The Day of the Dead Anthology

The Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a now-famous tradition from ancient times that has been a huge part of Mexican Culture through the centuries. Like so many things in Mexico, it's influenced strongly by certain aspects of the Aztec people.

It has shaped the way those of us with that heritage look at life and death in many ways, and most importantly on the remembrance of, and honoring the deceased. We traditionally decorate little altars dedicated to the memories of those that passed away… but it's not a somber occasion.

PSA: Using AIs to Write and Publish Stories in Fimfiction

Hello everyone, this is a PSA (Public Service Announcement, for those of ESL) to put to rest consistent questions about using AI to 'write' stories and publish them here. This is not intended as a poll or a request for feedback. It is exclusively a clarification on an already-existing rule.

People ask: "Can I, oh great and powerful D, post a story or chapter that I got ChatGPT to write for me?!"

And the answer, my friend, is... No.

Absolutely not. Not in a thousand years!

    Because you didn't write it.

It is not your creation. You are NOT the author. In fact, you are the opposite.

There seems to be some confusion when interpreting the following rule:

    Don’t Post (Content)

    Phishing Awareness

Have you ever found yourself in a situation like this?

And then you magically find yourself in a suspiciously familiar site, except that you're not logged in, and it requires you to do so?

Well. Don't log in. This is a scam, and a cheap one at that.

There've been recent attempts to obtain Fimfiction users’ personal data, like passwords and/or emails through links like the one I'm making fun of above. And a distressing amount of people don't seem to know what phishing attempts are.

If you HAVE entered a site like this and put in your data, make sure to follow these basic steps at least.

All Our Best [Royal Canterlot Library]

As should be obvious from 15 months without a feature, life has taken the Royal Canterlot Library curators in different directions. While there’s still plenty of awesome stories being written in the My Little Pony fandom, we’re no longer actively working to spotlight them, and it’s time to officially draw the project to a close.

Thank you for all of your support, suggestions, and comments over the years. We’re grateful to have been able to share seven years of exemplary stories with you, and give more insight into the minds behind them. In the spirit of the project, please keep reading and recommending fantastic fics to friends—the community is enriched when we all share what we love.

    Reunions: A Swapped Roles Contest!

Okay guys here's something fun presented by Nitro Indigo.

Presented by me, I guess, but I digress.

Last year, I (Nitro Indigo) noticed that there was a surprising lack of roleswap fanfics on this site. To fix that, I decided to run a roleswap contest over the summer themed around secrets. While it didn’t get many entries, it nevertheless attracted the attention of some big authors and was the origin of two of my favourite fics. Overall, I think it was a success, so I’ve decided to run another one!

    Minor Rules and Reporting Update

Hope everyone is enjoying the new year.

Some small changes have been made to our rules as well as to the reporting process.

    Rules

"No attacks directed at individuals or groups due to race, gender, gender identity, religion or sexual identity."

This better clarifies our previously ill-defined hate speech rule and includes groups as well as individual attacks.

"No celebration, glorification or encouragement of real life criminal activity."

This includes past, present and potential future crimes.

    Jinglemas 2019

There's truly no time like the holidays. What's better than copious amounts of food, quality time with family and friends, hearing the sweet sound of Trans-Siberian Orchestra on repeat, and unmanagble financial stress from our capitalist overlords?

    Gift exchanges of course!

Site Post » New User Module, Character Changes & Banner Reset · 6:12am Dec 24th, 2013

I've added a new module to user pages for favourites. Unlike the favourites gallery, this is all of your favourites and you can order them by rating or date added and hide mature stories should you wish. It shows up like the latest stories module.

Also, characters have been changed a bit now so they don't load from a cache which means we have names on hover overs of character icons and you can click them to search by them! Only took 2 years to sort that issue....

And finally, I added a reset banner button next to the source link to reset your banner selection if you want random banners again.

ALSO IT'S CHRISTMAS SOON WOO.

Edit: Any comments about user pages will be deleted. Keep it to the other posts if you want to complain

Many people probably came here hoping the user pages got reverted :rainbowlaugh:

Ooo, they finally have names pop up!

THAT is nice to finally see.

Been a busy month for you, hasn't it?

Take a break, man!

The pages are fine. People were just sudden change shock. They didn't go and move things around.

It really is Christmas; Knighty keeps giving out presents! :raritywink:

Oh my god the new banner is absolutely delightful

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee~!

Oh hey, a small thing I noted:

gyazo.com/c2d3c4b790907785923083ea2b0c8519.png

The watching module button has a broken image for me. Not sure why.

Using Chromium, if that helps any.

~Skeeter The Lurker

Just curious, will we be able to choose backgrounds for FiMFic again? Like the themes? I really miss that.

But anyways, thanks for the new layout, it looks great! Merry almost Christmas, kniggy :rainbowkiss:

All positive changes imo, Merry Christmas everyone! :yay:

Let's see how many comments get deleted.
Already at: 1.

