The Day of the Dead Anthology

The Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a now-famous tradition from ancient times that has been a huge part of Mexican Culture through the centuries. Like so many things in Mexico, it's influenced strongly by certain aspects of the Aztec people.

It has shaped the way those of us with that heritage look at life and death in many ways, and most importantly on the remembrance of, and honoring the deceased. We traditionally decorate little altars dedicated to the memories of those that passed away… but it's not a somber occasion.

PSA: Using AIs to Write and Publish Stories in Fimfiction

Hello everyone, this is a PSA (Public Service Announcement, for those of ESL) to put to rest consistent questions about using AI to 'write' stories and publish them here. This is not intended as a poll or a request for feedback. It is exclusively a clarification on an already-existing rule.

People ask: "Can I, oh great and powerful D, post a story or chapter that I got ChatGPT to write for me?!"

And the answer, my friend, is... No.

Absolutely not. Not in a thousand years!

    Because you didn't write it.

It is not your creation. You are NOT the author. In fact, you are the opposite.

There seems to be some confusion when interpreting the following rule:

    Don’t Post (Content)

    Phishing Awareness

Have you ever found yourself in a situation like this?

And then you magically find yourself in a suspiciously familiar site, except that you're not logged in, and it requires you to do so?

Well. Don't log in. This is a scam, and a cheap one at that.

There've been recent attempts to obtain Fimfiction users’ personal data, like passwords and/or emails through links like the one I'm making fun of above. And a distressing amount of people don't seem to know what phishing attempts are.

If you HAVE entered a site like this and put in your data, make sure to follow these basic steps at least.

All Our Best [Royal Canterlot Library]

As should be obvious from 15 months without a feature, life has taken the Royal Canterlot Library curators in different directions. While there’s still plenty of awesome stories being written in the My Little Pony fandom, we’re no longer actively working to spotlight them, and it’s time to officially draw the project to a close.

Thank you for all of your support, suggestions, and comments over the years. We’re grateful to have been able to share seven years of exemplary stories with you, and give more insight into the minds behind them. In the spirit of the project, please keep reading and recommending fantastic fics to friends—the community is enriched when we all share what we love.

    Reunions: A Swapped Roles Contest!

Okay guys here's something fun presented by Nitro Indigo.

Presented by me, I guess, but I digress.

Last year, I (Nitro Indigo) noticed that there was a surprising lack of roleswap fanfics on this site. To fix that, I decided to run a roleswap contest over the summer themed around secrets. While it didn’t get many entries, it nevertheless attracted the attention of some big authors and was the origin of two of my favourite fics. Overall, I think it was a success, so I’ve decided to run another one!

    Minor Rules and Reporting Update

Hope everyone is enjoying the new year.

Some small changes have been made to our rules as well as to the reporting process.

    Rules

"No attacks directed at individuals or groups due to race, gender, gender identity, religion or sexual identity."

This better clarifies our previously ill-defined hate speech rule and includes groups as well as individual attacks.

"No celebration, glorification or encouragement of real life criminal activity."

This includes past, present and potential future crimes.

    Jinglemas 2019

There's truly no time like the holidays. What's better than copious amounts of food, quality time with family and friends, hearing the sweet sound of Trans-Siberian Orchestra on repeat, and unmanagble financial stress from our capitalist overlords?

    Gift exchanges of course!

Site Post » Tagging · 9:56am Dec 24th, 2012

Wanna squash this quick before it starts up again.

Tagging people is banned on Fimfiction. It is SPAM

If you don't know what I mean, don't worry. You'll know if this relates to you.

Awww... Okay. :fluttercry:

I was wondering when this would pop up. Thanks for squashing it early.

FINALLY! :rainbowkiss:

... People were tagging again? Didn't you ban it already?

What the heck is tagging? Like when you tag on Facebook? :rainbowhuh:

644462 *Pats on back* There, there it was not that much fun anyway, lets get back to ponies and have a Fluttershy::yay:

What exactly is tagging? WAIT, don't tell me! If I don't know what it is, there's a 50% chance I won't know HOW to do it!

