Star Swirl the Bearded is freed from over 1,000 years spent in Limbo, but a dark presence is released with him. So he decides to be a complete jerk about the whole thing.
It also helped ponies find him in those dark places where the visual sensory turns to treachery and light becomes just a simple memory! Provided, of course, aforementioned ponies weren’t having their insides slowly digested by void spiders.
That may be the smartest thing you've ever done/said.
Starlight groaned. “This has got to be like… a dozen friendship lessons I’ve passed today or something. I mean… justlookall the disintegrating I’m not doing!”
She's right you know.
Twilight frowned. “Okay, but that would sort of prove Star Swirl's point about you.”
Starlight rolled her eyes. “‘I told you so’s’ don’t work unless you're around to say them, Twilight.”
Starlight's on fucking fire today.
Somnambula scoffed. “No wonder this one turned evil.”
She has a point, warm milk and chocolate cookies are highly therapeutic.
“I’m a hat short on a short on temper, Starlight, so watch it a little.”
A fair point.
Rockhoof took a moment to flex. “How do you think I maintain such mountainous muscles, lass?Notdrinking milk at all hours of the day and night? Perish the thought!”
I can't help but imagine you voiced by Major Armstrong from FMA rather than being vaguely Scottish.
“We’ll sure!” Applejack said. “But Ah’d feel a lot safer in this unnatural place with a nice hat on my head.”
Psychological I take it?
Pinkie smiled and nodded. “Of course! I always have a spare hat in case of hat emergencies! I also keep a few books for Twilight, gems for Spike, bandages for Rainbow Dash, birdseed for Fluttershy, and a small sewing kit for Rarity… Ooo! Ooo! And some heavy sedatives if Starlight is having an off day.”
... Crazy Prepared indeed.
“No, no,” Starlight said. “That’s fine. Pinkie can stop carrying sedatives when I’ve proven I don’t need them.”
I love self aware Starlight.
“Ooooh, yesss…” Mistmane cooed in agreement as she looked up and winked. “I’ve had him caught in my web many times.”
“… You mean ‘you’ve been caught in his web’, right?” Starlight said.
I don't think she does.
“Annoying Pink-girl-mare-thing, shut up so I canhearmyself think!”Star Swirl declared.
You need karma. Badly.
Starlight continued. “And it’s written in Old Ponish…” Starlight smiled. “With rather pretty calligraphy,” she quipped as she looked over the bold rune-like words with sharp, almost dagger-like points to them.
I mean, if you're gonna make the Necronomicon, might as well make it legible.
“Oh, I don’t know,” Starlight said as a near euphoric look came over her. “It feels pretty good once you get used to it!It tingles in all therightplaces!”
You are a worrying mare.
“Ah really should stop askin’ questions…” uttered Applejack.
You really should.
Sunset’s smile grew and she shrugged her shoulders. “They say sodium is a great preservative! Gotta keep my looks and spirit preserved to deal with all the…today…today has been!”
Applejack stared at Grogar intently, her emerald eyes quivering as if they wanted to break eye contact with the animal but dared not for fear that one glance away would spell her doom. “Ya know, if I knew ‘evil goat’ was going to be what’d top the list of horrible, horrible things Ah’d see today I’d have tried to drown myself with my bed-milk.”
Applejack let out a heavy sigh. “I specifically, and purposely didn’t, but yer gonna tell me anyway…”
Ah ________________
“So, what did I do while I you were all away, you ask?” Sunset intoned.

Yoish!!!!!!!!! New chapter!
8754155 I think Karma got itself drunk just to deal with a reality with Starswirl in it ... and probably got even more wasted when its plan to stuff him in limbo failed. At least it has the power houses of Starlight and Sunset there for a plan B.
And with Starswirl it'd probably be in Frieza minuets.
I am seriously wondering how this will end. Most of the ones that come to mind would require gore, dark, and possibly tragedy tags for what is going to happen to Beardy.
...ya know, I kinda want Sunset and Starlight to come up with a spell to swap a pony's gender just to make Starswirl shut up in regards to his chauvinistic comments.
"Oh, Jeff is not blushing,” Mistmane said. “That redness means he’s ready to ma—”
“Cease your repulsive conversation!” Star Swirl ordered. “Your basic mare instincts disgust me!”
For once, I agree with this version of Star Swirl.
..........
With the very clear message of what that means for my mental state, I'm now going to dump a bowl of tapioca pudding on my head and inform Massachusetts they have a new emperor.
8754454 They have sledgehammers in Equestria! And if that doesn't work, then she can just go with really big rocks! Or dropping him from a terrible height!
