Just a relaxing stroll through the wilderness.
(Also, the Fallout: Equestria subreddit is doing their monthly voting to highlight another Fallout: Equestria side-story. If you like the story, feel free to vote for it!
Um,that is, if that's okay with you )
Another fantastic chapter! As always, you leave me craving more. I can't even begin to figure out what the alicorn wants, but I am excited to find out!
8156833 I really hope that they can make friends with the Alicorn, that would be awesome. also who knows she might have the spirit of the deceased Queen residing within her. or you know actually have a 'good' form of interest in the group.

I know I say this pretty frequently, but hopefully I'll have more soon. The next two chapters are pretty well along the way already. And hey, my classes are done in about 5 weeks, and then I'll have more free time over the summer. It's amazing how much free time classes eat up, especially when they're in the middle of what's usually my most productive writing time.
It's certainly getting interesting with that dangling thread, and i'm just waiting for when its the rock and the alicorn to choose from. But woohoo for the update!
am i the only one who thinks this alicorn COULD be twilight? a clone of twilight? the way she is described seems exactly like twilight, figuring out how everything works. still dont have any theories to why she is following out protagonists, though...
Now this is one hell of a story!
Dagnabbit, alicorn! Do something!
And so the Sickle,s love and sex story continues. Zebras are finally in the list, will alicorns join soon to it?
Stop teasing me with that damn Alicorn. I'm starting to side with Sickle here, just fucking talk to it already... preferably with Lancer and the minigun in flanking positions!
And here i thought they'd finally talk to her. Good initiative from Sickle.
Then again, her intentions are dubious...
Yesss
Yeesssss
/k/ would be proud.
I am slightly disappointed in Starlight and Whisper for going directly to the tops of hills to scout. You'd likely want to stop 20-30 feet short to avoid skylining yourself for everyone in the surrounding 10 miles. Guess I'll chalk it up to luck that it wasn't worse.
Wait, when did they get a crystal charger?
This shit is why I fucking love changeling stories gaaaah
Corrections:
Would probably be better as 'with good intentions' or 'for good reasons'.
Good shit, mate.
I feel bad for the alicorn. She's probably really bored. I wonder what her personality is. I wonder if she's just a 'kid'. Man, I know I'm reading heavily into it, but I can't shake this feeling of sorrow.
Bummer.

They've done just that on earlier occasions, for that very reason
Here, though, they're already fairly conspicuous with the small convoy of zebras, the area is pretty much devoid of life, the terrain is rather wide open, and they've got a reasonably armored vehicle that probably outguns any raiders they might come across. Overall, they're not terribly worried about hostilities or remaining hidden. Dusty's cautious enough to keep someone looking out, but he also recognizes the danger of mental burn-out from running 100% all the time. Sometimes it's better to let people unwind in the less dangerous times, especially after about two weeks of high-stress travel through those swamps.
Starlight's had that since before she came into the story, though I'll admit, it's barely been mentioned directly and not for a good while, now. It's been sitting in her bags; every time she's swapping out a crystal, she's trading it for one in the charger. It's basically just a way of taking the energy from spark batteries and putting it into the crystals where it's ready to use.
I have to say Im a little disappointed there wasn´t more going on with the zebras.
So the group went into a really dangerous swamp many ponies didnt return from.
They meet a group of zebras who are struggling with their supplies but share it anyway despite having no particular reason to trust the group.
Said Zebras proclaim that they live by the philosophy of peace and hugs and ultimate niceness
They tell the group about this other warlike group of zebras. The group never hears a different perspective on this, but they go in, kill a few of them and steal some records. They didnt learn anything else about the "bad zebras"
They decide the good zebras need to leave, so they go through the swamp, where one (or more) of them dies and no tension arises from that at all.
Then they arrive and the zebras are grateful and nothing bad happens.
Since they stumbled into the zebra camp I expected something horrible to be uncovered and then... nothing
8160032 who knows, maybe it's a setup for a later part in the story. With the Zebras now living in marefort the doors may be open for a redemption story.
Maybe the zebras convince the citizens of marefort to help our group.
Maybe the evil zebras decided to follow them and our heroes have to defend the city from them.
Or maybe there's a secret evil zebra among the group and he helps them infiltrate the city, thereby gaining access to their amory and making them an even bigger threat in the future.
Point is just because nothing important has happened quite yet doesn't mean there can't be happening anything in the future.
Edit: concerning the possible traitor thing... maybe it's bloodbeak? Using an supposed injury sustained by an enemy to gain the tribe's trust while secretly feeding info to the enemy? Her role as outlook also would have allowed her to easier convey messages than most. And she was awfully curious about all the defence capabilities of the motorwagon and the area, even using the excuse for wanting to fly again to get a good view from up high and map out the area. Hmmm....
Great chapter, though, I was honestly expecting for more of the zebras to die in the swamp or even for the Legion to attack them, but I'm fine with how it turned out. Would have been terribly depressing otherwise. I really hope to find out what that alicorn is all about, but until we do I'm calling her "Chekhov".
On a separate note, this story has actually inspired me to write some a fic of my own. It's slow going, but I just thought I'd thank you for being an inspiration. Keep up the good work!
Oh come on dusty! Give sparklecorn a chance!
Best chapter yet. Hooves down.
Midway of the chapter I realised... The alicorn actually is guarding the crew. I belive the alicorns are aware of Changelings ...or at least this one recognised Whisper and is curious abaut her. In the first case Alicorns beeing at a silent war with the bugs might mean they observe to determine if she is suitable for recruitment. This perticular one however seems to run on a ressurection autopilot but I don't really belive it. It's like she's searching for something in the bodies she put back together. A mark or maybe a specyfic pony they would recognize after the body is dead.
But that doesn't make sence. How can she be looking for something actively while still guarding the heroes. Unless she searches for ...Starlight.
The other thing: I would really love to see Sicle if she was fully healed and her body was made normal. Her reaction is impossible to predict but all options are amazing. I personally would vote for a tear breakdown and swearing ethernal love for Dusty.

Actually i found the whole swamp story amusing, because it reminded me of those times in an RPG when you go to an area you haven't been to and realize you should have been there a while ago and everything is 20 levels below you. So you just go in and faceroll the whole section with no issues.

Hey, good to hear! I hope you have luck with it. Writing can be a lot of fun
Love this story! Changeling stories exploring the trials they regularly face has been a favorite theme of mine for some time.
This is irritating, I finish a chapter and then I have nothing else to read! I'm just grateful the chapters are nice and long.
will you just talk to big purple already
Just talk to it already, jeez.
Just to point it out, you have 22 votes on your story. That is first place. Woot woot!

I don't think you understand Sickle, she's not mean because she's ugly, she's ugly because she's mean.
8181327 It seemed funny to imagine something like that. And was funny just for this reason alone...
8180880
Holy crap, that's a lot of votes. Thanks, everyone!
8161559 you do know this takes place after foe right?, whisper waking up was due to a broken SPP tower trying to power up and exploding. and having a chuck land on the generator to her pod.
my point being that the ailcorn is free, the goddess is dead. so there is no "plan" or-so.
i think it's a changeling that knows whisper and it trying to figure out how to say hi.
8189256 Still, remember that the alicorns were once controlled by the Godess and the moment they were freed some might become highly funcional maniacs.
Think abaut it. Rescenty created alicorns still had a shadow of their old personality. I can imagine a group of the oldest alicorns simply continuing doing some of their things because thtwhere the only things they knew how to do - even to the point of forgetting how to think.
Nice chapter as always. Can't wait for the next one.
I think the Alicorn is either looking for something or someone and feels their group will help lead her on to said target.
Another idea is that the Alicorn sees Whisper and Starlight as her "parents" and as a an Alicorn is to terrified to meet them.
Or varying on Starlight Glimmer being canon in FOE in some regard, the Alicorn at some point picked up on this Starlight's name thus has been following her due to a familiarity in name.
Poor(?) maybe-twilight, she just wants a friend.
She’s just standing there! Menacingly!
Definitely thinking the alicorn's gross disemboweling thing was trying to put that pony back together.
Not...sure enough to risk it myself. But thinking that.
I'm beginning to think that alicorn may be a bit mindless.
remember how after the Goddesses death they kinda just...turned into placebos?
I think this alicorn is more idly wondering about them then any kind of hostile intentions.
Ahh. That explains why she wasn't worried about the Legion looking at the air.
Ah, very good point
Sickle style: plodding on not giving a damn.
Well, you kind of have
It would be easier to just use your, ehm, night vision eyes... though that may be hard to explain to the rescuee.
Yeeah... that's usually one of the last things to stop working
Welp, looks like she's teaching them well.
Not to be insensitive to the poor guy, but... they do splatter so nicely after they've fed
Pile on the car! Indian public transportation style!
Hah
Can't fault her logic... though her methods, as usual, are as blunt as a club
Yeah, she's a little light in the darkness. I hope she lives...
Ah, dammit. That gorram crazy alicorn
Haha. Who says Sickle doesn't do tactics?
Anatomy 101? Seeing what makes ponies tick?
Maybe the alicorn lady is aspiring to be a doctor!
Ah yes, that little detail
Well, that's... mighty brave of him
Ah yes. They're no longer travelling at foot pace... distances just got a lot shorter.
Uh-oh
Dammit, I was curious how that'd turn out. If Sickle wants to mess around with the alicorn, let her!
8297560
Hahaha, that is exactly what I was thinking when j read that part
(Technically I was thinking 'Weeeeee wooooo' then that, but close enough)
So way back when the alicorn first appeared, odd thing: " don't know what would have happened if I had {shot it} then", so obviously it does something big later.
Then when it dissected and repaired the dead raider my first thought was "oh my God, she's trying to make friends."
Now it calmly accepts invitations. I say calmly because someone said the purple ones are teleport specialists? She coulda been there in a moment, and she glided down.
Probably one of the most tantalizing plot threads in the fic for me right now.
Also, Emerald's death and reveal made me a bit salty. that almost never happens for me, so good job.
At this point, I highly doubt that the Alicorn has any immediately malevolent intentions to our group.
Granted, I would keep my distance like they are doing. Not because of fear, but because it would be stupid to get that close to something that deadly without clear intentions.
Damnit I want to see the alicorn. I think she really just wants to talk to someone but is kinda to dumb to realize putting people back together doesn’t make them alive again.
Any unknown alicorn would freak me out and make me keep my distance as far away as possible.
I wonder if changelings can become alicorns.
So... I really hate bringing this topic up since it is a really really boring topic that can be solved with handwaveium quite easily... but how much ammo does Starlight have for her lancer, because the only time I remember her counting her gems did she have like a hooffull, and can't remember her stocking up, even if she most likely would at the first big payout, and she have been shooting her big ZOOORP stick quite often. Again not really something important, just od that the others are counting how many clips and magazines they have, where Starlight seemingly have unlimited specialized gemstones.

It's never clearly specified in the story, but basically, it kiiiinda works like her recharger. Kinda.
She's only got five of those special crystals. When she reloads, she's swapping the discharged one with one from the charging pack. The charging pack has a spark battery that recharges the crystals (It takes a good ten or so seconds and is pretty efficient, but still only holds enough of a charge for maybe 10-20 more recharges). It's also got a mini-spark-generator like in her recharger that sloooowly recharges it all. I never actually specified an exact rate, but if I had to come up with a rate, probably only a couple of shots per hour. She could swap out the spark battery in her charge pack if she can't wait for the slow recharge, but it's kind of slow and awkward and not something she does. So she can get a good number of shots out in a fight, but then it's done for a while. Great for a hunting or sniping weapon, but not for sustained fire or a general firefight.
Basically, her weapons are the repeater pistol and repeater rifle from New Vegas, just with the rifle turned from a semi-automatic rifle into a single-fire sniper.
I predict Mareford becoming an ally and helping with the Serenity boss fight. All thanks to some thankful zebras.
I had fun thinking about what tribe might the zebras be from. The closest one i can think of is the Zencori, a tribe focus around passing knowledge through stories. Not exactly a hit, but the most accurate miss. I am talking about Somber's Project Horizons /Homelands lore.
I have been wondering for some time now if Whisper is going to become a changeling queen at the end of the book. You have interesting changeling mechanics. I love changeling stories, exactly for that. I have not read a fic where changelings bled normal pony blood. Great story, makes up for the less exciting start.