644470
Chain letter spam bullshit that was disguised as a game of "tag".

Thank you. Have a pinkie. :pinkiehappy:

if ppl did not know it was banned before they know now

but i want to be..... tagged (why have i never fallen victim to this):fluttercry:

Rules:
1. You must post the rules.
2. Each person must post 5 things about themselves in their journal
3. Answer the questions the tagger set for you in their post, and create eleven new questions for the people you tag to answer.
4. You have to choose 11 people to tag and post their icons on your journal.
5. Go to their page and tell them you have tagged them.
6. No tag backs
7. No stuff in the tagging section about "you're tagged if you're reading this". You legitimately have to tag 11 people.

For those of you that don't know. I do believe it's some form of chain-mail game, and I got tagged into it. You supposedly have to pass it on to eleven other people.

644528 I do want to know which bastard started it.

Good riddance to bad rubbish. There are far too many of these things all across the web.

644531 Y'know, I could probably find that out by following the tagging back to the origin post.

644568 That's going to be a lot of work.

644569 Good point. I'm going to eat cake instead. :trollestia:

I saw this once!
But it confused me so I moved myself on.
Confusion saves you from commiting crimes.
The more you know.

644574 Alright, this is just getting strange.

Well it was fun seeing epicdonuts flip over being tagged twice but I can see it becoming real old real fast.

Thanks for the reminder. This happens to be immediately relevant to me.

Wait, didn't this happen already? I could've sworn you have already banned it before.

Tagging your stories with genres or characters will cause bans and deletions. All stories that are tagged will be deleted tomorrow.

(Pursuant to the Internet Non-Humor Understanding Treaty of 2004, the above is not actually true)

Garbo #26 · Dec 24th, 2012 · · 22 ·

Okay, this I do not understand. If you don't want to respond to the tag, you don't have to, and some people actually find it fun. You get asked some questions about yourself that other people want to know. What's so bad about that? And also, I'm going to give Knighty the benefit of the doubt here. If people are complaining, he has to change things and cater to his users. That's not his fault; that's just reality.
But what this further proves that you users that are complaining are sucking the life - and the internet in general - out of this website. Honestly, I would rather go to Pony Fiction Archive if they had the same amount of users, if things continue to go like this. It's only making those of us who actually want to have fun have to behave like the killjoys who are inexplicably celebrating this as a victory. Also, if people are complaining about this as I assume they are, stop being such little pansies! If someone tags you, delete the comment and ignore it! Participation is not required, and everyone understands that! But going to the mods and complaining is how a preschooler would handle an issue. As much as you might think the people like me are immuture, many of us only do it because we want to have fun, and there's nothing wrong with that. Welcome to real life! You can't complain to a higher power an make every little annoyance go away in real life! If anything, it's you people who are immature.
And you might think this argument is out of line or hateful. That is not my intent. I am merely trying to make you people realize that this is the internet. It's not an orderly place, but would you want it that way? That's what the SOPA bill wanted.
And also, I'll say this again, I am not blaming Knighty. He has to deal with a rowdy bunch of people, and I understand that. Hell, I think I understood that even better after my 2-hour ban. He's got a lot of stuff to deal with, and he complains less than some of you who barely have to deal with anything! That's actually impressive! And I'm not saying this to suck up to him either. I don't owe him anything; he banned me. I'm just saying this like it is. Also, I welcome well-ordered and intelligent arguments. I love a good debate, but don't turn this comment into a shitstorm. Really.
*edit* Wow, so mature, thumb it down and don't try to argue it. Tell me, what's wrong with putting out an intelligent opinion when people supporting this haven't given any good reasons for tagging to be banned?

644512
yeah, didn't know that. I don't understand why it's banned, and I'm going to argue against it, but I'll respect the rules this time.

