Admiral Biscuit

Virtually invisible to PaulAsaran

T

Somewhere in the storm, the van lost a window. No matter, the equipment is weatherproof and so are the pegasi.

Highway hypnosis can be cured by a trip to Starbucks. The weather ponies have never been, so what better opportunity?

Touchscreens weren’t pony-friendly, although they’d discovered they could use them by booping them with their noses.

Love this mental image.
Actually, the whole thing was full of great mental images, ponies sticking their heads out windows, that childlike glee of a drive-thru. All great stuff.

TikTok launched in December of 2016, and didn't expand outside of China until September 2017. Since this happens concurrently with Silver Glow's Journal--it doesn't seem like the team has been together that long, what with this being their first Starbucks, and not going into what they did in winter after storm season ended--and that's set in 2016, it probably shouldn't be making an appearance.

Biscuit, your bday is August 4, and you turned 45 in 2022? You are one day younger than Tom Brady.

Hey first, happy 45th birthday! Now get off my lawn, heh.

Another adorable Admiral story! A van full of tired happy ponies drinking coffee and recovering from tornado work is a great image. You really know how to bring ponies to life with humanly mundane details and perspective on personalities.

A flock of pegasi flew out.

That brings up a great question: what should we call a group of pegasi? Sure flock works, but how about squall, or tempest? I guess storm wouldn't work, considering they're pegasi, but I still like it.

Anyway, thank you for the story!

The gamble had paid off; they’d caught one just outside of Hartley, and the pegasi had chased it almost to Dumas.

You can get Android devices with touchscreens that use "resistive" technology, which will detect any limb that can apply pressure, not just skin. But admittedly those usually either have worse specs or don't get up-to-date software, because they're usually either really cheap $30 phones/tablets or stuff designed for government/construction/military sector (to be used with gloves on)

But then you don't get the adorable mental image of ponies booping the screen, which I'm pretty sure Biscuit has used before.

Happy Birthday mate !!
You’re a distinguished character on this site :ajsmug::twilightsmile:

This story makes me want to work with ponies even more. Thank you for sharing this on your birthday!

Dusty checked his mirrors and backed out of the spot. He’d taken the opportunity to get his wallet out of his back pocket—it was nearly impossible to remove it while he was driving or stopped, and had more than once done the awkward lean-over while holding up traffic in the McQueue.

Been there.

Once again, your slice-of-life story is more invigorating than most adventure stories. I'm so glad you decided to expand on the team, and that Dusty got the protag seat. Happy birthday!

Flerd? Portmanteau of flock and herd.

He yawned again, and picked up a Tim Horton’s cup from the morning. It was empty.

they’d intercepted a promising storm in New Mexico

So do I.

Actually, the whole thing was full of great mental images, ponies sticking their heads out windows, that childlike glee of a drive-thru. All great stuff.

It's a fact, ponies make everybody's life better.

I hadn't even considered that . . . you get used to something tech-wise being ubiquitous, and just assume it was always a thing. (I get called out further down in the comments for Tim Horton's in Texas . . . oops.) I changed TikTok to Vine, which I'm pretty sure was around in 2016.

And yes, you're right on the money with the timeline. Maybe it's before Silver Glow visited, maybe it's after, but either way it would be in the late summer of 2016.

Biscuit, your bday is August 4, and you turned 45 in 2022? You are one day younger than Tom Brady.

Huh, I didn't know that he was born just after me.

 I like character pieces, and ponies are great characters. It's the little things in life

That brings up a great question: what should we call a group of pegasi? Sure flock works, but how about squall, or tempest? I guess storm wouldn't work, considering they're pegasi, but I still like it.

This was actually discussed in the comments on one of my stories, but I can't remember which one. :rainbowlaugh: I suppose 'flock' is good enough, but it might depend if they're eating your fish or raiding your hotel room for Mountain Dew and Doritos. Going with my preferred pony language, they might call themselves a kudde of pegasi, which encompasses both 'flock' and 'herd' in its meanings.

Anyway, thank you for the story!

You're welcome!

I'm old enough to have watched that movie in theatres :derpytongue2:

The ponies go where the tornadoes are, as they should. They probably aren't currently allowed in Canada or Mexico (and I don't know how prevalent tornadoes are in Canada or Mexico).

11321946
Sure, or they could get phones with styluses (styli?) but where's the fun in that when they can nose-boop a phone?

