Equestria is suffering a dire problem. You are part of that solution, even if you aren't entirely aware of it. No, we don't need a dragon slayer or something like that. We're sure you can handle this just as you are.

you got your answer dude, now go check the damn list and see who's next. maybe the unbelievably adorable derpy? the heart stopping cuteness that is fluttershy? the speedy awesomeness of rainbow dash?
Errgh... I want to be wary, she may be pulling at our heartstrings but...
Would you be ok with a hug, Princess? (It might be better to hug first and ask questions later.)
What was the original scope of the spell, it's intended effect separate from what actually happened?
Have Cadance and Shining Armor had their foal?
7744121 This question has been answered. She cast a spell of such deep harmony that it subdued the vitality of ponies over generations. It eroded both sexes and led to the situation they're in now.
Alicorns should NOT play with mortal life like that. Had've been me, I would have promptly walked away after hearing that - then somehow revealed the truth - and watched her perfect, harmonious society crumble...
More questions keep percolating through my brain...
Are you ok? You're not in any danger of, well, dying are you? This talk of not being here for your little ponies has me concerned for you.
Also, can we belay all this talk of punishment? If we can get to the bottom of things and implement a permanent solution that saves the little ponies, and their Princesses, that is atonement enough.
are there any out-liers? like any who CAN still breed?
Bare no mistake - Bear no mistake
Forgot that I have a job I'm supposed to be doing other than asking questions.
Okay... first off, NOW you're going to follow me.
Yes, through your castle.
Why? Because.
Um... which way is the kitchen?
Fine... let's go that way.
Why? ... fine... you did good on answering that question, Celestia. And when you do good, you get waffles.
<now let's hope she stays forthcoming>
we have established that celestia has fucked up, stated the problem (ponies cant make little ponies), identified the cause of said problem (ponies cant make little ponies cause a spell is eroding their vitality), and implemented a stop gap measure (studs)
so i guess my question would be as follow:
1) how effective has the stud program been so far? I.E. how many little ponies are in the works, how many studs have they gone though how long is he expected to last, what is being done to mitigate the stud burn out rate. hopefully we can dertermin what kind of doomsday timer were working with. (side note: just from reading context clues and inbetween the lines i would posit that the little ponies are already fucked since as of right now only the off spring of stud program will be able to breed where looking at a stupidly small gene pool or inter-generational breeding partners with a species bust event on the horizon)
2) other then the studding program what measures are being taken to you know fix the breeding problem and how likely are they to work?
3) so where part of the stud program and that means breeding ponies and considering how dangerously close to extinction they i understand how important we are but will we be able to live our life normally or will it be jumping form one mares bed to the next?
4) have they used female humans in the breeding program and alting them to pop out baby ponies? while longer between baby ponies it would be safer for the human wouldn't it, nearly a year of recovery time and all that right?
Could we talk with Twilight about this? I think that if work together we can fix this. Also do you want any foals?

Who are you to judge that? You are in a forign world where rules of nature are extremely diffrent. Fate and destiny are very real things. Magic guide ponies from the day they are born. The will of alicorns guide the heavens. It could verywell be that if the alicorns didnt interfear with the fabric of reality the world could cease funtioning. But the most simple answer is, they probably dont know any better. At the veryleast Celestia was raised in the age of Discord. This means they are ignorent of the concept of a powerful leader who doesnt manipulate their people. Celestia has chosen to be benevolent in her intent even if it has backfired, this is a step up from Discord. And perhaps a nessary evil to balance his actions.
Ok for my question, How has a spell that was meant to make an entire race more harmonious led to them becoming sterile. Is the magic acting like some form of radiation damaging the DNA strands? It seems rather abrupt considering its only been 25 generations. My guess it was targeted spell designed to impose purpous on each pony as they are concived. The true origin of cutiemarks. This has had an effect of diminishing returns as the spell weakens the reprodctive capabilities of each new generation.
But has it been affecting her and Luna?
7744316 In a few dozen generations, just think what could happen!
So what was this spell, exactly? She said "Harmony", so I assume it means the spell makes the entire species so homogenous that the birth rate slows to a complete crawl? Far as we know, 0 is the replacement rate. How long do regular ponies live, then?