644531
644568
I actually tried to track them back just yesterday. I spent hours on it, but at some point or another, I would always encounter a dead end. Generally it was someone who deleted the comment that tagged them, but at least once, I tracked it to a user who doesn't appear to exist. :raritydespair:
I may try again sometime though. It was kind of fun. :pinkiecrazy:

644713 I have no strong feelings one way or the other.

644748 You magnificent bastard :rainbowlaugh: Well, you certainly have more patience than I.

What if I tag myself? :pinkiecrazy:

644575
Wouldn't it be the more you don't know?

644713
You present your argument well, but "we just want to have fun!" is a flawed argument in general.

If you ask a griefer why they grief, they'll probably tell you that it's fun. They have a stressful day at work/school/life in general and want to get online and annoy the piss out of people in whatever game they can, because they find that amusing. But griefing makes playing the game as it was meant to be played less fun, and so the staff try to keep in in line.

The same sort of thing applies here. Sure, you can have fun, but if you're distracting people from what the site is actually here for (fanfictions and discussions thereof), then they have every right to report you. This isn't a playground where you can run amok and put on your own little shows, it's a service being provided to the public at no charge. Personally, I like to think that the staff is fairly laid back about what we do here, so long as it doesn't interfere with others. But ultimately, if people feel annoyed enough to complain, then they're going to crack down on you, because in a contest between the actual purpose of this website and the social-networking that seems to have sprung up around it, the actual purpose is going to win every time-- this is Fimfiction, not Fim-learn-about-people-by-asking-questions.

Anyway, that's just my two cents. Honestly, I don't think the tagging was all that bad, but if left unchecked at an exponential growth rate like it had, well, I could see it quickly becoming a problem.

Just as a curious question . . . is tagging a 24-hour ban, or a permaban?

644812
Eh...
Suppose so.

Oh thank god this got dealt with early.

I do not know what tagging a person is, will someone please explain?

644521

Because you want it.

The only time the internet gives us exactly what we want is more cowbell and more ponies.

644468>>645006 Me writing on your user page:

Hey! You've been tagged! Now you have to answer 11 facts about yourself, why you joined fimfiction, what you think poop smells like, and send this to 11 people!!!

That's tagging.

Thank you for picking up on this, I had 6 different people tag me. SIX.

What's the problem with tagging? It's harmless fun that can easily be ignored if people don't like it.

I don't think people come to FIMFiction just for the stories - they could easily go to PFA, FanFic.Net, GDocs, etc for that. But instead, it's the community that draws attention, as the other three sites lack any usable methods to have discussions, chats, etc outside of the stories. Tagging help builds community - you can learn things about other writers/readers that you didn't previously know, perhaps find out that you have someone in common with others, make a new friend, etc.

If I'm tagged, does that mean I'm it? It's like the child's game right?
:rainbowhuh:

645181 How about approaching someone and asking questions instead of making it an annoying game?

The most I know about tagging is that I've never been tagged, thank goodness. I wouldn't do it anyway. The way I see it, if I wanted to know things about another person, I would ask them instead of making chain mail.

645215

Because it's other people asking questions you might not of thought of asking, to people you might not have thought of asking. You just stumble upon some tag post and be like "I didn't know that about them".

I've met a few friends on DA that way.

Yes! Finally!
Fortuna nostri favet!

I can see what they are talking about, sheesh. I looked at recent Tag! post and all of these that answered before them.....it went deeper then 6 or 7 users, talk about going deep. Thanks Knighty, didn't know that this kind of practice can be quite.....spammful .

Thank the grand overlord knighty for delivering us from retardation.

Tagging.

I honestly don't care. Any sensible person would just stare at it, and ignore it. That's why I removed the comment section from my user page. Nobody has a place to put it except on a story, a blog, or through my PM. Truth of the matter is, let people have their fun. If you honestly think it's a bother, ignore it. I understand if everyone continues tagging you like they did to 645128, but let people just enjoy themselves. It's almost Christmas. (At least in Canada, it is.)
