So he finally remembered that he is in the body of a kid that hadn't even gone through puberty yet. He is going to have a lot more secrets to keep, and I bet Sunny-D will probably get slightly suspicious of him because I would guess he will keep an eye over his shoulder. Looking at the shadows to try and find something. Simply being terrified of not knowing what's what and who who. "The walls close in, the shadows whisper of conspiracy!"
Hmmm the loss of love and the presence of a detection spell will mean any confrontation with the changelings is going to happen waaaay sooner then in the show. That means at the very least changelings episodes will likely no longer happen. Although maybe the loss is small as canterlot probably doesn't produce much love.
Does patriotic love for a nation count? Or maybe self love, or love of your species 'supremacy'? Well whatever, it's a fun read. Also, I don't like to see mc's paralysed into inaction for fear of changing the almighty 'plot'. So shaking things up early will be good.
Hmm, yes, he really should tell Cellery about what he found in the forest in addition to his fight. He could also blur the truth a bit to explain his knowledge of them being able to sense emotions to give her his new enchantment. They did in fact detect him because of an emotional spike so 'the theory' won't be far-fetched. Hell, it won't even be a lie. He even can call them skinwalkers or skin stealers to hide the fact that he indeed knows they are known as Changelings till someone corrects him. This way it won't be suspicious he knows how they are called.
He should also create something to prevent sound from leaving certain area. Because who knows, walls sometimes have ears.
I wonder if Shade's emotion ward, or whatever he ends up calling it, will be considered enough of an illusion to be detected by that other enchantment

I'd say no as this is a shield not an illusion, and as a lot of magic is word and context dependent.
Hm... so the changelings have been THAT active... I would say desperate times, but because so little is known that it's impossible to make an educated guess
11884594
I was going off the assumption that if the spell is hiding his real emotions and showing a fake approximation of normal, it'd technically be an illusion
11884611
That's an interesting way to look at it. I honestly could see it going both ways if used right. Thanks for the interesting topic. :D
because it'd be pretty obvious to the changelings that they've been discovered if they use their ability and see absolutely nothing coming from Shade
11884614
The idea is to only block strong amounts of any emotion and keep the rest at a low level. They'd still sense his emotions but is would just look like a pony that doesn't have much to offer in terms of a meal.
11884617
Yeah, I guess the solution being a filter would sidestep a possible plot hole
This chapter is pretty interesting. I'll try to keep it a bit shorter than my previous posts, but I wanted to put in a comment here.
This chapter sets up an almost inevitable conflict between Shade and Celestia. Given everything that has and will happen, I think it is almost inevitable that Celestia will at some point realize that Shade knew about the Changelings prior to their emergence. Given the below statement, Celestia surprisingly enough does not know that she is dealing with Changelings.
Which means, at some point Celestia is going to realize that Shade knew who was kidnapping, and possibly killing, her ponies and he hid that information from her. I'm sure Celestia is fine with Shade not telling her a lot of things, but knowing and not telling her who is potentially killing her ponies probably isn't one of those things.
If the story continues in a serious way, and the confrontation is played seriously it could honestly play out as a pretty poignant, emotional scene. Celestia would confront Shade about hiding what was going on, and Shade would probably come off as defensive initially, but potentially crumble as the conversation went on.
"There are threats to Equestria and I need to do nothing to defend it." -- "You don't understand, it's not that I don't need to do anything, it's that I have to do nothing!" -- "I tried to help! Is that what caused ponies to die? Did I cause this?"
It could be an interesting transition from Celestia's perspective as she goes into a conversation confronting a pony that she cares about but who may have either been involved in or allowed the death of dozens or even potentially hundreds of other ponies. But by the end is trying to comfort a pony who was devastated that they might have caused a whole lot of suffering by trying to help.
"Shade, please can't you tell me what is going on?" -- "But what if that makes it worse!" -- "But what if it makes it better?"
Potential character development for Shade there. Is it better to strive for the best you can accomplish? Or is it better to try to take a known path to prevent failure? Especially when the potential stakes are so high.

Thank you for your perspective.
And I could see that happening but I might not go down that rout, as odd as it may sound I want this story to be mostly light hearted with a few heavy moments.
I sigh as the realization sets in. I'm not ready. I'm not ready to fight this battle, I have neither the strength nor knowledge to do so. I'm still elven for fucks sake. I need to grow stronger and keep doing what I've been doing, helping as much as I can while staying safe, but to do that I need to solve my main problem right now.

