Is it...Can it be...A UFO/Space 1999 story?
Equestria does seem to have much of what they'd need to start playing around in space. We've seen compressed oxygen tanks and liquid fueled rockets, and Vinyl Scratch's audio equipment suggests that they're ready to start developing simple computers. All that's left is aluminum alloys (and even there, they could make a lovely composite out of spider silk and plastic), and they could likely use magic to fill in the gaps.
I’m really enjoying this silly, sweet scifi story! I can’t wait to see how it ends.