8754915 Just finished watching it ... they really should've cleared that up ages before now. Rather than letting the mountains of fics that have him as a she. Portraying Clover as a mare in the Hearth's Warming Play. And never bringing it up till now.
8755013 It was entirely fanon that Clover was female, never canon.
Commander Hurricane was confirmed male and yet played by the female Rainbow Dash.
Plays have often had male characters played by females, (Spike's VA is female, and frequently does so for young male characters) and men have often played female roles.
So I just realized, that I am REALLY looking forward to the hopeful moment when Twilight just let's loose on Starswirl. Sunset + Celestia Rage Against Stupidity loose... Or if Celestia came on down in the finale to comfort Sunset in that most wonderful of motherly ways, in a cataclysmic solar rage!
Hurricane was confirmed male? When (and in the show. Hasbro confirmed that the comics are not canon. Rather the people bought the liscensing to use MLP name and characters. So it is Sponsored Fan Fiction.)? I mean it's fanon, and makes sense. My gripe with Clover is that he's an important part of Equestrian History yet outside of the Play. Clover's never shown, nor was it countered that Clover was a male not a female till now.
Still, yes. Historically males playing female parts, or in modern times vise versa is a thing. Yet you'd think that they'd have mentioned that prior to now. Yet all fan fics and fanon till now had Clover as a female. Hasbro with how important Clover was, never once stated gender of Clover (nor anyone to my knowledge). Then 8 Seasons later dropped the bomb of "Oh! He's a dude btw".
8755894 It was in the TCG in 2016, which I think is considered canon? If not, then I'm wrong, and mostly made the assumption based on Private Pansy more or less exclusively referring to Hurricane as 'Sir.' But was told earlier today that using sir for a female instead of ma'am is perfectly acceptable in the military unless corrected to use another honorific.
Today I learned, whoops.
Either way, they haven't confirmed or denied most of the genders of the founders because it's not relevant to the story. What difference does it make?
Ladies and Gentlecolts, I at work, had a revelation! A way for positive character growth for Starswirl in such a manner that while he would not be completely divorced from his jerkiness, he might be set upon the path of Harmonious Friendship! All it may take, is one mare, with one desire. One mare, to display the awesomeness of Ponyville. One mare, to introduce a bottle of Zap Apple Cider. One mare, to send all the jaws of the cast crashing to the ground in utter astonishing disbelief!
Coming to your OhdearCelestiawhy channel this night... Granny Smith sets her eyes on one bell-hat-grump. And she's not leaving till she plants some sense into that ole wizard!
8757281 Yeah when I was in the Army (only made it to AIT before getting an honorable medical discharge ... Which still sucks) all my instructors were referred as sir.
And I actually talked to Hasbro about that and the comics before. They aren't Canon. Rather they paid Hasbro the right to use the my little pony liscence. Making them endorsed fanfic and fan art. But not canonical to the show.
8757429 Then yeah, that was my mistake and my own assumption. Sorry about that.
I maintain though, for the canon story we were given, their genders don't matter. It's about what they did, not what sex they are. So Hasbro not confirming it until they had to use pronouns at a later date makes a fair bit of sense. And it just means an AU tag for fanfic writers.
I hold that it matters for the simple fact that we've got hundreds of fic that are awesome and felt canonical with genders set up since the first Hearth's Warming Pagent. One's with characters that were enjoyable, and well written. But then the bombshell makes it instantly non-canon. That and it just feels wrong that with as important as said ponies were, as big an impact that they've had on Equestria. They drop that bombshell with no build up.
We know more about 5 random, ass pulled, out of the blue, wtf did Hasbro make them, Pillars. Than we do with the 6 biggest names in actual Equestrian history. Hell the Pillars were never even hinted at, even in Rainbow Rocks when we see the Siren's banishment (when we see Starswirl send them through a portal. Making it look like he alone did it.), than we do any of the founders of Equestria.
For 6 (almost 7 years) we've been left in the dark about them. With only the pageant there to give a notion about them. And the 6/7 years of fanfics to fill in the gaps. Then out of the blue, with no canonical heads up from the show. They drop the bomb that Clover was a guy. Heck that card you mentioned. Didn't say he was a guy, just an assistant.
Adding salt to the wound. It wasn't even a big reveal. Or even given real importance. Just "Hey, Clover was a guy, that doesn't have anything clover realted to his body. He chased a mare, and left a stone he didn't want to deal with in the other world. Because it works so well for Starswirl to use that world as a garbage bin."
