The Wonderbolts are a famous stunt organisation, but not many know of their secondary function - the second most advanced military force in Equestria.
When an unknown threat arises that could not only reveal this secret to the public, but also wipe the Wonderbolts out and pave the way for an invasion of Equestria, Princess Luna sends out her secret military project - the Ghost Squad, led by her personal protégé - to deal with them
However, there's more to this threat than any could have known, and Luna may have just put her protégé and his squad in serious danger...

If that's true, then why couldn't they save Rarity? Why did Spitfire betray Soarin? Why couldn't they beat Spike or Tirek?

This is set in a different universe so in this one the Wonderbolts are actually adequate and not completely useless, hence the alt. universe tag lol
But let's say the events you mentioned happened in this universe. The Wonderbolts would just have wanted to be seen publicly as a stunt group (saving Rarity, Spitfire betraying Soarin) and not blow their cover (want to be seen as normal ponies yadda yadda if you get what I mean), and in the Spike and Tirek cases, well, they would have been able to contain Spike until he shrunk back to size, but Tirek eats up magic and all, so probably the best they could do would be to keep him occupied until the elements came.
If you want me to elaborate on the wanting to be seen as normal ponies bit, then you'll unfortunately have to give me a little bit of time to think about it, you kind of put me on the spot
EDIT: Rarity would have been saved. That was idiotic of me to say that they would play dumb and leave Rarity to fall to her death because “wE’rE a sTuNt gROuP”.