Does the research team know the details?
Does it affect other species at all? Other types of pony? I doubt interspecies breeding is possible though, not like now fanarts show them, at least. No hippogriffs here. Else I'd have suggested changelings.[See Season 6 finale]
Can't Discord do anything? Obviously, yes, but it can't hurt to ask.
Trying to make things more harmonious isnt really an answer, unless she means that teh spell is trying to make everyone all the same, which given procreation works between two disparate genders would go to messing things up.
TL:DR The spell is making males and females the same, without making asexual reproduction possible in return?
Oh right, how long do ponies live? That's always a headcanon debate - we usually assume they have about a human lifespan, but you never know.
Crazy idea: have you tried time travel? Instead of kidnapping crazy extradimensional creatures, you could kidnap actual ponies! Who haven't had their reproductive spirit quelled yet. And who doesn't want to be teleported to the future, huh?
Okay, I think we can... take Celestia at her word. I don't know about trusting her: she hasn't demonstrated the most amazing decision-making skills, and I doubt she'd hesitate to manipulate or deceive us in any way for the sake of the greater good, but I can't really fault her for that.
She's also pretty guilty and scared, and disguising that behind pragmatism. Sure, "I need ponies to trust me so I can help them" sounds noble but... if they actually knew it was her fault it wouldn't change much. Justice isn't all about punishment, Princess. It's also about honesty and closure, and giving ponies the best tools to move forward with their lives. (Also Luna came back and was immediately installed as a diarch after being Nightmare Moon – I can't imagine the populace changing their stance on governmental corruption if that went through without question.)
The research teams know the true story at least, right? I can't exactly recall what Careful has mentioned, or what was said in front of her.
Hm.
Does Celestia understand this? I mean, we're a random alien dude. We may have some privileged knowledge about a few ponies' personal lives, the dozens of brains' worth of bad ideas, and functional sperm; but like, none of that actually elevates us past 'least qualified creature to deal with this'. If she can take this stance with us, why not her entire populace?
7744373
Alternate solution: alicornification and immortality en-masse.
Replace children with studding or by refined reproductive magics only rarely, to keep the population stable.
I think your speculation earlier about guilt is true, and we are easier to confide in than in the populace as a whole.
And it sounds like we're a rarity in the studs: we both had the moxie to press about this and genuinely cared about the population we are entering.
She's taking this chance to confide in someone and it's a step forward.
7744449 S'ok. This is a bit heavy for a clopfic.
Is it possible to undo it? And What would be the consequences if you did?
I miss Applejack.
started
7744240 Um G'day?
What about the crystal ponies? That seems like a good source for finding fertile ponies to assist Equestria with.
7744160
Then you would have been an utter monster. Who are you to play with life like that? What makes you, no less than fourteen or more than thirty-ish more wise and knowing than an immortal with more experience and knowledge than we can comprehend with our tiny minds?
With any trust in her gone, society breaks down, they won't be able to find a cure, and the pony species dies. Because of your thoughtless morals and need to get back at someone just because you have some harebrained problem with authority. Worst anon.
7744348
I imagine that with them being so peaceful, the lack of constant species-wide hardship and conflict sorta wilted their biological... biomagical? imperative and tools to continue the species. Could be something else entirely!
7744391
We're also relatively harmless, and might even be an asset in some way. An outsider's perspective, with a mind that could contain fresh possibilities and viewpoints.
As opposed to the ponies, whom she's led for at least a thousand, perhaps thousands of years and that she knows the minds and hearts of intimately. If she chooses not to tell them, it's because she knows the problems that will arise from doing so and that they're not going to help save everyone by having to deal with it right now.
Countless differing viewpoints all bickering and pointing... hooves, all wanting something different, all creating new problems where before there were none, blaming things not even remotely related on her mistake which... frankly, if it takes five hundred years to be a crisis, I can hardly blame even an immortal for not seeing it ahead of time. A single lone alien versus that. I'd have a candid chat with the alien who showed more curiosity and intelligence than others like him than my own people who'd just complicate things.
yeah. We need to know WHAT was done.
7744116 guys like this are who she ended lobotomizing.
Did you mean virile instead of vital?
7794673 Synonyms. Both would work.
