State of the Writer, April 2024!

    It's another boring one! I ain't wrote nothin'! :B

It actually feels lately like I've been crawling out of a pit? So maybe there's a light ahead? But it's also blocked by Balatro lol somepony save me D:

The only other thing relevant to this blog is that I've had notes for a vs. post sitting in my notes document for probably the entire month now, what is wrong with me? D:

Fic recs, April 22nd: Jordan179 edition

Once again, though a good bit late, I bring it upon myself to memorialize an author via reviews of their stories. Though this time, it's different, as I had no connection to Jordan179 and only learned of his passing (three years ago this month, coincidentally), from this post

Another post about video games and Youtube and stuff

If I'm going to waste time watching shit on Youtube, the least I can do is tell people about it. :P

Do you like video games? How about philosophy?

I like one of those things for sure, but no one combines the two better than a Youtuber named InfernalRamblings, a former professional game developer who now creates hour and a half long video essays about the meanings of video games and how they relate to the world today. Here's a few highlights, since this is now basically my only

What would you want to see in an FoE sidestory written by me? · 9:19pm Mar 17th, 2015

My self-esteem is tanking like a 50th level Tauren paladin right now, so let's see if I can't drive it lower with a post about something that's been on my mind lately.

It should be no secret that I'm chomping at the bit to start the Next Big Thing after Epic Unicorn History finishes, and of the three stories I want to write, two are Fallout: Equestria side fics.

And that worries me, because I'm pretty sure no one's here because they want to read that kind of thing. <.< (I have no idea what you all want, to be perfectly honest. D:) Aegis is still one of my least-viewed stories, after all. (Which is fine, it needs to be tweaked into something better anyway.)

Of the two ideas I have, one's silly and the other is totally serious, not to mention very experimental, and that's the one I really want people to read just to see if the concepts I'm playing with actually work. But no one's going to read it, most likely. :/ So Imma ask some questions:

1) Would you read an FoE fic if I wrote it?
2) What would you expect me to write about?
3) What would you want me to include?
4) What would you not want me to include? What would turn you completely off of reading it?

I'm really keen on writing this shit, but I definitely don't want to put tons and tons of effort into stories no one's gonna read. :B So tell me how much I suck, I guess.

Muggy.

Also, I only read the title of the blog.

1) No, I wouldn't. Not because I think you can't do it (not that I think that), but I just have a serious, often irrational disdain towards everything Fallout Equestria. I'd encourage you create your own world instead, if you've got the itch for post-apocalyptica. Allows for more creative freedom and such.
2) Something character-driven. I love me some great characters.
3) Epic fight scenes, duh.
4) World building up the wazoo. Don't get me wrong, I love the stuff, but I hate when the focus of a story drifts into describing the world without giving the characters or the actual weight of the story itself as much attention.

Is it a hero's journey? X leaves X stable to discover the mysteries of the wasteland? I do like those, but I haven't seen anything else from FoE. I'm hoping Life in the Wasteland by NorsePony will offer a little change of pace. Then again, I have only read stuff from Kkat and Somber.

I'm going to go ahead and conveniently assume that you mean Fall of Equestria.

Yes. Yes, I would.

Hmmm. Reading further down the post, I see distressing signs that you mean Fallout: Equestria, instead of a hilarious pisstake sidestory on Fall of Equestria.

Do you have a moment? Could we take this time to clasp hands and speak from the heart? Good.

You have sweaty hands.

Anyway, kindly reconsider. Fallout: Equestria has enough stories. Fall of Equestria can never be ridiculed enough.

Do it for the children. And the enslaved and violated mares.

No.

Do it for yourself, Mr. Perfect. Do it for you.

I don't really care much about Fo:E, but I might be willing it give it a shot for a silly thing.

You seem to be unaware that FOE generally means Fallout: Equestria, while FoE generally means Fall of Equestria. (At least as far as I am able to determine.)

That plus "50th level Tauren paladin" led to some confusion in my noggin. Hilarious confusion. :rainbowlaugh:

You should probably type out Fallout:Equestria or use FO;E so people don't think it is Fall of Equestria.

And well, you know me; I'll probably read anything from you.

I'd at the very least put it in my to read list (as I do with all Fallout Equestria's).

As for everything else, it's really up to you, you shouldn't ask people what they think you should do because only you know your writing good enough to make those decisions.

Though, personally I've said it a hundred times before, and I'll say it more in the future, we take the universe way to seriously, and I'd say do the silly one simply because we need more silly stories in the community.

Well, never having read a Fallout:Equestria story (except Bad Horse's "Twenty Minutes" and "The Mailmare", both because they were from an author I already respected), I'd say what would make me read it would be knowing it was written by you, and what would make me not read it is if it relied heavily on preknowledge of the universe. If I could stumble blind into it knowing only that FO:E is "postapocalyptic nuclear ponies" and still enjoy it, I'd read it.

