I haven't done any quality research on the topic myself, but I've noticed that fanfics here (when relevant) near universally choose one of two numbers unless they have reason not to: 11 months because ponies, or 9 months because humans and they don't necessarily know better or just want to anthropomorphise ponies more than they are.

Also, and this could just be me, I am see some problems with the Unicorn tribe. Not sure why. I just letting my mind tell me what is going on. And, that could be a bad thing.

The one thing both Octavia and Vinyl have going for them, is they are not quitters. Once they get there minds set on something, they sick with it.
