What I have noticed so far with my own writing is the fact that it helps immensely to read what other people write. Sure, stories of professional writers help quite a lot, but so do stories from people that botch-up about everything they could possibly botch-up. It gives you a certain sense of "Yeah, that doesn't feel right to write...". It won't make you magically better at writing (even though I wish that was true, that would be really great >.>), but it helps. The other thing that helps to improve one's own writing is, of course, writing a lot. Like... a lot. :)