11322099

But then you don't get the adorable mental image of ponies booping the screen, which I'm pretty sure Biscuit has used before.

Exactly! And I have, in Practical Difficulties. It's an adorable mental image.

11322124

This story makes me want to work with ponies even more.

I know, right? It'd be great, and they'd be the best co-workers ever.

Thank you for sharing this on your birthday!

You're welcome! It's my present to everybody.

11322229

Been there.

You and me both. It's a challenge.

Once again, your slice-of-life story is more invigorating than most adventure stories. I'm so glad you decided to expand on the team, and that Dusty got the protag seat. Happy birthday!

Thank you! I always meant to do more with the tornado team, but just never did, then when I was thinking of a vanload of ponies going through Starbucks, well, it was just the right fit.

I think that there's a lot to be said for slice-of-life; not everything has to be action all the time.

11322272
That's an interesting choice. A flerd of pegasi . . . that does seem like the kind of word ponies would use.

11322525
I missed it in theaters, but it was the first movie I ever bought on DVD all the way back in 1999. The movie is still a ton of fun!

11322528
I wonder if the pegasusses prefer working the States to working Equestria, even taking tourism and exploration out of the picture. I can't imagine that Equestria has much call to fund a flight to run around the country chasing storms.

11322493
Fun fact, in the year 2022 Tim Horton's announced a planned expansion into Texas . . . although since this story takes place in 2016, I kinda jumped the gun on that. :rainbowlaugh:

Probably should have been Love's coffee instead. I think I'll change that.

11322521

they might call themselves a kudde of pegasi

I totally read that as a cuddle of pegasi at first. :rainbowlaugh:

11322528
Sorry, I've just realised that my mind drifted and I didn't actually reply to your question. No, we don't tend to get tornadoes in Canada. Lotta lightning storms on the prairies, though.

11322548

That's not wrong, either.

I honestly couldn't tell you the first movie I bought. The first CD I owned was Baby's Got Back by Sir Mixalot . . . that's probably still around my house somewhere.

I think to a certain group of pegasi, there's a lot to like about fighting proper feral weather. Same might apply to some of the coastal pegasi, like Silver Glow. I think that Gardez said it very well in Weather Appreciation Week, while there are probably plenty of pegasi who only want to work in normal weather, there are also some who want to fly into the teeth of a storm and fight it. Some of those would jump at the chance to get to Earth and fight completely untamed weather.

Sorry, I've just realised that my mind drifted and I didn't actually reply to your question. No, we don't tend to get tornadoes in Canada. Lotta lightning storms on the prairies, though.

That's okay! I didn't think they were commonplace--we don't get them all that much in Michigan, either. Enough that learning to duck and cover in elementary school is a thing, enough that most areas have tornado sirens, but we don't hear them all that much.

The area of Texas they're in puts them on the western end of Tornado Alley, and is a decent jumping-off point for tornado chasing.

The idea of a van stopping, a door opening and then a flock of pegasus flying out conjures up thoughts of organised pandemonium.

45? Baa, a mere child. When as old as me you are, look as good you will not.

Yeah, the people who write "Earth invades Equestria" really don't speak 'tornado' fluently. Besides, no need to invade when we can just franchise Taco Bell and Starbucks.

Ooh, this was great! Pegasi, storms, and frappuccinos are some of my favourite things! :pinkiehappy:

That's what I'm saying. No need for a military invasion when you can just franchise the restaurants that ponies love.

2004 had roll-up prizes allocated for Texas so there had to be at least 1 store there. (granted if memory serves it was listed with a bunch of other Southern States)

Happy belated birthday dear friend.

This was a fantastic story yet again, Admiral. Also, mention of Dusty and storm chasers, I gotta share one of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite movies.

"IT'S THE WONDER OF NATURE, BABY!"

This was delightful as always. You make this seem like such a real world.

Huh. I really always thought you were older than me.

Everything I've seen says that they're opening their first store in Texas in 2022. There could be some other reason why they had prizes allocated in Texas or anyplace else they might not have had stores, I don't know. There could also be a Tim Hortons in an airport or something where it doesn't count on the list of 'stores.' Mind you, I'm just checking what Wikipedia says about franchise locations, so there's no way I can know for sure.

I really should watch that movie again, it's been a really long time.

There's been plenty of weather these last couple of weeks, a few good storms rolling through.

It is the real world, it's just improved by adding ponies. :derpytongue2:
