War is a terrible thing. Whether you are actually fighting or not, it affects us all. Many never realize what is happening to them, but some do, and Pinkie Pie is one of them. For too long she has watched as the war has slowly drained Equestria's citizens of their hope and joy, and she cannot sit by any longer. It's time for Pinkie to stand up and fight, to save the hearts and hopes of the people before they are gone forever, even if she has to do it alone.

4850951 It isn't really specified. Just some unknown enemy force that was threatening Equestria. Perhaps a Griffon and Zebra alliance. Like I said in the authors note, this was inspired by a piece of artwork done by FoxInShadow. The physical war wasn't the focus of the story, it was simply a means to help set up the scenario that had sprung into my head.
I don't know if this will help make it any clearer, but here's what was going through my head when I saw the picture. "Why is Twilight wearing armor? Maybe there was some sort of war? But Pinkie appears dead, so maybe she died in or around this war, since Twilight was still in her armor? But I don't think Pinkie would ever willingly take part in a war. Killing, let alone physical violence, just doesn't seem like something she would be a part of. Maybe she was involved in another way?..." And it just kinda went on from there.
I seem to have wandered off topic a bit, but I hope I was able to help you understand it a little better.

If you enjoy war stories, I suggest you keep an eye on my current project "The Legends of Lore". It may not look like it now from the first two chapters, but the final piece is planned as an epic fantasy adventure revolving around a shadow war. Kinda Lord of The Rings-ques, but of my own design and a fair bit of humor. It's kinda hard to describe to be honest.

If it helps, just assume it was some sort of Griffon and Zebra alliance, as I was leaning that way. As for actually writing a prequel to this, I'll have to add it to my list. Right now I'm working on my new project "The Legends of Lore", and that story has its own war for me to think about, so it might be a while before I get some free time to put any thought into this prequel idea of yours.
