Beat and her apprentices live a precarious life. The Everfree Forest is no place for a pony. But they were Chosen for this destiny, and they've all had their share of dark times. In order to survive, they had to lie, cheat, steal, and even kill. But now, they've got each other. They've found family.
Still, there are always secrets. Things nopony should ever know about them. Things they'd like to forget, but wouldn't trade for the world itself. Shadow, one of the apprentices, has such secrets. It's been years, but the memories are fresh. They circle in her head, constantly reminding her that she can never be a part of this family.
One day, she convinces the others to come out of the shadows. With that choice, she sends them hurtling into a whole new realm of adventure, one somehow more sinister than the one they left behind...
