Goddamn. Talk about powerful.

This hit REAL hard. Well done man. Well done.

~Skeeter The Lurker

It's really nice to see you writing again with such fervour, Cyne. ^_^
Good job with this short story, nice and pleasant. And keep going! Yay!

And yes. I realise I used the word 'pleasant' for [spoilers] but... it really IS, though.

At first, I thought maybe it had been Big Mac that had passed on...

Excellent story. Full of well written feels. It's earned an upvote and a fave from me.

That is it. That is how you end a story. This is how a story of its kind should be done.

The way it was written was almost poetic. The use of short-stopping sentences combined with first person narration and present tense managed to perfectly compare the mood of the story. Tired, and cathartic. This was good. This was really good, much better than This is a Story you will Never Read. The jump between her letter with Mac and her interactions with Applebloom and Twilight added to everything so perfectly. The sharp endings to scenes left a blunt mark in my mind every time, drawing me in to read more.

You once said to RBDash47 that you wanted to display catharsis and loneliness -- you've done it. Loneliness in the presence of others, self-awareness and the attempt to better yourself. There is so much in this story, and it all comes down to one line. One line you said and one moral that so perfectly derives every feeling and thought you've conveyed.

"Not all who wander are lost. I'm not lost, I'm just waiting until I'm right."

wow that was very very lovely

Nice story, starts a little confusing, but that just seemed to make me pay closer attention to the story. Well hopefully either :twilightblush: knows reproductive spells or :applecry: is straight or it is the end of sweet apple acres due to lack of foals.

What do you mean when you say "Applejack struggles with death"? I'm sorry, that wasn't funny.

I used to listen to a lot of This American Life when it wasn't election season, and my personal draw to it was the narrative. There's a podcast called Wiretap (somewhat of a nephew to This American Life) that in telling basically concludes that the human experience is telling what you know so you aren't alone in it. One episode featured a woman who joined a writing class, for the sole purpose of having her romantic situation analyzed as a plot and how to conclude it. The ploy collapses upon itself when the sole focus of her classmates was how poorly she wrote it, and she is left with blue balls.

I recognize a lot of your personality in Applejack (beyond ethnicity) that you channeled to an experience she was put through, turning into my favorite kind of narrative: the seeking. It gives the reader the purpose the protagonist ignored in its application, but rediscovered through effect.

Anyway, you did an okay job.

Nope, that wasn't funny at all, gosh darn it.

Sweet little story. Minimal, understated. Nice.

Oh, you being you. Well done again, this and the last one. A treat as always.

And then Twilight Criticized the fuck out of it! :trollestia:

2875761 Yay! I'm back.

2875835 It was him... and then it was Twilight. And then Rarity. And then Granny. I changed my mind a lot.

2875849 I thank Tolkien, but really I thank RazedRainbow.

2875892 Heh. You know, I actually wrote a story 'bout that.

And I don't like the idea of reproductive spells, which I think is part of why AJ was weird about Mac's relationship at first. She thought of it too. I think Applebloom'll have a clutch of chilluns

2875908 I thought about being meta and naming her novel "When the Levee Breaks" but I didn't. Because when I hid from my grandmother's passing, that's what I was working on.

2876098 I'm glad you liked it!

2876565 Absolutely.

I'll never understand your ability to consistently make a deep, wonderful story, no matter the subject matter or length.

Don't you ever stop.

2877570

In fact, that line did just make me start reading that story right after I got done yours. On C5 of it now.

2878078 I love it. I was heartbroken when I couldn't help Razed with the recent ones

2878137 Now I know!

Very interesting. I know people who do things to make them forget about death, but novel writing has always seemed the most difficult to me. Though really, to each their own. :raritywink:

I do like how minimal it is. I dunno. It definitely feels like letters that AJ would write: simple(-ish), with something more profound and honest in the background. :ajsmug:

Author's Note:

stuff and things

Yeah, stuff and things.

2880199 by the time I finished this I was so bleh about it, for reals.

Aw well

things and stuff!

2882650 STUFF AND THINGS ;D

our house is just so quiet, Applejack.”
I don’t rightly know what to say about that.

And that, right there, is the problem.

I really enjoyed this. A good take on a way to deal with pain. Although, certain things could be clearer: like what happened to Big Mac and who or who isn't dead.

2884408 he's on his honeymoon with Caramel.
Granny is dead!

2884408

The idea is that we try and figure it out.

Assuming I'm not crazy, granny smith died, although I don't know why applejack thinks applebloom thinks she could have stopped it, and big mac moved to vanhoover with caramel and applejack is writing him letters.

2891559 I get figuring it out, but some parts were just too vague. I thought at one point that Twilight had died and that Applejack was on her way too.

Very nicely done. I'm a sucker for a Tolkien reference.
A couple of nitpicks:
hoofull => hooffull
’round rather than ‘round or 'round (this is a pet peeve of mine)
deep breathe => deep breath

What a pervasive bittersweet. A most delightful taste.
This is a really good Applejack, by the way. What lovely characterisation.

I always loved how you wrote AJ.
