ya i can't even figure out just when the custodies were made, some bits of pre-30k stuff say they were made sometime very shortly after the thunder warriors, some bits say they were there from the start with them, some pieces say they were there before he even made the thunder warriors which would mean they come from the dark age of tech and that's kind of a big inconsistency because of how powerful a custodies is in 40k let alone eons before that. they're what the astarties are supposed to be, they have absolutely perfect gene seed

That's because the Astartes are more or less mass produced, whereas each of the Custodes are an individually crafted work of art. That and Big E was kinda a shit dad, what with how he treated the primarchs and the Sensei(if you you consider that bit of old lore still canon), and that he was a brutal tyrant in life and not much better in his living death.

That's the fun and the modus operandi of 40k. It's a dark age where all knowledge is speculation at best and all information is suspect. It let's then retcon or contradict at will and that's part of the fun.

that and its got some really great fiction writers. I tend to stay out of the horus heresy stuff but there's plenty of 40k series that are amazing reads from Ciaphas Caine to Gaunts Ghosts to the Watchers of the Throne
