Igneous Rock Pie is a young stallion trying to juggle the responsibility of caring for his sick father and keeping his family farm afloat. Cloudy Quartz is a young mare trying to live out her destiny even if it opposes her parents' expectations. They are two very different ponies living under very different circumstances. But at least they both like rocks.

This was absolutely wonderful. I have no idea how it's gone under people's radars so deeply. Bravo.

Well, I found this via your recommendation, and having read it through this afternoon, have given it the like and fave it deserves.

This was a fascinating, deeply engaging exploration of a society at once strange and familiar.

Then the characters opened their mouths.

Look, Early Modern English does have specific rules. You can’t just throw a bunch of thees and -eths and hope for the best, especially when some of the latter aren’t even going on verbs.

There’s also some weirdness going on with Burdock. For one, for all that he quietly scorns his people and longs for Cloudy to leave Plain society, he’s still aghast by a violated taboo that only Plain ponies would care about. Still, I suppose that’s just a matter of his upbringing informing his reactions in spite of his desire to distance himself from what he sees as a desolate, dead-end culture.
But then there’s Cloudy’s cutie mark. Which is literally three rocks. I’m not sure what her father expected.

Despite these issues, I was still deeply engaged and loved what you did with the history of both the costars and the world they inhabit. The quest for the Pairing Stone was especially outstanding, and I love little details like Maud getting her mane color from her father, or Igneous’s ability to pull pickaxes from his hat. Thank you for it, and best of luck in the judging.

This was a peculiar story and, not gonna lie, a bit of a slog to read through. The language of the Plain ponies is difficult. As FOME said, the thees and thous are troubled and in need of shepherding.

But I did read through it. And since I've been pushing to get through my backlog and quick to drop stories that don't grab me early on, that wasn't a given. And having gotten through it I'm glad I did.

I agree with SirNotAppearing's comments in his Honorable Mention: "Of Providence and Plain takes what could easily be portrayed as the most boring place in Equestria (perhaps even to comedic effect) and gives it a proper life of its own, unique and touching". The characters and the community come alive, and the Pairing Stone scene is a wonderful touch of fantasy that feels right at home in what is otherwise Equestria's least fantastical location. And the complicated Pie family history perfectly explains why Pinkie Pie was born to them.

So yeah, in spite of its rough edges I was happy to give it an upvote, and proud to be the one who makes the rating visible :pinkiegasp:
