Darling, Darling. Darling. Darling. Darling Darling.

Pinkie screamed at the top of her lungs, “I brought a stick! Let's party! Fun, fun! Cupcakes! I'm so annoying!”

Rarity frowned, “Oh, darling! Please be a darling and be quiet, darling! Let's get going darlings!”

Applejack smirked, nodding,”Perfect first scene to our adventure fic! Now all I need is —” she began to scribble down her idea.

Rainbow crashed onto the ship, cause she's Rainbow Crash! Ha, get it! (YOU SHOULD!) “I'm so cool! Awesomeness! Baka! I'm so cool and fast!!”

Fluttershy cried, “Eeeeeeep!” She turned to Rainbow. “I love you in secret, Dashie!”

Dash grinned, “Me, too, babe!” And they totally started making out! RADICAL!

Twilight teleported on the ship, and began shooting the magics out of her horn, “FRIENDSHIP! BOOKS!”

PARTY!” Pinkie took out her party canon, cause it's Pinkie and started shooting confetti everywhere! All the ponies ran around the ship in chaos, an annoyed Applejack sighing. Applejack was best pony, and best pony was only the smartest and most sensible pony around!

But then a random human popped out of the ocean, he landed on the ship. He looked super edgy and hot! “Marry me, Applejack!”

Applejack grinned, jumping into his handsome arms! “We'll be going!”
And they jumped off the ship and had the most awesome underwater makeout ever!

lBOOOOOOOOKS!”

Applejack grinned, “Hah! Those ponies are totally in character! Screw mah’ editor!!”

This episode was actually each one of the starring characters’ discarded adventure fanfiction.

Now I see why it's called the Pony Point of View.

But WHY didn't it take place from the first-person perspective!?

Either way, it's noteworthy in my book.

Okay, show of hands. Who wants to see an episode of Applejack going on a real pirate adventure and speaking in that sea pirate voice? That would be awesome.

Pretty goofy. I kinda liked it

4234988 To be fair that's how half the fandom sees them, it seems.

I haven't actually watched the episode yet, though.

Salty Sailor Applejack made me laugh.

Also, what Applejack thought of Pinkie and Rarity :rainbowlaugh:

At least Spike wasn't a total butt monkey in this episode.

That was an okay episode.

I quite liked the pirate AJ in Rarity's telling.

It's... an episode. It was pretty fun, and it didn't have anything that made me hate it, so... it passes.

I love me a good Rashomon Effect.

Also, more mythological creatures in my MLP: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bunyip

Also if you look REALLY closely you can see what nautical media each of the three embellished stories were referencing.

Any semblance of logic completely fell apart in the final act...

1: How did a sea monster capsize them when they were in such shallow water?

2: Why is AppleJack, a farmpony who NEVER LEAVES THE FARM, the "adventurous one"? Rarity has done more travelling and adventuring than her, she has even been shown adventuring in the mountains outside Ponyville in search of gems... in other words, TREASURE HUNTING.

3: How does the revelation of the sea monster in any way change whose fault it is?

4: How would the three of them believe it was storming when it, evidently, wasn't?

Blaaaah, the lack of logic makes my head hurt, but overall I thought it was a nice and fun episode. Piratejack was gold, and DarlingRarity was pretty amusing. I'll give it a pass as another good episode.

Well, that was an episode that broke new ground and did things differently, which is something that I, for one, appreciate. Tabitha, Andrea and Ashleigh were really showing off by exaggerating every word and emotion in their impassioned and very, very subjective stories (and Tabitha did a good job of playing Pinkie and Applejack's false impressions of her). It was their chewing on the scenery and massive over-exaggerations of their righteous indignation that really was the selling point for this episode.

The lesson, everypony? The lesson is that 'subjective truth' is bunkum. Because we all witness and experience different things then we can never be sure that what we 'know' is right is necessarily the same things that others went through. We should never get mad if others disagree with us but listen to their stories before coming to judgement.

It's just a good thing that Twilight is an expert Cryptozoologist and knew about the tri-horned bunkum and its cucumber-eating habits! Seriously, I would have preferred a slightly more involved denouement with more elements to it and no beastie ex machina, as cute as the big guy was.

Overall, a fair enough episode from a season that has generally been fair enough but has rarely excelled.

BenRG's Rating: 7/10

This was a pretty good episode It gave us some insights into the characters and a great moral. I can't really complain about it.

I haven't even watched it yet

I never considered the possibility of Crazy Cap'n Applejack before. But now that I know about it, I need more.

Piratejack is Best Applejack

I wanna play From the Depths now. ;-;

Hope Applejack has the insurance to pay off the totaled galleon.

Also, first time outside of Ty the Tasmanian Tiger where we see a mythical creature from Australia.

Piratejack: Beware ye landluvers for today we hut the Devil himself...the White Whale....MOBY DICK

Rarity has a rather interesting imagination.

So, when Twilight started talking about the importance of those cucumber sandwiches, I was expecting a kappa to show up. Did that happen to anyone else?

Is Fluttershy and Rainbow's Flight School reunion a reference to the comic?

Okay.
Pirate Applejack? Great.
Rarity's 'Darling' spam? cute.
Tri-horned Bunyip? NOPE! Just... no.
I would have accepted that while fighting over the map, the boat grounded on a rock and sank. Especially considering the water was very shallow. But the Bunyip addition was, at the very least, contrived. And of course the dots could only be connected by Twilight who happened to know all about Bunyips before hand. (Facts that the viewers would have had no way of knowing). So the whole 'find the truth between the three stories' premise is out the window from the start. Also, am I the only one who feels that literally every other incidental creature in the show from hydras to cockatrices were better drawn than this one? Even though I thought he was unnecessary to the episode, Bunyip deserved better.
Also, according to mythology, Bunyips are supposed to be FRESHWATER animals inhabiting creeks, riverbeds, and billabongs. If you had to have a SEA animal sink the boat accidentally, then why not have had it be Steven Magnet? He's a SEA serpent, and could have easily gotten a taste for Rarity's cucumber sandwiches while he was in Ponyville.
Just sayin'...

6 out of 10 on the E meter.

4235070 Let it be known that there should be no doubt the Mane 6 must be swimming in bits if they can afford to rent a boat like that for a day cruise on the ocean!

Wow, finally an episode of friends just being friends this season. What a darling surprise.

ok... the ending ruined it for me completely. I was eager to learn what really happened, maybe someway to equally share the blame between the three ponies, or maybe none of them were really at fault and it was all just the storm.

Instead they force in some magical loch-ness doggy thingy and blames the sinking on the ship on that which is amazingly dumb, especially since we, as the audience, never got a single hint towards there being a creature in the first place.

Good and funny episode with an amazingly dumb ending that pretty much ruined it for me.

MJP

im guessing making a "peoples court" episode would get you sued

4235010
The way I remember it, there was a storm, but it had nothing to do with the boat sinking.

*goes and checks* Pinkie: "Wait, the storm had nothing to do with the capsizing?"

Meh, it was a good and fun episode but the final act with Bunyip ex machina really ruined it for me. I had a pretty hard time buying the fact that all three of them thought that a storm had capsized them when there wasn't one and, although I'll give them credit for taking it in a wholly different direction than I was expecting, I was hoping for a version of the story where it turns out everypony was equally at fault as that would've been more of a "friendship lesson" than a random sea monster. 6.5-7/10

The resolution ranks pretty high on the randomness meter. I'm conflicted about whether to think it was half-assed or so out of the left field that it's strangely funny.

The rest of the episode was definitely entertaining, though. The exaggerated portrayals in their respective retellings brought out some really fun moments, particularly Applejack as a crusty ol' seadog and Rarity adopting the speech patterns of her fanon counterpart. Take a shot for every "DAH-ling", I did it with just sugary drinks and reached the point where I can see individual molecules vibrating. :derpytongue2:

Well I thought that was quite an enjoyable episode, sure having the bunyip seems like a bit of an absurd plot device but overall quite a good episode.

4235070
The boating company probably got half of the treasure she found at the end.

4235124 Every episode this season has been contrived. I thought they were going to do something like have Twilight combine the three stories in such a way that each other pony would have had those differing stories. IE: "Applejack tripped and bumped into the table, knocking the food into the water" wherein Applejack's recount of tripping on the ball (or whatever else) would be true, but without seeing that exact thing, Rarity COULD conceivably think Applejack was upset about something, and knocked the food into the water on purpose. Each pony would have their own point of view, but without knowing the other points of view, none of the three would have been able to put the entire story together, and only through Twilight's recount of each story in this way would the three finally realize their mistakes.

I was actually hopeful they would do something like the above, which would have made this the best episode of the season (not really saying much, though). But instead there's the whole Bunyip thing, which is totally ludicrous, and merely there for the sake of ending the episode, and not making an even relatively believable story. How in the fuck would each pony have such entirely different stories if the only thing that happened was the food falling into the water? Why does Rarity say she has only a couple bags, while Pinkie says she has dozens? How would they go from Applejack intentionally throwing the food into the water to Rarity intentionally throwing the food into the water, to Rarity accidentally throwing the food into the water? Those would have to be three completely separate events, otherwise there's zero explanation as to why each would see something so completely different.

Police investigating crimes have to gather stories from witnesses, and only by using the facts that multiple stories share do they actually have anything to go on. In the case of the episode, Twilight would know the food fell into the water, but she would not know why or who did it. So how exactly does that help Applejack, Rarity, and Pinkie?

Also, if they tossed the food into the water (however it happened) while they were out at sea, how could the boat sink so close to the dock they came from? I've never seen a huge ship sink into a foot of water, so I don't know exactly how THAT happened, either.

I did appreciate some of the references, especially to the Titanic and "Luxury cruises NEVER sink", but there was so little else to hold the story together, it became just as awful as most of the other episodes this season. 4/10.

4235124
Stephen Magnet is a river serpent. Remember where we first saw him? A river.

This was a fun episode. Nothing too groundbreaking, but nothing too irritating either. I did think it was too extreme for Rarity, Pinkie and Applejack to refuse to speak to each other, but I guess the plot demanded it. I liked the ocean setting, and the animation on the ship was good. The ending was weird – the Tri-horned Bunyip has an odd design for this show, and I don't see how he could create such a huge wave in such shallow water. At least it kept the episode from being too predictable – but only because the ending was barely set up for the audience.

The next episode sounds like it could be good as long as they don't try to force goofy slapstick humor with AJ.

I'm not sorry.

and I don't see how he could create such a huge wave in such shallow water

Whoever said it was a huge wave? The three storytellers? And you trust them? That tiny wave Twilight levitated the second boat over is probably all that happened.

4235223 Then how did the boat capsize?

4235225
He bumped it? One of the 4 writers had to have thought that through.

4235223 Considering each of the three had the exact same boat in their stories, that boat must be true. Also, if Applejack had rented the ship she would know what it looked like (and especially COST, since they sunk it and she'd have to pay for the thing). A tiny wave like the one Twilight levitated that TINY ship over couldn't have possibly affected a ship as large as the one each of them recounted. And since each of them talked about the storm despite their conflicting stories, that part must also be true. And storms sink ships all the time, which makes that part actually believable.

Maran #44 · Oct 1st, 2016 · · 1 ·

4235228 He bumped it without anyone else seeing him in the shallows? Sorry but the ending seems like a stretch no matter how I look at it. It would have made more sense if they had gone out to the cove and taken a lifeboat back to shore.

This episode was alright. Nothing I really wish to talk about, but it was good.

Oh I know, I enjoyed seeing Spike being treated with respect. I found it funny how Twilight kept shoving the parchment and pen into his hand, even replacing his cupcake with the paper and the ending was funny too.

I really like that frame of Pirate Applejack through Rarity's perspective and I like the frame of Twilight, Spike, Rarity, Applejack, and Pinkie Pie, sitting on the small boat.

A lost at sea story comes to mind from that scene.

I wonder what kind of verbal gymnastics had to occur with Standards and Practices regarding the depiction of proper seafaring safety procedures. "Okay, we'll put them in life jackets on the second boat, but the first boat is a large cruising vessel! People on cruise ships don't have to wear life jackets all the time!"

I'm going to assume that this was originally plotted out with a couple more loose ends tied up, but then they realized the episode was too long, so they had to cut them from the script. Specifically, how did the cucumber sandwiches end up in the water in the first place? Maybe I need to watch it again, but I can't square each character's recollection of the events with one single way it could have happened.

There's also the issue that two episodes ago, it was an important plot point that Applejack always tells the truth, but now she's involved in a story in which all of the recollections are colored by bias. Unless Applejack's version was the truth, but with a hint of personal interpretation mixed in? (Pinkie involuntarily blindfolded her for the piñata -- although Pinkie thought that Applejack was up for it -- which caused her to struggle to see, which Rarity imagined as a grouchy pirate?)

Twilight repeatedly shoving the scroll and quill into Spike's face (without even looking at him!) made me laugh each time.

I agree with the others: It was a pleasant ride with an unfulfilling ending.

Lol, so many people being annoyed about the contrived solution of the mistery. I'm pretty sure that was a reference to/joke about all those detective stories where the detective comes up with a really convoluted explanation which he only found out because he just so happens to know some really special local things, like Twilight with the cucumbers and the Bunyip here. I mean the whole episode emulates the structure of that type of detective story.
Of course I also hoped Twilight would tell a really detailed crazy story that explained everything, but I guess the (really great) witness reports took up too much time for that to fit in too.

Anyone else thought that this episode was gonna to be a first person perspective story similar to Hardcore Henry, that follows a gender neutral pony character that experiences a day in Ponyville? Just me?

Ah, an episode with lots of Rarity, who is as awesome as always. Her captain uniform was great, as was her brief Titanic moment. The episode also had some good fun with AJ. And once again we see why Rarijack would never work :pinkiecrazy:

4235010

1: How did a sea monster capsize them when they were in such shallow water?

I figure the sea monster carried 'em back to shore, but they don't recollect that because they were a bit out of it. Consider how shallow the water besides the dock was when they stood up. The ship they left on would have too deep of a draught to dock there. So logically, they were most likely standing on something else, like on a sea monster feeling sorry for accidentally sinking their ship.

Rarity isn't into adventure. Adventure is dirty and filthy and other Applejack things. Rarity does mine gems, but well, mining isn't adventure, and she suckers Spike into helping to avoid the dirt. AJ gets the role because she's the physical pony... things like rodeo and such. Is AJ likely to ditch her responsibilities to seek out adventure? Of course not, but that doesn't mean she can't find such things fun. Of the three on the ship, AJ and Pinkie are the ones more likely to play pirate.

3: How does the revelation of the sea monster in any way change whose fault it is?

It doesn't completely. However, from watching all three points of view, as well as knowing how all three ponies usually behave, you can piece together how things most likely happened. The dumping of the sandwiches, for example, most likely happened as told by AJ, with the accidental stumble resulting in them going overboard.

I figure the episode just didn't want to show all the events a fourth time, not just for time reasons, but also because the actual version would be the least interesting of the lot. Needs of the show.

4: How would the three of them believe it was storming when it, evidently, wasn't?

Twilight didn't say there wasn't a storm, just that it had nothing to do with the ship capsizing. It probably wasn't as big of a storm as the landlubbers thought it was. But that can just be due to their inexperience as well as the nature of memories. Memory can be pretty easily influenced, which is why investigators and such have to be very careful when asking questions. And also why the three ponies' stories vary so much in regards to their details. So once the idea of the storm being responsible gets planted, it probably grew their in heads. Also, Twilight tossed over a single sandwich, while Rarity lost multiple sandwiches. That could have resulted in a faster moving tri-horn, creating a bigger wave, reinforcing the stronger storm idea.

Blaaaah, the lack of logic makes my head hurt, but overall I thought it was a nice and fun episode. Piratejack was gold, and DarlingRarity was pretty amusing. I'll give it a pass as another good episode.

Yeah, always good to apply MST3K logic. 'Just repeat to yourself "It's just a show, I should really just relax"'. Between the relatively short length of episodes and it being a show for little kids, things will happen that aren't explained in the best way.

Mind you, can still have lots of fun nitpicking and analyzing, but just don't take any of it too seriously.

For God's sake, people, it's a show targeted towards children. Not every episode has to be deep, philosophical, or mind-boggling. That being said, this was a very cute and fun little episode. A great way to relax during a chilly October afternoon.
