Thanks to Rainbow Dash, winter has arrived early in Ponyville, leaving the Apple family woefully unprepared.

As a long and busy day of harvesting apples draws to a close, Applejack soon finds that a certain somepony has made her barn a home for the winter...

Applejack flees before the spectre of death, taking up writing as solace and succor. In the process, time moves on around her, and wounds heal. While the Apple family struggle with a death, Applejack writes a novel.

"It's no secret that Applejack and I are really cool friends, but nopony really knows how I feel about her. Her awesome blonde hair, those powerful legs that won't quit, that amazing smile, all wrapped up underneath her trademark cowpony hat.

Urgh! I've had it! I've just gotta tell her how she makes me feel!

I just hope she takes me seriously for once..."

As it turns out, the answer to that question may not be a pleasant one, but something good may yet come of it.

After Twilight delivers a batch of books to Sweet Apple Acres as a gesture of goodwill, she finds that one member of the Apple Family is not interested in her offerings. Through her efforts to discover why, she inadvertently discovers Big Macintosh's most shameful secret.

The talented Ponychan /art/ denizen Spirit Shine provided us with a beautifully poignant portrait of Spike's First New Year's Alone as a picture prompt (also: was gracious enough to let me use the image as a cover). I ran with it and decided to have Applejack kill Spike.