Thank you.
I'm really enjoying this story
11884635
I'm glad. :D
11884630
That's perfectly reasonable if you're going to keep the story generally light-hearted. I'm enjoying the tone it's currently setting, so no complaints here.
I suppose I was playing a little off your author's comment from last chapter about earning the gore tag. I was somewhat expecting the Changeling invasion to both happen earlier, and to potentially be more grisly.
If that isn't the case, and especially if the kidnapped ponies are truly just kidnapped and can be recovered, then that potential conversation definitely wouldn't fit with the progression of the story.
11884638
Oh I do intend to earn that tag, but overall this story has always been about exploring this world and it's magic. And as a general rule this world is more peaceful then most would assume. This will be a confusing mix of both peace and blood, as life tends to be.
Also I'd just like to thank you for all the advice you've given me. Thank you, have a cookie. 🍪
Looking at the conversation below gave me an odd thought (Nothing new in my case, most of my thoughts are odd). Well, Lore's musings about Celestia's reaction and Shade's overall emotional struggle did.
Unicorns could have a possibility of something called 'magic surge'. In canon, it was mentioned to happen to young unicorns (and in Flurry's case, alicorns). It's often mentioned all over various fantasy settings for magic to go haywire or surge in moments of stress or high emotional impact/moment. So we could assume it's a similar case for unicorns because why not?
Now what of the other pony tribes who channel their magic in other ways? Especially in cases like Shade who theorizes he has as much magic as an average adult unicorn (if I remember right)?
It's curious. How would that look? What would happen etc.
In this fic case, I would bet on it having to do with affinities Pony has and their tribe 🤔
In Shade's case, maybe space going wonky? Well, it wouldn't be fun when Space goes all Escher on you...
Hmm or as his Life affinity is more developed then maybe plants going ballistic depending on emotion? Mane waving in the ethereal wind, Eyes sparkling with the unfathomable depths of emotions and cosmic vistas, and plants starting to wildly grow while saturating in psychedelic colors and ever so slowly creeping and stretching in the direction of their Master's cause of grief.
You know, the works.
11884666
That is a fantastic thing that I've never thought about. For affinities I'd assume there'd be some reaction depending on how good they are at using that affinity. As for the other tribes I'd guess that Earth ponies would get a boost to their strength. And Pegasi would get a boost to speed to make something like a Rain Boom happen.
But that's just how I see it. Thanks for the interesting thought. :}
At first I thought that changeling could have been Maple, but after the Celestia bit probably not. Though now I wonder, will Maple have "mysteriously disappeared" too?
11884642
Of course. I'm glad I've been of help. Also, thanks for the cookie!
11884666
This is a pretty interesting idea. I think it might have to be relatively soon though. One of the other characteristics of surges, as you yourself mention, is youth. More importantly than that though, is often control. If a Unicorn, or in this case an Earth Pony, has a high level of control over their magic, an actual surge is probably pretty unlikely. Shade has been practicing control for quite a long time.
That being said, I actually think it would be a bit more interesting if the surge could lead to a new direction of development. I mentioned some time ago that Shade hadn't been acting like an Earth Pony. He's actually gotten a lot better about that with his training with Stone. However, he hasn't really ever used Earth Pony magic actively.
I assume that Earth Ponies in this story's lore go with the common theme that Earth Ponies have magic that makes them generally stronger, tougher, and more endurant. But that is entirely passive.
In that case, and assuming a hypothetical surge from Shade, it would be interesting to see Shade's oldest and most often used magic be the focus of a surge. That is, his telekinetic field. If that happens, he could struggle to control it and prevent himself from damaging his surroundings. If he did that by trying to retract the field, he may manage to at least partly succeed in turning it inward. That could result in actively enhancing his passive Earth Pony magic. So, he would increase his physical strength/durability/stamina at the cost of magic power.
It would open up an entirely new direction of study for Shade, as well as be a good callback to the beginning of his use of the telekinetic field as a simple extension of the basic 'grab stuff with hoof magic' magic. It could also eventually be an interesting development to share with Stone or the Royal Guard.
11884679
I would think that earthponies would cause minor earthquakes and pegasi would cause small localized storms. After all, horn surges seem to be unatributed magic, so the others should also be unartibuted.
11884765
Hmm interesting thought.
Well, don't know if it really is telekinesis proper, but on the other hand calling it hoof magic is kinda eh...
But using it as a form of pseudo exoskeleton or maybe overall buff? It's kinda neat and really doable idea I think.
Thanks for the update!
There’s a possibility that allowing that changeling to live was a death sentence for its failure to accomplish whatever it was supposed to do. It might have lived longer if Shade captured it, but that would have made a lot more problems for him. But it does now owe him for the save. Could be worse.
If Maple really is a changeling, Shade might end up sneaking up on her all over the place with that new emotional stealth charm… I’m hoping the changeling Shade clocked wasn’t Maple.
If Celestia poses a hypothetical to Shade, he might be able to throw some hints her way. That could be a way to keep the colt out of the big pony issue while allowing him input?
Oho!
