Shade doesn't fight fair. And why would he? This is the protentional end of the world, throw sand in their eyes, kick them while their down, basically if he has an advantage he can leverage he can and will do so.
I bring this up because no matter what happens Shade will be probably outclassed most of the time and won't leave things to chance if he can help it.
Anyway thanks for the interesting thoughts. :]
11905492
the one thing Shade has in his favour is foresight
knowledge of the future
and he's super paranoid
it makes perfect sense for him to over-prepare
any time!
Ok so here's one idea for a invention for shade to make.
Modify that one rune that he mentioned when making the water bottle that "destroys" contamination, mix it with a new life magic rune and make it purify water en masse via sea water and/or sewage to make water problems disappear across the country.thunk the water chip from the fallout series .
Or you could make it so it basically breaks down ANY material deemed garbage and turns it into basic materials like fertilizer so waste problems would also disappear.
Unless in this fics world they already aren't a problem ?
Yknow by this point I'm pretty sure shade has done more for equestria by himself than twi and prob way more skilled unless you changed her cannonically like some author do where she's basically god towards magic.
Wouldn't surprise me that shade will "become a alicorn and ascend" way way later in the story, maybe after a few villains under his belt if you plan on him doing that.
Sometimes I forget that he's a earthpony ? With how diverse his skills etc is.
Shade wants to help the MLP go better than it already did right?
In that case what about somekind of invention that might give ponies a larger interrest in the night life? To indirectly help Luna find her place in the world for when she gets back.