I'd like to see your deconstruction of Fallout Equestria, so yes, I'd be interested.

Also I LIKED Aegis, even if you feel it was flawed. Let me put this in numbers for convenience sake.

1) Yah (and already have in the past)

2) Again, I'd like to see something of a deconstruction, either in satire or wholly genuine form. Potentially both at once. (have you read AbH yet hahaha)

3) Examination of the good/evil dichotomy of the original Fallout Equestria setting along the lines of good and evil being entirely objective. Raiders also don't get enough love, and the little spotlight they do get shows them as mentally challenged junkies, even though it's pretty clear this is a lifestyle that has become a form of tribalism. I'd also like to see post-apocalyptic society, where cities and towns and services have been or are well on their way to being reestablished.

4) Don't rehash the original Fallout Equestria. Use the 1, 2, or New Vegas model, and not the broke ass backwards model from 3. Two hundred years have passed since dat great war. America was founded in the 1700s with candles, muskets, little to no medical proficiency, and zero electricity. They have pre-war tech, magic, and god knows what else at their disposal. Also I trust you not to do this, but don't reference the show or fandom at every opportunity. We know it's post-apocalyptic ponies. We don't need memes to remind us.

Ayyyyy

1) Would you read an FoE fic if I wrote it?

Yes,
2) What would you expect me to write about?

Looking back at your past fics, I'd say humor, and considering Fallout Equestria, I'd go with dark humor.
Either that or the logistics of living in a post-apocalyptic world, since, from the perspective of its residents, it would be just the world, no post-apocalypse about it.

3) What would you want me to include?
Real people doing real things, due to the aforementioned "Hey, we're not in a post-apocalypse, we're just going through an interesting historical period!" view that I think ponies would have. Like, I'm pretty sure there's actual real places on our actual earth that qualify as post-apocalyptic (and one dystopia-hi N. Korea!), but I don't see writers taking inspiration from them.

4) What would you not want me to include? What would turn you completely off of reading it?
Power plays and ridiculously souped up characters and situations. I haven't plumbed the depths of Fallout side stories, but I bet they're a systemic problem in the genre.
Also, "canon" characters or allusions to them.

You have 754 followers and 754 blogs, why don't you have 754 stories?

You better get to writing whatever and fill that gap.

1) Would you read an FoE fic if I wrote it?
Yes.

2) What would you expect me to write about?
Some shipping bollocks. What I want you to write about, however, is bad karma coming back to bite people who think they're the good guys.

3) What would you want me to include?
An anti-climax. Or at least a downer ending. I don't think I've read one of those from you.

4) What would you not want me to include? What would turn you completely off of reading it?
Shipping, plus any payoff the characters haven't earned in triplicate.

Yes, I'd read an FO:E story written by you. If Aegis is any indication, I'm actually really looking forward to it!

The only thing I'd like is that I want you to buck the trend and write an FO:E story ~100,000 (or fewer) words long, rather than the ridiculous 400,000+ word fics most of the side stories are.

That was a very speedy reply, sir. <.<

Believe it or not, I had a similar character concept before I knew about Muggy. And after knowing about him... I am not discarding that concept. :V

2886311
Life in the Wasteland is really good, go read it. :D It should satisfy.

2886366
First chapter of the silly fic is going to be a lampooning of Fall of Equestria. :B

2886376
I do it the other way around. c.c

2886426
When tossing around the oft-used advice "write for yourself", I'm a big believer in interpreting that to mean "write what you want in ways that others will find enjoyable".

2886445
Hm. Aegis might actually work better without foreknowledge than either of the other two. I mean, something is going to be lost eventually.

2886502
While I'm into deconstruction, I'm not sure how deconstructy I can get since my knee-jerk reaction is still a Nelson laugh.

(have you read AbH yet hahaha)

have you finished AbH yet hahaha :B

I'd also like to see post-apocalyptic society, where cities and towns and services have been or are well on their way to being reestablished.

Raider society will feature heavily in the serious story, so I'm taking your advice into consideration. As for this, I don't have any plans for it, but I agree that I really love this kinda thing.

2886511
I like this! :D

2886549
oh my god stfu D:

2886566

An anti-climax. Or at least a downer ending. I don't think I've read one of those from you.

Stay tuned...

(How the fuck would I do shipping in a post-apocalypse that is something I can't even fathom c.c)

2886605
I'm a bad judge of how long stories will be, but I'm expecting the serious fic to be around 100k, at least over 50k. Hopefully not too much longer than that. :B

2886674
Well then, just take my second part of advice in do something silly because the whole community is to serious.

It's pastel ponies in a post-apocalyptic wasteland people, can't we have some lighthearted stupid fun?

I mean, I stand by saying that Pink Eyes is the best side-fic if not mainly for that reason, it knows not to be serious.

Tauren paladins made me think of Tauren rogues which made me think of:

"No, Rainbow Dash, you're not allowed to be a rogue. I don't care how cool you think it would be. You have hooves. It's not happening."

2886674

(How the fuck would I do shipping in a post-apocalypse that is something I can't even fathom c.c)

Have you even read any FoE? It is like shipping central. Since a couple of the Mane 6 are alive (or uncertain) by the fic end, I'm sure you can find a way. Not to mention the possibility of clones, robots... you can be creative. Write Twilestia for bonus points.

What I'd like to see is a FoE fic a couple of decades in the past, before stable power structures were in place. And you can be sure I will read it.

2886674

have you finished AbH yet hahaha :B

GODDAMNIT hahahah someday
But yeah, do ya thing. I wanna see you take it on again :3

2886674

(How the fuck would I do shipping in a post-apocalypse that is something I can't even fathom c.c)

I don't trust you not to find a way if someone isn't keeping you honest.

2886737

What I'd like to see is a FoE fic a couple of decades in the past, before stable power structures were in place.

Or just far enough away that the Brotherhood of Steel and so forth don't have any effect. None of these groups need any more time in the spotlight, I agree.

That's true, Fluttershy is up for grabs.

ship her with Derpy zombie no everything is terrible D:

Your parodies are often funny in a dark, sometimes horrifying, kind of way. Fallout is rife with dark humor which I would think would lend itself very well indeed to the author of "Dirty Prancing" in particular.

Just write the thing.

PresentPerfect

2886878
But first I have to write the other thing. D:

2887036 But when you've written the other thing, write the thing.

IT'S A NEVER-ENDING CYCLE

Hm. I wonder what my opinion on Aegis would be if I reread it today.

1) Yes.
2,3,4) As long as it's a 'serious' story, I won't complain.

I think the fact that I know your opinion on Fallout: Equestria makes me more inclined to see your take on it.

I vote for Silly.

1. Yes
2. Dark comedy wouldn't hurt.
3. Anything that makes the story good, fight scenes maybe.
4. World building!

I've read everything else Fallout:Equestria related you've put out. Even put together the one-line reactions from your giant chapter by chapter review. So pretty sure I'll read it. The main complaint I had about Aegis was that it didn't reference the war or post-war world enough. Could've been either a western or generic post-apocalyptic thingy.

What do I want to see....? Agent Coulson with a time machine trying to find the exact physical place Octavia died so he can go back in time and save her.

Slightly more seriously, mostly just interested in what you come up with. I mean, you can't possibly match the sheer genius of Fallout Equestria: Lesbians, but I bet you can come pretty close.

Ulysses. Nobody's done anything with him, and it's a damn shame.

Failing that... I'm gonna agree with Wanderer D above, Muggy. (Or maybe just The Big Empty in general.)

I'd probably read them, though they wouldn't be at the top of my to-read list unless they're pretty short. I can appreciate the setting if it's done well, which I feel I can trust you to do. But fics in that world seem to run towards massive, sprawling stories with loads and loads of characters, multiple subplots which I tend to forget about until they suddenly pop back up and become relevant again, and main characters who can keep on wisecracking and kicking flank while taking enough damage to slaughter a herd of elephants.

Oh, and they also tend to get abandoned by their authors just as they start getting interesting. So, what I'm saying is that I'm a little wary. I've been hurt before :fluttercry:

What would I like to see? Something different. Or even a novel take on something that's been done before.
What would turn me away from it? Unrelenting grimdark that keeps getting worse and worse without a break. I can only handle so much of that before my poor little soul becomes overburdened and shrivels into a weeping ball of misery.

2886366

I didn't know what Fall of Equestria was. So I went and looked. Now I realize that I actually did know what it was, but I had apparently blocked it out of my mind. I'll probably do so again shortly. So if, in a few months, I innocently ask "What's Fall of Equestria?" please don't be too surprised.

Meaning and originality are all that I can ask for. Best of luck if you go for it.

Yes. I like Fallout: Equestria.

Damn it pp just write what you want.

Tell you what, I'll give you my ghoul story I never really finished. I think you'll like it...

chapter 1

chapter 2

Let's call it a collab if you want, or just run with it if you don't. it's a heartfelt story about a ghoul-skin rug.

:/

None can. None can...

2887608
While I'm looking to do long stories, I'm definitely not interested in huge, complex plots, just lengthy ones. Also definitely gonna write the whole thing before I publish. :V That's just common sense at this point.

Well I'm always up for something different. Bring on the experimental stuff!

PP, you hate Fallout: Equestria. Why would you write a side-story to it?

PresentPerfect

Because I have a tremendous inferiority complex also I don't hate it that much.
