nice story but the ending is rather sudden
are you going to write a sequel?

@Snowfyre: I'll consider writing a sequel if enough people want one.

Impressions of Chapters 1 and 2:

There's a lot of excessive exposition and overly verbose establishment of premise. A lot of the dialog is circumlocutory, and the allegory of each setting (establishing the background as a character) is either ham-fisted or unnecessarily stated at multiple points in the narrative. Some may like this style, but I personally despise unnecessary prolixity. I find myself subconsciously simplifying as I read.

The core story itself is compelling, though, which is key. Once you trim the fat around the setting and characters, both are also very creative.

In summary: Though I have some issues with how you are conveying it, I still like the story. :ajsmug:

904203 WRITE THE SQUEAL DAMN IT I WANT IT

Wow, just wow. That was seriously getting good. Why did you end it there? So much potential for more chapters or a sequel. Awesome fic.

Thanks! Since I made this almost four years ago, this really takes me back. I had planned to write more of it before my story Queen No More got sequel requests, prompting me to write Hive Alive first after finishing Bullets of Fire. I would like to get around to writing a sequel someday but I'm not sure when. (My writing schedule is booked tight at the moment.)

6924181 trust me I understand, my life has gotten in the way of mine. I'm reading bullets of fire right now actually lol. I like your work, it's definitely a different drink of water compared to most stories I read on here.

6928174 Well thanks. And happy reading. :raritystarry:

Lifeline held out his right hoof. "Yeah, let's shake on it and have some fun. After all, if life is work then why not enjoy it?"

Lifeline ❤

“Why shouldn’t I be?! Everybody deals with garbage! Maybe my positive outlook can make someone smile for a change! And - disclaimer - that’s straight out of Lifeline’s quote book!!”

I knew it! ❤ always good to have a few quotes prepared.

It was the perfect opportunity to “buy smiley points” as Lifeline put it.

Buy smiley point, I wish this worked. :)

It was boarding time and they had rushed to get to the terminal in time. Lifeline had miscalculated the distance to their gateway and almost panicked when he failed to find their boarding passes. He eventually found them, though, and passed them to the attendant.

Every time I go flying I have mini panic attacks that this will happen. XD

Lifeline continued, “I know few ponies ever have friends now - at least in real life. Everything being masked and controlled on the ‘Net...it’s hard to tell if the other pony is being sincere.”

For a 2012 story, the story feels far more applicable in 2021.

“I understand but I have a question now. Do you think friendship is earned or given?”

I think it's both and neither. The best friends/relationships in my life have never seemed to correlate to the effort I put forward. Same is true in reverse that I am not specifically drawn to extra friendly or outgoing people. Certainly my most cherished friends are those with some ratio of both (earned and given). But it's not a good test of the quality of the friendship.

I feel like lady luck or the god of happenstance is where friendships can sprout. A collection of factors outside of the control of both parties that kick off the relationship. The "Magic" that propells two friendly individuals to be more than friendly strangers.

P.S. I am surprised that BlackWater's first fanfic has soo many interesting ideas. It's bursting with thoughtful writing. Very impressive. 👍

“Alright!” So I’m ending it right now. Princess, you are now my friend. Lifeline, you too. I don’t care about anything bad that’s happened before or might happen in the future. I’m making you both my friends right here and now.”

After a near 2 hour discussion with friends over the topic. I agree with the conclusion. Ultimately friendship is a choice (ie is given) to give and does not actually require a second conscious or aware person. As such, the concept of earning friendship is irrelevant. Friendship is more an internalized declarative state of relation and intent.

A good example of this is the portal 1 companion cube. Most players drclare it as a friend even if it itself does nothing to earn it. It is no better a cube than others. it has no quality other than it's name. Yet, people befriend it and are sorrowful upon it's demise. RIP my friend.

Going into this story without the discussion and thought I was thinking friendship must be two ways. But there are too many counter examples IRL that come to mind.

However, I would say that most all healthy and mutually beneficial friendships are two way roads in which both parties give freely. This muddied the earning friendship bit, but is a secondary attribute/explanation to the dynamics of friendship.

Friendship is Magic
Thanks for writing. Really great story!