8758111 Ok, but fanfics are at the absolute bottom of the cannon pecking order.
Demanding that a multibillion-dollar company bow to the whims of fanfiction of all things is an awful lot like a leaf yelling at the wind because it doesn't want to be disturbed.
I agree, there are tonnes of wonderfully written, beautifully done fanfics out there... that now need an AU tag. That's it. That doesn't belittle them, that doesn't derive from their intrinsic value, or belie the effort put into them. Clover now being canonically male doesn't mean anything. Just as it didn't mean anything when the fandom assumed he was female. It's an extra tag.
8758122 It's not about bowing to them. It's about respect. With how important they are to Equestrian History. We know almost bubkis about them, and dropping not just a bombshell with no build up. But it having a backseat, nothing more than a poor ass rendition of them. Is bullshit.
Starswirl's sending the Sirens to Equestria had a flash back to it. Hell even Tirek's banishment had a picturebook flashback to it (with surprise Starswirl's Ego taking center stage). But Clover? We don't see it. Hell we get more flashback / info on Wallflower's actions than we do about Clover. Puddinghead? Get's even more of the shaft. We get a small snippet of a law Puddinghead wanted to pass. Than we do about his/her past.
We get more information on 5 ass pulled ponies. Than we do on any of Equestrian's founder's. Said founder's have no statues, no wings (other than being all shoved in the restricted section of a library for a few books), no holidays, nothing to show them or their lives. Fuck we know more about Starswirl, a cliffnote in history. Than we do with the ponies who made Equestria possible.
And when we do get something (over half a decade later). It's next to nothing (and it's not even in the show. It's in a movie.). We still got more about the Pillars, than we did about Clover. We got to see them full bodied, and voiced in their stories. Than we'll ever get about any of founder's. It's not bowing, it's about giving the founder's some GD respect, and not just tossing out bs like that with even less build up than they gave any of the stories villains. Or the Pillars. Or Starswirl's massive ego.
I love this story so much. Also, were Rainbow Dash and Flash Magnus getting it on off-screen this ENTIRE TIME? Also, I'm sure Spike is having the time of his life today. I think Applejack and Starlight are probably my fav. characters here.
Meadowbrook simply rolled her eyes. “Jeff,” she said as she tossed up a quick smile and waved. “The Spider’s name is Jeff, or a reasonable facsimile in Dire-Dread-Void spider, speech. And he’s perfectly agreeable once you take the time to get to know him.”
How's Billy doing Jeff?
Did your dad ever learn to except you for who you are.
That may be the smartest thing you've ever done/said.
She's right you know.
Starlight's on fucking fire today.
She has a point, warm milk and chocolate cookies are highly therapeutic.
A fair point.
I can't help but imagine you voiced by Major Armstrong from FMA rather than being vaguely Scottish.

I don't think she does.
You need karma. Badly.
I mean, if you're gonna make the Necronomicon, might as well make it legible.
You are a worrying mare.
You really should.
Quite.
Actual minutes or Frieza minutes?
You are really making me hate Star Swirl. By some benchmarks, well done.
So, Starswirl became what he is now by drawing too much forbidden knowledge, power and mucus from Grogar?
Well, that explains everything.
I would "Just when I was sure it couldn't get worse," but I won't, because I knew it was going to get worse.
Admittedly, it's gotten worse than I had been anticipating, but that's neither here nor there.
Luckily, however, Sunset Shimmer is back on the scene, which means she will shortly spring into action.
"Action" is code for "beating."
And "beating" is code for "beating Star Swirl in the head."
And "beating Star Swirl in the head" is code for "beating Star Swirl in the head."
Look, I got tired of typing in code, alright?
In regards to Grogar:
When Twilight finally breaks, I sincerely hope Star Swirl will as well. Into countless pieces. Which will then be fed to Grogar, as is just.
Ah

Does ectoplasm wash out?
Will Twilight finally snap and give a Jerk-Ass the what for?

...I know this is being milked for all of its humorous worth, but I just want Sunset to pummel Star Swirl. With many blunt objects.
And given how dense Star Swirl's acting, she might get through a number of blunt objects before too long.
8754382
... did you not read chapter 2? Rolled-up newspapers are technically blunt.
8754397
Yeah, but they're light. I'm talking heavier blunt objects...like sledgehammers.
Somehow I am far less surprised about Grogar’s slimmer affecting Starswirl the Braindead.
8754433
Sunset doesn't want to risk Equestria being gone when she gets back with CHS's sledgehammer, duplicated by 100
