So you’re in love with Rainbow Dash, and Rainbow Dash is in love with you? And neither of you remembers any spells going wrong or drinking anything that tasted funny?
Clever, indeed. Spike's making sure the story is free of the usual plot contrivances.
Then why does this feel so weird? Why do I feel like I’m losing something here?
Because on a subconscious level, you feel Dash is taking the most precious item in your hoard? (Dragon psychology. Headcanon welcome. )
Yeah, I know what you mean. Ponies used to think I’d turn into a girl when winter came around.
There's a story there. Two, actually: one where Spike deals with the rumor and one where it actually happens.
Okay, enough quote reactions. Applejack's stance on homosexuality is actually quite reasonable, practical, and mature. It's not that she finds the idea abominable or intolerable, just logistically unsustainable in her line of work. That works quite well for her character. Well done.
It's kind of ironic, given the chapter title, but this chapter was a bit anticlimactic. Everyone's being very reasonable, which I quite like. No drama for drama's sake, no forcing conflict. Yay.
4006127 It's comments like that that make me glad I took the story in the direction I did. Thanks for the feedback. Next chapter you'll see Rainbow on her evaluation. Hilarity may ensue
With the chapter title being what it is, I expected everyone to find out here. This is really more of a small reveal. Good chapter though. I like how Spike handles it, and this is a reasonable stance for AJ to take. Though I really think she could have put two and two together here. Maybe she'll figure it out later without being told, that could be interesting.
4006276 I needed Spike to know what it's like to have ponies think you are something you're not, and with his shift of macho to metro from time to time, that seemed like the most obvious option. Plus, if you want to look really deep into it, I haven't seen a female dragon on the show yet (not counting S4), so it could be like with dwarves that the general populace thinks there are no females, or in Spike's case that males turn into females from time to time. Remember: there weren't any books on dragons in Dragonquest, so there's nothing to say it's not true.
For the record: in certain reptiles the gender of a hatchling can be affected by the temperature of the egg, and clownfish are sequential hermaphrodites (yes, both Nemo and Marlin would be transgenders. Feel free to throw that in people's face whenever someone brings up accuracy in cartoons, but that as an aside.) It's not entirely impossible, even without magic in the equation. So it'd be a natural, but wrong, assumption.
It's not a canon reference, if that's what you were thinking.
4006249 Yeah, I've been pondering changing that title, especially with how it makes things sound. Changed it to 'Confession', now, which is decidedly more neutral and less of a hype-up. Thanks for pointing that out.
Twilight's conversation with AJ was well-written and humorous. Kept missing the clues by an inch but kept pressing Twilight just the same. I'm not sure if it would have been easier on Twilight if her friend did get it right.
Also, no gaybashing lynchmobs? Hehe, I think it's an overdone storyline to have the Apple family be the ultra conservatives. I mean if Granny smith can hop around wearing bunny ears and Big Mac can make a bet to walk down Stirrup Street wearing said elderly mare's pretty floral bonnet, then I guess the Apple family actually has a good track record with controversy in the show. Seriously, go rewatch that episode and listen right at the beginning. The reason AJ needed to buck all 'em apples is because if the bet she's talking about in the first few seconds.
As for Spike's maturity level, I like to cite bro-code. Spike is the best when it comes to bro code and he can stomach anything even if his mind is too young to yet be sexually active. If Twilight needs him to leave the room and keep quiet about who she's having sex with, he can do it. Just don't ask him to vocalize his thoughts on their intimacy.
I think you handled this one well. And I really want to thank you for not making AJ a prude and a bigot. Goodness knows, too many writers go down that route, and frankly it just doesn't fit her character.
You've hit it on the head by making her opinion ground itself in practicality - that's Applejack all over.
I really don't know what else I can say; there isn't really any constructive criticism I can offer. Well written as always.
You have no idea how happy I am that you didn't make Applejack a huge bigot. I do understand where most folks are coming from when they do make her out like that, considering her supposedly strong conservative upbringing, being a country pony and all; but, it has gotten to the point that if AJ went farther than "Uncomfortable about it, but accepting", it greatly affected my interest in reading the rest of the story.
If we were allowed to thumbs up a story more than once, I'd be more than glad to do so just for this fact alone.
In any case, excellent writing as always. I look forward to reading what else you have in store for this story.
Thanks for the way you handled . I think you hit it just right, in the zone of normalcy, with minimal risk of offending anyone. It's nice to see a fic that presents both sides in a neutral way for once, without extremes and without seriously putting down one side or the other.
Considering the controversial topic, I think you handled that very well. You stayed neutral and gave good opinions to both sides of the argument. Couldn't do better myself.
So Rare and AJ know that RD and Twi are seeing somepony, just don't have the right idea yet who it is they are seeing. I wonder how Pinkie and Shy will find out or how they will make the connections themselves to find out why RD/Twi behave the way they do right now like Rare and AJ did.
It sure will be a surprise to AJ/Rare when Twi and RD come out with the truth though. XD
Dun Dun Duh! Now this is getting interesting, what will Twi do now her friends will need to be told sooner or later. I WANT MOAR SOON! If that is alright with you.
Gotta compliment you on how you handled AJ's views. It's sort of refreshing to see a portrayed character who's against homosexuality, but not in a bigoted way, and with a fairly reasonable argument about the practicality.
This is probably one of the most accurate portrayals of Spike I have ever seen in a fanfic. Hell, this is more accurate to his character than some actual episodes of the show. And I really liked the way you explained Applejack's viewpoint. it's very realistic.
Applejack gave her a confident nod. “Nope. A pony princess can’t marry a commoner, so whichever stallion ya end up with is gonna be a prince. And if he’s good enough for you, he must be prince material.”
I simply cannot belive this line is coming from the country mare. Surely she'd give leeway in her thoughts to fantasize about being with royalty.

And once again Twilight's friends are blissfully oblivious

Please for the love of Celestia, there better not be a ponified version of Westboro Baptist Church in this fanfiction's universe.

I think I'll put it in the epilogue, actually. The ending's written and... yeah, I couldn't quite fit it in naturally.
I am aware of the double entendre in that statement.

That was the most epic look at the whole "Aj is against gays" thing I have ever seen^^ Thank you for showing me this^^

You said earlier you were a furry, and you now said that the cheese grater catalogues are holy to you.
Cheese grater
You are aware of the famous picture, right?

It's a pun. Holy, hole-y... Is it the cheese graters being changelings one? I've seen some of that.
