Nice bit of development and closure on Cozy's part here, although one has to wonder why they didn't question weather or not the filly who had the same colors and everything of the filly that Shining saved back in the day wasn't that same filly. Either way, Cozy seems to be extremely mature for her age.

Just because we never saw the trial doesn't mean it never happened. Not everything happened on the screen in the show and also...why would I be offended? that's 100% true. The trial is for that sole purpose. It's an alt-universe. No reason not to add whatever I feel to carry the story.
Though if you are referring to the end: that's not a trial. That's an adoption hearing.
This is the only reference to the trial. So yes, it was added purely for theatrics.
Technically she was aided and abated, and later coerced by Discord. Though I imagine that in addition to the trial, is also different in this universe.
