When Twilight has to tell Rarity that there may be romance afoot, I feel like something’s gone awry with the characterization.
An epistolary story is a good way to compress the word count, and I really like the “D” theme in the minichapters, but this still felt less like a romance and more like a parasite hijacked Fluttershy and wants to spread to fashionistas. It’s the sudden swerve that really kills it for me. If this had been slowly building since before the story began and Fluttershy could only now admit even it to her own diary, it would’ve felt a lot more organic. (And again, Twilight “Social Awareness of a Bucket of Paint” Sparkle should not have to tell Rarity that somepony is in love with her.)
In all, a noble effort, but the “I suddenly have deeper feelings for this lifelong friend” approach to shipping never rings true for me. Still, thank you for the entry.
