George Voss is cynical, misanthropic, and world-weary, his only joy being ponies.
And unfortunately for the rest of us, he’s been chosen by the Equestrian government to represent humanity so Celestia can decide whether to make contact with planet Earth.

A short deconstruction of some first contact tropes.

This almost makes me want to write something entitled "Celestia And The Realist", but I don't do self-insert fics. :twilightsheepish:

An entertaining little read.

Part of what bugs me about some HiE fics I've seen is that they offer no or very little explanation for why that human specifically was chosen (if it was truly random, some chinese dude would likely have been chosen instead), so I've tried to provide a reasonable explanation for this here.

Well, if were random, something like ~1/5 would be Chinese going by recent population estimates, or with a single individual it would be an 80% chance they wouldn't be from China, even if they would be the most individually represented nation.

And personally what bugs me about most HiE protagonists is that they're a bunch of unlikeable jerks with a ridiculously dark and troubled past, who will make out humanity to be the worst thing ever rather than give a realistic portrayal of our strengths and flaws as a species. But that's probably a discussion for another time.

Thanks for sharing this.

Hopefully I've made it clear that the main character is meant to be disliked, although if you have any pointers I'd be glad to accept them.

As for the China thing, I meant that in the sense that story after story about white anglophone male protagonist gets grating after a while, and I'd like to see more foreign HiE protagonists, or at least a justification for why they were chosen. Failing that, I'd like to see a black dude, especially a really stereotypical one meant as a parody.

More please.

Oh yeah, that's not a problem here where you've gone for it intentionally as a deconstruction. I'm more referring to the many fics where the character is unintentionally dislikeable, and it's all done without any trace of irony. The kind of protagonist you see in 99% of HiE stuff, basically.

Sure, I get where you're coming from. But given the demographics this is always going to be an issue on an English-based site for an American IP catering to a mostly western audience, particularly since most writers tend to go by what they're familiar with already.

I don't like "deconstruction" fics.

They aren't stories, they're just spite and insults disguised with a cliche plot and poorly thought out dialogue.

"If they were perfect, they wouldn't need friends. Same goes for us."

this.

This one shot was fairly anvilicious :pinkiehappy:

7150889 not gonna lie, it totally was.

Sure, there were decent people— him, for example— but overwhelmingly, humans were dicks.

This reminds me of a quote from a games reviewer I like: "People are shit. I'm shit. You're shit. And if your reaction to this is 'Yep, everyone's shit except for me!' Well lemme tell you something sweetheart, you're an extra-steamy pile of shit with added sprinkles and a fucking shit-cherry on top."
