Why isn't starswirl reacting to the fact that Twilight is an alicorn?

At first, I thought he should show more surprise at the situation given an alicorn and a baby dragon arrived at his doorstep but I wanted him to mistake her for Luna at first. But alicorns themselves I figure shouldn't be as much of a surprise because we've seen Cadance appear in things before, also Star Swirl has spent a good deal of time with the royal family so it's likely he wouldn't be as surprised. While he would come to the conclusion that they would be from Canterlot, it's not likely he would be astonished by the situation as much. Also, Twilight explained the situation to him so it's likely once he realized it wasn't Luna, any confusion he felt would be alleviated at least slightly. So there's a couple reasons he wouldn't be completely surprised by the supposedly random visit. Baby dragon on the other hand, I don't know for sure if that would be surprising or not so I went with not.
I can't press the reply button on my ipod. In response to your answer, I would think that all alicorns would be known and that seeing an unknown alicorn would be extremely unusual. With Cadance, just because the viewer does not know of her does not mean the average character does not.
2210374I'm not entirely sure about all alicorns being known, the origins of the "4th tribe" elude me. Twilight and her friends didn't know unicorns could become alicorns so it doesn't seem like a natural occourence or evolution to me. Twilight's case was most likely special and I'm guessing alicorns are a different species all together.

Seems kind of lame and why/how did he show up just now? I'd like to think that as a decent mage, he'd realize that there must be more to it than just completing a spell. Why the heck didn't he just up and admit his identity? Why didn't Twilight recognize him or at least wonder?
Maybe he did some very wonky time travel, but this pony seems kinda paper thin and immature. He comes across as a modern imposter rather than a genuine pony who's certainly a couple hundred years old and presumably dead by now.