1641727 You bet I did. but as long as were stuck with the crappy new ones, I suppose it's a good thing their already improving them, so the suck is of lesser quality.

Merry Christmas, knighty! Ya fag.
Love, Armalite.

Oh, more upgrades! :pinkiehappy:

Can we get a filter that lets you choose multiple ratings? Example: Both Teen and Mature but Not Everyone. :scootangel:

I like the favorites box. But I miss the old words read counter...

I've been looking forward to the character name fix! It helps especially when that one story gets you in a character mood.:yay:

Um, what about comments about the new Favorites module on the user pages?

Anyway, I suppose these are all nice minor changes to the site. Fixing the character tag icons on stories was a good thing, and I think the Reset Selection button for banners will be a nice touch for those interested.

But I don't think the new Favorites module will be of any real use to anyone. Unfortunately, the Favorites feature is still designed for people to track stories and isn't a true reflection of what a user's favorite stories are. With that said, it doesn't really accomplish anything that the Favorites button on the dashboard didn't already do. Not only that, but unless a user makes a point of only Favoriting their favorite stories (and using the less reliable Read Later feature to track ongoing stories), you're basically just making a cluttered list of hundreds, if not thousands, of stories to scroll through.

1641797 The favourites modules isn't there for you. They're to show off your favourites to other people. And yes, obviously you're allowed to comment on that module. I just don't want people cluttering up another blog post with whining which detracts from chat about the actual blog post here.

Edit: Any comments about user pages will be deleted. Keep it to the other posts if you want to complain

21 comments and this edit pops up.

That's GOT to be a record...

Merry Christmas Eve, Knighty! (The issuer of this greeting cannot verify in any fashion whether or not it is December 24th at the recipient's location, but can and does endorse the opinion that it is Christmas Eve where the sender currently abides. The sender is not The Dude)

That picture reminds me, would it be possible to update that Luna picture? Its wierd seeing her depressed all the time.

This feels weird. I can't actually think of anything to complain about for this update. You're up to something...

1641797

Unfortunately, the Favorites feature is still designed for people to track stories and isn't a true reflection of what a user's favorite stories are.

This is a very good point. I know that my current "favorites" list would be a lot smaller if the Favorites feature actually depicted my favorite stories on the site.

Hooray, I actually like these updates, thanks Knighty. All I need now is words read counter and maybe what the gentlemen above me were talking about.

Christmas!

WOOO! :pinkiehappy:

These updates are okay. They're small improvements, but good ones.:pinkiehappy:

So, question about the meta fic thing from awhile ago.

Are meta fics allowed?

I's either tomorrow or the day after that.
Then the opening of gifts shall leave a mess in the living room!

It's supposed to be like the browser definition of "Favorites".

1641723
Irrelevant post is irrelevant

You done good Knighty. :yay:

1641723

What happened?

Reset banners and names on the character as well as search the ones we click... I wanted those since I first joined around an year ago, awesome! :rainbowkiss:

Is it a problem if I say that the reset banner doesn't work? I've tried clicking it but my banner is still the one I selected.

1641908 Refresh the page

1641835

I miss 'tracking'. Apparently no one used it right and knighty got annoyed. But I still miss it.

1641877 Just to clarify, by "browser definition of 'favorites'", you are talking about "bookmarks" on browsers like Chrome and Firefox, right?

1641910
I've done that. It didn't change. If I look at my cookies, the selected_theme is still set.

Edit: Since I'm here. I've noticed since I changed my name that button on the nav bar gets a bit messed up for people with longer names. The items on its drop down are smaller than the button itself.

It's a pretty easy fix. I just did this with the css.

.menu_list .button,
.menu_list .user_drop_down_menu {
width: 100%;
min-width: 150px;
}

That will allow them to become as wide as they need to be but keep them from becoming thinner than they should be.

I like the changes. Messed with the Favorites module a bit, nice addition, although I don't personally plan on using it. It's definitely an interesting add though, let's you see what others are reading now without having to actually click on their favorites selection.

I really like the banner options

1641910 Hey, would it be a bother to ask for new emotes like Luna? or change the ones that look the exact same?
That would be so cool :rainbowdetermined2:

Tried the faves list. It's a nice addition but I would more likely use it if there was an option to only show the ones with unread chapters.

--Sollace

1642013 Again, the module is not for you to USE, it's to show stuff to other people like everything else on the user page.

1642017
And if I want to show people what I'm going to be reading?

--Sollace

knighty

1642025 Then....you're a very weird use case?

Meh, if people want to see my favorites, they can click on the button to see them. I've got enough crap on my user page people have to scroll through.

The new 'favorites' bar seems pretty weird. What if you wanted to sort them by value of reading? ...Or you have your own sorting system you would use in your own personal library? What then?
