Personally I never liked spike crush on rarity considering she not only too old for him but outside friendship she never noticed him. It was something that the creators should have nipped in the bud.

I base Spike's age off the flashback where it shows Twilight(estimated between 6-9yo) hatching Spike(estimated 1-4). It's never mentioned how long he was in the egg. Or how different dragons age compared to ponies. So at best the girls see him as a kid(compared to other dragons) while he's closer to their age(pony age). While Rarity may have treated him in questionable manners. RD treated him more like an equal.(heck AJ and Pinkie would be better ships) but if I ever ship Spike and Rarity... I'd give them a far better reason than a simple crush.(Like Bride of Discord did for the AppleSpike ship)
