The Song

Grogar went down to Ponyville, he was looking for a soul to steal
He was in a bind, for he was way behind, so he was willing to make a deal
When he came across this sweet mare, strumming a guitar somberly
So Grogar walked over to the mare and said, "You listen to me!
I'm not just a master sorcerer, I appreciate music too
And if you care to take a dare, I'll make a bet with you
Now you play the guitar quite well, but I suggest you give me my due
I'll bet a guitar of gold to get your soul, I'm sure I'm better than you."

The mare said, "My name's Pear Butter, and it might be a sin,
But I'll take your bet, you're gonna regret, 'cause there ain't no way you'll win!"

Pear Butter, I hope you plan to play your guitar hard
The Shadow World's come to Ponyville, and Grogar deals the cards.
Now if you win you'll get this shinny guitar made of gold,
But if you loose, then Gorgar gets your soul!

Grogar opened up his case and he said, "I'll start this show."
And dark magic coursed through his horns and his bells began to glow
And he strummed his hoof across the strings it made an evil hiss
Then a band Timberwolves joined in and it sounded something like this:

When Grogar finished, Pear Butter could only shrink back in fear
It seemed like she was destined to lose all that she held dear
But then her beloved husband Bright Mac rushed in to her defense
And Grogar laughed at the stallion and said, "You fool, you're clearly dense!
You interfered, and now your soul is in the pot as well!
Soon I'll have all the souls I need, then I'll reclaim my Bell!"
Bright Mac said, "You want my Buttercup? You'll have to go through me!
The love we have for each other will last for eternity!"

Pear Butter was inspired and said, "Grogar, you've had your fun!
Now just stand back and watch as I show you how it's really done!"

"Fire on the mountain, run boys run!"

"Evil burns away 'neath Celestia's sun!"

"Chicken in the bread pan pickin' out dough!"

"Granny does your dog bite? No child, no!"

Grogar bowed his head because he knew that he'd been beat,
And he laid that golden guitar on the ground in defeat
Pear Butter said, "You can come on back if you ever want to try again,
But I told you once, and I'll tell you twice, there ain't no way you'll win!"

She played:
"Fire on the mountain, run boys run!"

"Evil burns away 'neath Celestia's sun!"

"Chicken in the bread pan pickin' out dough!"

"Granny does your dog bite? No child, no!"

Author's Note:

Obviously, this story was inspired by The Devil Went Down to Georgia by the Charlie Daniels Band. However, when plotting out the way the scenes played out, adapting the lyrics, and imagining the music and singing voices, I was inspired by several versions and adaptations of this song:
Primus - The Devil Went Down To Georgia
The Devil Went Down to Scunthorpe- Toy Dolls
Devil Went Down to the Truck Stop- Chris "Sugarballs" Sprague
"Devil Went Down To Georgia" performed by Natalie Stovall
Devil went down to Georgia- Dave Salyer

HA!
Coincidentally..... the first time i ever came to America in 1989 that was one of my favorite songs.
And you took that song... and made one... hell of a story behind it.

Nice to see a story based on this old folk song.

Heard the song in Coyote Ugly, Played it in Guitar Hero 3, and I guess read it in MLP form.

Pure Gold, this is.

Really neat take on the song with the Apple family and Grogar in it!

I am so happy that you commented on this story!

Why is this story still marked incomplete?

Excellent work. It's especially significant considering Charlie Daniels himself passed into the Great Beyond yesterday. R.I.P., good sir :ajsleepy:.

I never heard of these songs but they sound pretty cool
